  • I have a lot of songs in my iTunes library. So many, in fact, that I often forget what songs are even in there. So, occasionally I just set the player to shuffle and enjoy the surprise that comes when some long-lost song resurfaces unexpectedly. As I was playing this game of iTunes roulette the other day, I was delighted to hear my favorite version of one of my favorite hymns, “I Love to Tell the Story.” It’s a duet sung by Emmylou Harris and Robert Duvall from the soundtrack to the 1997 film, The Apostle. The Apostle also happens to be a favorite film of mine for several reasons: It stars Robert Duvall, an actor whose work I love, it is set in South Louisiana, a place I’m deeply connected to, and it has a killer soundtrack filled with roots and southern gospel music … quite a trifecta.

The film explores themes of temptation, vengeance and redemption as it tells the story of Eulis “Sonny” Dewey, played by Duvall, a compli-cated and complex character — a Pentecostal preacher who is equal parts sinner and saint. There’s a scene early in the film where we see Sonny praying late at night in an upstairs room at his mother’s house. Well, praying is a gentle way to put it. We actually find Sonny shouting at God in what amounts to an angry one-way conversa-tion. As he rants and raves, asking for a way to see reason in the hardships that have befallen him, neighbors begin to call the house to complain. His mother answers the phone and delivers this

memorable line: “That’s my son, that is. I’ll tell ya: ever since he was an itty-bitty boy, sometimes he talks to the Lord and sometimes he yells at the Lord. Tonight, he just happens to be yellin’ at him.”

I don’t know how many of us have the audacity to yell at the Lord in our prayers or honestly express our anger, but there is certainly evidence for doing so in the Scriptures, especially in the Psalms (go look at Psalm 44 for proof). The Psalms give voice to the full range of human emotions, from joy to sadness, hope to despair, comfort to pain. But whenever some of the rawer emotions are expressed, they are regularly followed up by a proclamation of continued trust and faith in God.

Psalm 62 is a good example of this balance. In the verses that immediately precede our reading this morning, we find the Psalmist lamenting attacks that have been launched against them. But that lament gives way to the affirmation that we read together this morning that God is our rock, salvation and fortress.

We have had reason to despair over the past year. Our resolve has been tested and our faith may have even been shaken. So may the words of Psalm 62 bring you comfort this morning as together we remember that God alone is our hope and our refuge.

Psalm Reading — Psalm 62:5–8 Jessica Capps

For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from the Lord, Who alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my deliverance and my honor; my mighty rock, my refuge is in the Lord. Trust in God at all times, O people; pour out your heart before the Almighty; God is a refuge for us.

Selah

Gospel Reading — Mark 1:14–20 Michele Stinecipher

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea — for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gracias a Dios.

Reserve your Wilshire Souper Bowl Box!Donations benefit Mission Oak Cliff.

We can’t gather in Communi-ty Hall for lunch on Super Bowl Sunday this year, but we can still make a difference for hunger relief through our adapted Souper Bowl of Caring.

Wilshire is offering a special Souper Bowl Box that will include a Wilshire-branded 13-oz. food thermos plus recipes for some of your favorite soups from the church kitchen. Use the recipes to make your own soup for the big game on Sunday, Feb. 7, and share your photos on social media using the hashtag #WilshireSouperBowl.

Souper Bowl Boxes are available for a minimum donation of $40 and can be picked up at the church on Sunday, Jan. 31, from 2

to 4 p.m. in the porte cochere, or Wednesday, Feb. 3, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 4:30 to 6 p.m. (Koi-nonia Café To Go pickup times). Proceeds will help Mission Oak Cliff buy and operate a box truck that will allow them to expand their food-related services.

In addition, all participants will be entered into a drawing, and three lucky winners will receive a

gift box from the Market at Bonton Farms. To reserve your Souper Bowl Box, make

your donation and choose a pickup time, visit wilshirebc.org/registration. If you need assistance with the process or would prefer to pay by check, contact Abbey Adcox at 214-452-3127 or [email protected].

Mission Oak Cliff commits to breaking the cycle of poverty in the Oak Cliff community. As an expression of Christ’s love, it improves food security, encourages meaningful relationships and teaches life skills. What began in 1948 as a food pantry at Cliff Temple Baptist Church is now a full-service community ministry with a food pantry, clothing closet and a large adult English as a Second Language program coupled with a cutting-edge bilingual preschool operated in cooperation with DISD.

Moving into 2021, our church and com-munity stand hopeful in the fight against COVID-19 thanks to the beginning stages of the vaccination process. As vaccines are adminis-tered to front line workers and vulnerable popu-lations, we are eager to see an expanded, tiered roll-out in Dallas County in the coming months. This development brings us closer to the SEE principle we’ve focused on since the creation of the Task Force — providing a Safe Experience for Every Body.

This progress comes at a crucial time given the exponential rise in COVID-19 numbers taxing our local hospitals and overwhelming our healthcare community. As responsible commu-nity members, we remain steadfast in ensur-ing we do our part as a congregation to limit exposure opportunities to aid in the health and safety of our members and neighbors.

What we learned in recent months is that we can build on the successful, safe gatherings we began exploring during the latter part of 2020. From the Church in the Lot evening services and Christmas Eve drive-in service, to con-trolled activities that allowed us to welcome 10 people or less via the Honest Advent timed ac-tivities, we found ways to meaningfully engage in person. We move into the beginning of 2021 with anticipation for building and expanding on these kinds of activities to find additional ways to stay connected as a community of faith — while staying safe.

We are excited to note that the task force is exploring ways to incrementally add activities

with more people as it deemed safe to do so. Our diligent sub-group committee members are evaluating a risk-level model based on exposure rate and group size analysis based off a colle-giate model.

We are positively preparing the path for when we can re-gather. Staying connected remains a priority focus. Thank you for continuing to stay connected online as we continue to seek innova-tive opportunities to join in person.

  • Faith in 3D — Wilshire’s annual evening of drama, dialogue and dessert — is the latest church tradition to be creatively adapted for the pandemic.

This year’s show, a readers theatre presentation of scenes from Anthony Clarvoe’s The Living, is being rehearsed and recorded entirely over Zoom with actors and other participants in their own homes. It will be shown on Wilshire’s YouTube channel at 7:30 p.m. on three consecutive nights: Thursday, Feb. 4, Friday, Feb. 5, and Saturday, Feb. 6.

The Living, a thoughtful, sometimes humorous commentary on the management of the London plague of 1665, was written in 1991. And yet even now — especially now

    — it presents the opportunity for a discus-sion of our current response to a pandemic.

    Following the dramatic presentation,

Senior Pastor George Mason will reflect on how the issues raised by the playwright can be applied to the concerns we must confront as we make our way in a post-COVID-19 world.

Pray for Wilshire health care workers

Rapid-response teams availableHealth Response Team is comprised of medical professionals in the church who are willing to make themselves available for general counsel and encouragement. These volunteers are not dis-pensing medical care but are available for general questions and guidance, especially when it may be harder to get to a doctor. Lead contact is Linda Garner, [email protected] or 214-452-3151. Food and Supplies Response Team is comprised of volunteers from our Missions and Ad-vocacy committees who are at the ready to help those who are isolated and need food or other supplies brought to them. We have identified existing designated and budget funds that will be used to meet urgent needs of members, such as food and medicine and limited rent assistance. Lead contact is Heather Mustain, [email protected] or 214-452-3110. Spiritual Support Response Team is comprised of trained lay leaders and staff who are available to talk with members who are lonely, scared or just need to talk during this time of isolation. This is not a substitute for professional counseling. Volunteers will call care receiv-ers on at least a weekly basis to listen to them and offer emotional support. Other referrals for additional identified needs will be made to the appropriate teams or staff. Lead contact is Gail Brookshire, [email protected].

  • Pray for Wilshire educators

As schools and school districts grapple with the complexities of having school during covid-19, we have compiled a list of Wilshire members who work in education. Keep them in your prayers and consider offering encouragement in the form of a note, email or phone call. We apologize for any omissions; please let us know of names that should be added to the list.
