HappyWinter.Finallyitcame.WhenIwasakid“They”alwaysusedtosayinKansasthatyouneededagoodcoldsnapinorderforalltheflubugstodieforthecomingyear.ForyearsIpictureditinmymindlikeaswarmofgnats.Mayitbeso.Ourofficesandschoolareclosedtwodaysthisweekontopofaholiday;Ihopeyougotsomerestoutofallthis,too.Therewasoneparentwhosentoutanemailfortheschool:“Ihopeeveryoneisenjoyingthesnowandthekidsathome.IknowIam.IfonlyIcouldbeoffwork!...”Amen.‘Causewhenthestaffisoff,guesswhodoesthebulletin!I’mjustfocus-ingonallthefluwearebeatingcomeApril.

Youshouldbereceivingyourstatementsfor2013givingthisweekinthemail.AsIlookthroughthemandsigneachoneIamfilledwithgratitudeforsomanyofyouwhoreallydosupportthelifeoftheparishinasignifi-cantway.Thepercentagesaresmall—youcanseetheanalysisonpage9ofthebulletintoday—themajorityofsupportineverygroup,churchorassociationintheworldisalwaysthroughthegenerosityoftheminor-ity,whattheycallthe80/20rule.Wearenotreallytheexception.Although46%ofourfamilies(2,231)haveusedenvelopesatleastonceduringthepastyear,thosewhogive$20ormoreeachweektothefirstcollection (20%oftheparish,or997families)represent88%ofourtotaldonations.

I’mgoingtostudytheseresultsinmoredepthwithmoretime,butafewquickobservationsareinteresting.Thelevelofgivinginanotherwise,relativelyconsistentpatternofgiving,indicatesthatHolyDaysofObligationarelargelyoverlooked.OneofthethingsI’vebeenwantingtotalkaboutistheimportanceoftheseHolyDays.Notforthe collection, either —theyaredaysthatareprecioustoourlifeoffaithandrequireofusaparticularlevelofattention.Allofthemare,onadeeplevel,intimiatelytiedtoouridentityandresponsibilityasChristiansanddaysofparticularthanksduetoGod.They

arelikethebirthdaypartyoranniversaryofaclosefamilymemberthatyouwouldnotdaremiss.Somethinglikethatannualfamilyeventthatyoumightevengotogreatlengthswithtravelandexpensetoattend.Inapost-Christianeralikeoursitishardformanypeopletobelievethatsomethinglikeoneday(24hours)mightbeholier than another. Also, thechangesaboutwhichyearstheycountasdaysofobligationandwhichyearstheydon’thavepeopleconfused,Ithink.Moreaboutthatlater.

Atanyrate,Iamsoverygratefulforyourcontributions.Wehavealottodohere,alotofworkyettodevelopandadebttopayoff,andIthankyouforkeepingitgoing.Pleasecontinuetohelptheparishaswemoveforwardinour mission of grow-together in holinessand witness to theloveofGodinourworld, where it so badlyneedstobeknown.Theseareuncertain times for somany—whichmakesyourgiftsmoremeaning-ful,aswellasmorenecessaryaswereachouttoasmanypeopleaswecanincharityandcompassion.

Finally,let’srememberallourSisters,ourteachersandfaculty,ourschoolchildrenandtheirparentsandfamiliesthisweekaswecelebratethewonderfulpresenceofCatholicEducationinourparishthisweek.CatholicSchoolsWeekisatimetoreflectonthebless-ing of Catholic formation and what is for the Church,Ibelieve,oneofthemostimportant(ifnotthemostimportant)apostolategivenusbyGod:toformandeducate,nurtureandprotecttheseyoungpeopleandhelpthemfindtheirplaceinGod’screation.MaytheygoforthfromusandbringaboutGod’snewcreationinpeaceandjustice,andgoodnessand truth.

holy cross academyWe Were Off to See the WizardHolyCrossAcademythespiansfollowedtheyellowbrickroadandperformedtheWizardofOz!UnderthedirectionofMrs.CathieCarmical,auditionsbeganinlateSeptember.PerformerspracticedanddedicatedcountlesshoursfortheopeningafternoonperformanceforHCAstudents,facultyandstaff.Thefinalcurtaineveningperfor-manceawedparentsandguestsasDorothyandherfriendssearchedforthewonderfulWizard.

Mrs.Carmicalwasassistedbymanyvolunteerswhoworkedonsets,costumes,musicandsound.Approximately90studentswereinvolvedinthisproductionwhichwouldnothavebeenpossiblewithoutdedicationandaccountabilitybyallinvolved.CongratulationstoourDramaClubfortheircaptivatingperformance.

Don, Guest Speaker at Parent Gathering Speaker Series AtourfirstgatheringforthisyearonJanuary14thFr.DonRooneygaveaninspiringpresenta-tiontoamotivatedgroupofparentsonVaticanIIandourparishtheme:“LiturgyisLifeisMis-sion.”Father’spresentationgaveaveryeye-openingviewonwhyVaticanIIwasanecessarycouncil,whysomanyintheChurchstrugglewithitsimplementationandwhyitissoimpor-tantforustoknowaboutittoday.Evenafter50yearsofitswritingandimplementationitisstilllargelyunknown.“Fewhavereadit,butevery-onehasanopinionaboutit,”hesaid.
