Well, let’s face it….not all car repair shops are even close to being equal. For

example, let’s take a look at another industry that we all can relate to. The con-

struction or home repair industry. This is something I've learned a long time ago

while I was rebuilding an old house and I’ve found this to be true. At the low end

there are apartment or rental property grade of craftsmanship, next is the commer-

cial grade - decent home repair. This includes commercial projects like banks,

stores, etc. Next is the Buckhead grade, let me explain this term. On the north

side of Atlanta is an area called Buckhead, a very nice area indeed. Many high

wage earners live there. Doctors, Lawyers and Judges just to name a few profes-

sions. Many of these "castles" (homes) are 1 million dollars or more. Whoever

builds or maintains these homes must be the best. Think about it for a minute…do

you really think you can do a poor or sloppy job on a lawyer/judges castle and get

away with explaining that the reason that the wall is not straight is because of "bad

wood?" Can you spell law suit? These home owners expected better and they are

willing to pay for it.

Let me help you with an automotive secret….the same principle applies. There

are “shade tree” mechanics who patch it up and let it go. This level of car repair

will actually cost you more in the long run. Additionally there are franchise shops

and many individually owned car repair shops. Many franchise shops only do

repairs or maintenance in a very narrow field such as "just brakes," or "oil

changes," or "tires and alignment" you get the idea. Many independent shops try

to cover the range and complexity of today's vehicles the best they can.

Sometimes referring the customer to the specific dealer is the only option.

Somewhere in all of this is the "premier" shop. These shops constantly to try to

improve themselves and to offer their customers the latest/ greatest in car repair.

What separates a top shop from well…one that isn't. The list is long but let me be

brief. 1) Continual Training (keeping up with the latest technology) 2) Establishing

great relationships with customers and vendors. 3) Adequate insurance on cus-

tomers’ vehicles. 4) Having ethics. 5) Warranties on all repairs.

For instance at my shop I offer a 6 month/ 6,000 mile written warranty.

Shops in the big city - Atlanta or Tallahassee must offer some kind of warranty.

Those customers demand it and those shops that don't are out of business quick-

ly or are the typical “shade tree shop” that ends up working on worn out vehicles

with customers that only want to "patch it up."

Do you think that because I offer a 6 month/ 6k mile warranty that everything is

blue skies and butterflies? We recently performed a large timing belt and water

pump replacement on a customer’s Lexus. Well everything seemed fine until the

check engine light came on several days later. A small piece of wiring had rubbed

through on the serpentine drive belt causing the amber check engine light to come

on. After repairing the wiring and test driving the vehicle over several days we

called the customer to pick up his vehicle. He couldn't believe there was "no

charge" for this. He also stated that he was so used to paying every time he took

his vehicle in for repair in Grady County even for redo work.

When something comes with a warranty don’t you expect that item or repair to last

beyond the stated warranty? Hot water tank, 5 years. Expect 7 or more. Car

Battery 18-24 month free replacement warranty. Expect 4-5 years of overall use.

So what are you receiving after spending a lot of money on repairs? For example

do you see this on your vehicle’s invoice? My customers do!

“Warranty on parts and labor is 6 months or 6,000 miles whichever first occurs

unless otherwise specified. Warranty work has to be performed in our shop and

cannot exceed the original cost of repair.” Moving forward….
