In today’s familiar Gospel passage, the Beatitudes, Jesus lays down the conditions for discipleship (Mtt. 5: 1-12). The Beatitudes are not just a blueprint for happiness already achieved, but the job description for those who hope to form a new human community envisioned by Jesus’ ministry and message of renouncing claims to status and power; these are the primary values for a disciple of Jesus Christ. Some of these values put us at odds with what our political parties claim are “traditional American values,” and there for us lies the struggle. In a world staggered by global hunger, human migration, dwindling natural resources, fundamen-talist terrorism, racial tension, it seems a bit silly to haggle over whose church, or political party, God loves best. In fact Christians of every denomination have begun to recognize that conversion (a change of heart) is common responsibility of all who claim faith in Jesus Christ. Over the past 50 years or so, many Catholics and Protestants have begun to sense that what unites us is deeper than what divides us; we share one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism which unites us; sadly it the Lord’s Supper, the Mass, that has been a source of division among us. But that too is changing thanks to ecumenical dialogues taking place among the churches. I remember a sermon by Cardinal DiNardo gave on the Beatitudes where he said: “If one is look-ing at the Beatitudes for any kind of practical advice that will make you ultimately successful in the world by believing in Jesus, then they are the eight worse pieces of advice ever given!” Do we seek to live the values of God by working to bring about a human community where people care for one another, or do we strive to live the values promoted by our society that pits one person against another in an everyone for themselves philosophy? These are some of the real and troubling questions raised by the Beatitudes; being peace-makers, hungering for justice, being merciful towards others as God is toward us. Our identity as Christians and as Catholics depends on how we choose to answer them.

Fr. Bill

Padre Bill

Scripture through the Eyes of Women

This past century has opened our minds and hearts to the richness of women’s contributions. As we work together, men and women, we realize we have lots to learn and contribute to each other. Scripture in our churches has been dominated by men. Most if, not all our Sunday ser-mons, are given by men. How much are we missing without the women’s perspective? Come join in this presentation and discussion series to see what greater richness you can find to enrich your faith life by reading scripture through the eyes of Women.

The following themes will be covered: Jan. 26:

The Woman Who Loves Lavishly (in Mark, Luck,

Matthew and John)

All Saints Catholic Church Choir

10:30 Mass Choir: Come join the adult choir as we worship and enhance the liturgy! The choir is made up of volunteers over the age of 16, who are dedicated, committed to serving, and are fun-loving. All levels of singing are welcome from beginner to ad-vance. It is not necessary to be able to read music. We can teach you!! Practices are held Thursday nights from 7 PM to 9 PM in Room 1 of the St. Vincent de Paul Building and before mass as well at 9:45 AM. The choir sings every Sunday from mid-August to June at 10:30 AM Sunday mass. We sometimes sing at the 8:30 AM Mass and 5:30 PM mass on Saturday. We also sing on Christmas Eve, Holy Week, Confirmation and other special events throughout the year. We also have a combined choir concert with the Spanish Choir at the end of May or the first weekend of June which is a lot of fun and it gives the parishioners a chance to see and hear the choir in a different way.

Do you play an instrument?

If you play an instrument of any type and would like to share you talents, please join the music ministry. We are always look-ing to add to the liturgy and events. If you are interested in joining or would like to find out more information, you can send an email to the address listed below, call the Parish office, stop by after mass or come to a practice and check it out.
