January 29, 2017 This week, January 29 - February 3 is Catholic Schools Week in our Diocese and throughout our country. The importance of Catholic education cannot be overstated. In the early history of our nation Catholic priests and men and women religious were already teaching young people and adults. Since the nation was mostly Protestant in the 19th century, there was anti-Catholic sentiment related to heavy immigration from Catholic Ireland after the 1840s, and a feeling that Catholic children should be educated in public schools to become American. In the 1880s most states passed a constitutional amendment, called Blaine Amendments, forbidding tax money be used to fund parochial schools. By 1890 the Irish had built an extensive network of parishes and parish schools ("parochial schools") across the urban Northeast and Midwest. The Irish and other Catholic ethnic groups looked to parochial schools not only to protect their religion, but to enhance their culture and language. The main impetus was fear that exposure to Protestant teachers in the public schools, and Protestant fellow students, would lead to a loss of faith. The reaction was strong opposition to any public funding of parochial schools. The Catholics nevertheless built their elementary schools, parish by parish, using religious sisters as teachers. On December 15, 1791, the Bill of Rights was ratified. It is significant to parish schools because of its first Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.." This amendment was the result of long years of efforts by religious groups to obtain religious liberty. This week will see a great deal of activities and programs promoting Catholic schools. Some of our Saint Andrew school students will share what Catholic education means to them, at weekend Masses. Whether or not you have children or grandchildren in St. Andrews, please remember the schools in your prayers. Feel free to stop in and visit as well. As pastor of both Annunciation and St. Andrews I am very proud of our students, the teachers and staff, and all who support Catholic education in our great country. Jesus said it best “Let the children come to Me.” Fr.Tony Building Fund -- Monthly Mustard Seed Monthly January 29 February 5 ZEP 2:3,3:12-13 ISA 58:7-10 1 COR 1:26-31 1 COR 2:1-5 MATT 5:1-12a MATT 5:13-16

LENT ALERT -- Ash Wednesday is March 1 this year.

We are planning and organizing Faith-

sharing groups in preparation for Easter. This means signing up for a group to meet every week during Lent. This year we will be using "Resisting Happiness" book by Matthew Kelly (available in the church

entrance). If you would like to join a group, please

contact Sister Mary Ruth, whose group meets on Tuesday mornings. Other leaders are Dale and Sandy Deraps on Monday evenings and Ruthie Adams on Tuesday evenings.

Project Share, the resale clothing store

which benefits less fortunate people in our county, is in need of people willing to volunteer once a month. California staffs the store on Thursdays and Saturdays. Shifts are about three hours long. Volunteering at Project Share is a rewarding way to “feed the hungry” or “clothe the naked”. Proceeds from Project Share help to fund the Food Pantry. Please contact

Ruth Ann Jobe ([email protected]) or 573-239-6625 for more information or to sign up for a shift once a month.

You will notice that we have a Votive Candle Stand and candles in the back of church. Prices are large - $3; small $1. Put money in collection plate until a money container has been purchased. Thank you.
