“DIGESTI NG” THE GOSPEL . . .
Some 65 years ago, the American film director and producer Cecil B. DeMille directed a movie called The Ten Commandments. It shows the history of the Israelites and God’s giving them commandments through Moses. After winning several Oscars and being well received by critics, the director was asked: “Which of the commandments – according to you – is most often broken by people today?” The famous filmmaker replied: “The First one: You shall have no other gods before me.” The director went on to explain that it was this commandment that was first broken by the Israelites and the same commandment is most often broken by modern people. DeMille added that today we do not bow to idols made of metal, carved in wood, or sculpted in stone. Today people bow to idols in the form of money, fame, power at all costs, the pursuit of pleasure, the cult of the sexuality of the human body. These are modern gods. Serving false idols is a kind of possession of an evil spirit. And that it is really happening around us! This is not only showed in the films, such as The Exorcist, or the books focused on this issue. This is reality. And reality is something we must face, not deny. For centuries we have been doomed to the attacks of evil spirits. The choice between one kingdom and another, between Satan and God, between good and evil. As children of the first Adam, we bear the stigma of evil and sin in our nature, contrary to the mission of the second Adam – Christ, who brings us God’s kingdom, happiness, and salvation. St. Paul expresses this conflict in words: “I do not do the good I want, but I do the evil I do not want” (Romans 7:19). The man with the evil spirit portrayed in today’s Gospel could not free himself from being possessed. Only the Lord Jesus released him. By driving the unclean spirit out of the possessed man, Christ confirms his divinity. It shows that, as God, he has power not only over the material world but also over the world of evil spirits, a world that frequently disturbs, distracts, tempts, and leads us astray, leads us nowhere. The great mistake that many people make today is not only to ignore (or deny) the existence of Satan and his evil spirits but also to naively think that if they do exist, they must concern others, never ourselves. Of course, it is a lie. Each of us is somehow in danger of being possessed by an evil spirit. And we are in real danger when we stop being watchful, alert. Satan is like New York City – never sleeps. Of course, we may not be possessed by an evil spirit to the same degree as that unfortunate man in the Gospel, but in each of us, there is some part of the evil spirit that we should throw out of our hearts with the help of Christ. And we should do it as soon as possible. So let us reflect on whether we are serving and bowing down to any false idol(s) in our lives. Perhaps that part of the evil spirit in us that prevents us from being truly God’s people is our inner pride. Perhaps it is a spirit of jealousy that destroys our relationship with Christ, making us sad toys in the clutches of evil, unable to rejoice while seeing others happy and successful. Someone called jealousy or envy “the stupidest of sins” because it is the envious person who is the first victim of this sin. He cannot sleep, has regrets, high blood pressure, and a bad mood. At the same time, the man we envy flourishes and sleeps soundly. By tempting us to pride or envy, Satan keeps us on a leash, plays with us, and mockingly laughs at our foolishness. It is similar with the sin of greed and our love of money, with the pursuit of power, fame, and popularity at all costs. For some of us, the evil spirit tries to get us away from God by sending thousands of distractions while praying. Then we get discouraged, for we cannot pray as we want, and we think that our prayer brings no meaning at all. We give up, and Satan wins one more time over us. Another idol that we often bow to and serve is laziness and the cult of pleasure. From here, there is only a small step to addictions that destroy us physically.
A Few Words From Fr. Sylwester
5
The idol or god that obscures what is good in us and separates us from God can be such mundane matters as neglect of spiritual and family life due to addiction to television, constant surfing on the Internet, spending hours “talking” to people on Facebook while ignoring those in our homes, visiting malls (our modern temples) and buying unnecessary things to feel better. Let us remember that just as Jesus helped the possessed man from today’s Gospel, he is also ready to help us constantly, anytime we need help. Maybe we try to be self-sufficient and count on our muscles only, but sometimes the power we confront is much stronger than us. In situations like these, let’s ask Jesus to come help us with his divine power. It is enough to have a strong faith in Christ’s divine power and be exposed to the rays of his grace.
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEE K BE GINS
This Sunday, January 31, we start the National Catholic Schools Week, which is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It runs all week, up to February 6. Schools usually observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses, and other activities for students, families, parishioners, and community members. Our Saint Anthony School is happy to join other Catholic schools across the country. Throughout the whole week, there will be scheduled various activities and events to provide opportunities for celebration and engagement with students, teachers, and families. St. Anthony School is participating in “Christ Is Alive! National Essay Contest.” We held a school competition in grades 5th through 8 to select the essays that will be sent to the National Contest (one essay per grade.) Students were to describe a moment when they felt close to God. Ashley Roughgarden won the 8th-grade contest, and I am pleased to announce that her essay is attached to this bulletin. Congratulations, Ashley! Bravo! However, all the NCSW celebrations start with the Eucharist, the heart of our Catholic Faith. Our SAS students will assist at the 10:00 AM Mass, and at the end of each Mass this weekend, some parents of our students will share a few words with us to get us a better idea of what SAS is all about and why it is worth considering it for your children and grandchildren. For over a century, SAS has provided children with a superior education rooted in the Catholic faith, and SAS is here to stay! This is a school-related topic so forgive me, but there must also be homework for each of us: please say a prayer for our Saint Anthony School and for Catholic education in our country!
“BUY ME PIZZA & MY HE ART IS YOURS!”
No, no, don’t buy ME a pizza but buy it yourself, and by doing so, you support St. Anthony School. It’s only $10, and Francesca’s of Glen Rock offers 40% back to SAS. You can order your pizza by February 7th by placing your order online. Just click the link: https://form.123formbuilder.com/5777604/valentine-s-day-pizza-kit-sale. That easy! Flyer on next page.

Silence With God
By Ashley Roughgarden
In this world, it is easy to feel alone or lost. It may feel like there is no one there for you. However, there is
always someone watching over you. No matter how alone you may feel, someone is always supporting you.
That someone is God. He is a friend and guide to all.
When I was younger, I really wanted to see God to know that he was there. My young, immature mind did
not understand how some things do not need to be seen in order to be present in your life. That did not alter
my faith, though. I prayed before every test, every night I went to sleep, every day at school, and more.
However, as I grew up, my schedule got busier, and I found I had no time to pray.
That is when my school held its first Adoration. I was a bit skeptical at first. What 10-year-old kid wants to
sit in silence for an hour? Still, I sat down and prayed. After a small amount of time, I had this gut feeling.
It startled me at first, but I knew not to worry. Then I started talking to God more than I ever had before.
It felt like a friend talking to you, casual and natural. Not forced or awkward at all. And at that moment,
for the first time, I had felt God.
It is so easy to reach out to God. Everywhere you look, there is God. He is in the flowers, because of
the beauty He has created. He is in our friends because God wants us to know that we are never alone.
He is in the time because God is there for us every second. He is always loving and forgiving towards
everyone. No matter what.
