On Dec. 30 at 3:38 p.m. Austin Police Department officers respond- ed to a bank robbery at the Bank of America, located at 11500 RM 2222 Road. “A suspect is in custody, Charles Stuart Gilfillan, 54,” said Veneza Agu- inaga, Senior APD Police Officer. A preliminary investigation shows that a white male entered the bank demanding cash. e suspect leſt the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of money. In 2011, there were 26 bank rob- beries in the City of Austin, which is down 10 from 2010 when there were 36, there were 19 in 2009 and 24 in 2008. Nationwide bank robberies are still fairly common, although even- tually many bank robbers are found and arrested, sources say. A report by the Federal Bureau of Investigation states that, among Category I serious crimes, the arrest rate for bank rob- bery a decade ago was second only to that of murder. Banks have sophisticated protec- tions in place like motion-sensing and high resolution color security cameras, time-locked heavy vault doors, silent alarms, exploding dye packs, bait money and locator de- vices. Even the most impregnable vault or safe needs to be able to be opened by someone. It used to be that rob- bers would kidnap the bank manager in many cases, but that does not work as it used to as banks have oſten re- moved the manager’s ability to open the vault. Sources say bank another deterrent to robbing banks is that prosecution is severe. Accounts are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corpora- tion, bringing bank robbery under federal jurisdiction and involving the FBI. Anyone with additional informa- tion about the Four Points Bank of America robbery is asked to call Four Points Park adds a dentist, Dr. Vincent Morales, DDS, to its offices. Located at 6911 N. RM 620 behind Walgreens and Wells Fargo, Four Points Park is already home to Anytime Fitness, Pilates & Yoga at Four Points and Basic Couture. “We have just executed a lease with Dr. Vincent Morales, DDS for space C-100,” said Dana Odom, agent with Schneider & Associates Inc. “We are 53 percent full and could use more tenants,” Odom said. By LYNETTE HAALAND [email protected] Last year home sales in Four Points increased and so did the average sales price, creating a strong local real estate market. "Homes sold for 7.4 percent more in 2011 than 2010, days on the market have stayed about the same with only a 2.4 percent in- crease, and the number of homes sold increased by 12 percent," said Rhonda Durrill, Avalar Austin Real Estate Agent, Steiner Ranch Office. e average home in 2011 sold for $145.30 per square foot as opposed to $136.49 per square foot just one year earlier in the River North Multiple List- ing Service area, which includes most of the Four Points subdivi- sions. Durrill said the health of the housing market is not deter- mined nationally or even city wide but rather by breaking it down to supply and demand in the different subdivisions and ar- eas. A couple of the major subdi- visions in Four Points did well in 2011. e average home in Steiner Ranch was on the mar- ket for 8 days less than last year, while increasing the average sold price per square foot from $125 to $128. In River Place, homes stayed on the market 6 days lon- ger, but the price per square foot increased from $134 to $153. Square footage will range from about 925 square feet to a maximum of 1,300 square feet. e developers expect to at- tract a combination of young couples, old couples, retirees, singles and young families to live in the apartments. Considering the report, Sopher does not expect a big impact on the nearby schools but if there is an issue with more students than expected, the district looks at options including portable buildings to handle the influx. Sopher also says the stu- dent body on each campus varies year to year depending on various factors. For exam- ple, right now LISD schools have a “bubble of students in 2nd and 3rd grades” and fewer kindergardeners than in years past. Future demographer reports will show if LISD will be able to absorb the potential for ad- ditional multi family projects in Steiner with its existing schools. As Concordia University Tex-as prepares to graduate its first class of nurses this spring, it is also ushering in a new Interac-tive Technology Lab. The lab was funded through a grant from St. David’s Founda-tion, a joint owner of St. David’s HealthCare, whose mission is to improve health and health care for all Central Texans by invest-ing proceeds from their hospitals to fund community healthcare initiatives.

Concordia, with its main cam-pus based in Four Points, re-ceived this grant to improve tele-communication opportunities for students. The lab is currently being use by its fast-growing nursing program. After two decades in the soft-ware industry, Four Points resi-dent Wayne Stribling started his own Internet marketing compa-ny. The 5th generation Texan and Steiner Ranch father of two re-cently launched SalesPower Me-dia. “We help small and mid-sized businesses grow their sales by leveraging effective and afford-able marketing solutions with guaranteed results. That’s almost unheard of in our industry,” said Stribling, CEO. Stribling beginning as a soft-ware developer and consultant before progressing into executive management roles for a variety of software start-up companies. While he was Vice President of Client Services for Austin-based Bazaarvoice, he helped design and implement effective market-ing strategies for major brands like Dell, Wal Mart, Best Buy, Hewlett Packard, Home Depot and Nike. Based in Lakeway, Stribling founded SalesPower Media with Dean Thompson in July 2011. To-day the company has five employ-

ees and they use Search Engine Optimization (SEO), professional video production, website design, social media marketing and In-ternet advertising. One strategy that has worked for them is to get client’s websites ranked on the 1st page of search-es. Stribling has a marketing de-gree from Trinity University and is originally from San Antonio. He and his wife Marti have two children, Gracie and Ashton.

To ensure that we are educat-ing the whole child, each month Leander ISD focuses on four of the Search Institute’s 40 Devel-opmental Assets, positive expe-riences and qualities that help students thrive and make posi-tive choices. The developmental assets fall under eight broader categories that include support, empowerment, boundaries and expectations, constructive use of time, commitment to learning, positive values, social compe-tencies and positive identity. Re-search has shown that the more assets a student has, the more likely it is that he or she will grow into a healthy, caring and responsible adult. In our district, we provide learning environments where children are encouraged to be successful academically, physi-cally, socially and emotionally. As such, the 40 Developmental Assets dovetail with the char-acteristics identified in the dis-

trict’s 10 Ethical Principles, and together, serve as beneficial building blocks for life. Because they tie into many other quali-ties we value in LISD, through-out the year, classrooms focus on how these assets can help stu-dents stay on pathways to suc-cess. As it happens, numerous op-portunities for students to apply the developmental assets to the district’s college- and career-readiness initiatives are on the horizon. For example, in just a few weeks, high school students will have the opportunity to ex-press achievement motivation and register for Advanced Place-ment Exams. Students are en-couraged to take exams for each AP class they are taking this school year. Scoring well on AP exams can earn students college credit. Exam registration will begin January 30. Similarly, if secondary students have not yet taken, or wish to retake, the SAT

or the ACT, they may register for upcoming testing days available during the spring semester. Scholarship opportunities encourage several developmen-tal assets, in-cluding school e ng age me nt . Among them, the Leander Council of PTAs and Tex-as PTA recently a n n o u n c e d that they are offering scholar-ships for high school seniors. Students may demonstrate the asset of commitment to learning and submit their application for these scholarships prior to their deadlines. LISD seniors interest-ed in applying for scholarships should fill out the applications available in the high school’s counseling office. LISD will again offer its after-school enrichment programs for elementary-age students this se-

mester. These fun and innovative learning experiences allow stu-dents to be involved in numer-ous developmental assets, in-cluding creative activities, youth

programs and interpersonal c o m p e t e n c e . For a complete list of the after-school enrich-ment classes offered this spring, please

go to the LISD website and select after-school enrichment from the QuickLinks. Other invaluable develop-mental assets are support at home and positive family com-munication. LISD periodically offers parenting classes for par-ents interested in learning new strategies. One such class is the very popular Parenting with Love and Logic, a seven-week course offered by Mary Ann Kluga, LISD chemical abuse pre-

vention coordinator. This course is designed to help parents nur-ture responsible children by let-ting empathy and consequences do the teaching. The winter Par-enting with Love and Logic ses-sion begins on January 12. Space fills up fast, so if you are inter-ested in learning more, go to the LISD website, select the Parents/Students tab and click on the Love and Logic Class link. Perhaps most importantly, this month LISD is reminding students of the importance of regular and punctual attendance, in line with the developmental asset of bonding to school. Stu-dent attendance is the top factor in determining the likelihood that a student will graduate. In fact, the LISD Dropout Preven-tion Task Force found that stu-dents who miss 10 or more un-excused days are 15.5 times more likely to drop out of high school before graduation. For every day of school missed, it takes at least

two days for a student to catch up. Parents can help by schedul-ing appointments before or af-ter school hours. (Of course, it’s important to remember that if a student is sick, he or she should stay home. This helps them get well and keeps staff members and other students from getting sick.) Parents are also strongly encouraged to take vacations and family trips only during school holidays. These are just a few of the ways LISD students can explore the 40 Developmental Assets in 2012. Learn more about the 40 Devel-opmental Assets by visiting the Search Institute website at www.search-institute.org. I encour-age you to discover how you can join LISD and support these as-sets at home by going to www.leanderisd.org, selecting the Par-ent/Students tab and clicking on the Drug-Free Schools/Students link. Have a great week!

Dear Neighbor,I would like to invite you to visit my studio off of 620 in Hudson Bend. I have been a salon owner for many years and now work by myself in a quiet, private studio, overlooking the lake. Having been in the beauty industry for over 28 years working in 5-star salons and spas, I know the high prices that come with upkeep for women and men. I have built a reputation through repeated quality and consistency with my clients. I offer the same products, service, and results at a fraction of the price.

To our Students, Neighbors and friends in Steiner Ranch,

Lake Travis Fire Rescue Station 605 opened its doors in Steiner Ranch in 2005 and we have been blessed to be surrounded by such wonderful neighbors ever since. Not a day goes by that we don't feel the thanks and support of those we serve and protect. When the Steiner Ranch fire began in September 2011 we were all suddenly put to the test. Even as the fire was still burning out of control we received the full sup-port of the community as you quickly and safely obeyed the evacuation orders and trusted us to do our best to save your homes, pets andpossessions. Regretfully, we were not able to save every house but thank-fully, you were all safe and the fire, eventually, was put out. Your support continued throughout the extended effort to extinguish the remaining hot spots and our stations were liter-ally flooded with cards, pictures, donations and delicious food. Even still we are greeted daily with thanksgiving and support. I would like to take this time to let our friends and neighbors know that we appreciate all of you just as much as you appreciate us and to let all of you know that we have read and shared every card, letter

and picture. While we would love to write back to you individually, there were simply too many for us to take care of! Please accept these thanks on behalf of all of us, to all of you. Your letters were filled with wonderful and important words like "brave" and "valorous", and while it is true, the responders that day were brave and valorous and worked tirelessly to save these homes, we were not the only ones. You may not have been actively putting out the fire, but you were certainly part of the effort and without you we could not have been as successful as we were. Therefore, I would like to use some wonderful and important words of my own to describe you: words like "resolve" and "commu-nity". Resolve in your commitment to return to your homes and lives and in your spirit of thanksgiving,

encouragement and assistance. Community in the greatest sense of the word - coming to-gether in support of one another, celebrating and mourning togeth-er, and certainly growing stronger together even in the face of such a crisis as this. It is very much our pleasure to be a part of and serve such a great community and thank you again for all of your support.

Your Neighbors,Lake Travis Fire Rescue

Ben Breedlove cheated death three times but not four and his message of peace is resonating worldwide. The 18-year old West-lake High School senior died on Christmas Day from a congenital heart condition. Ben made flashcard videos be-fore his death that have stirred emotions everywhere. His videos have been translated into multiple languages. His story has made na-tional and international headlines and was featured on NBC Nightly News. Ben had his own channel on YouTube on which he covered everything from relation-ship advice to tips for the SATs. In the last video he posted, one week be-fore he died, Ben, with his infectious smile, held up small, white note cards telling the story of his struggles with the disease that took his life: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a thickening of the heart muscle that makes it work harder. He was honest about being scared about this disease and about being disappointed about not getting to play sports like other kids. But he kept smiling and focusing on God. Ben described how happy and peaceful he felt when he nearly died three times before, from age 4 until most recently. On Dec. 6, he

went into cardiac arrest at WHS. He had a vision while he was being revived and he saw himself with his favorite rapper, Kid Cudi, and looked at himself in a mirror feel-ing proud of his entire life. He writes of a peace he did not want to leave. He ends with the question, “Do you believe in Angels or God?” “I do,” his last note card answers. Ben’s funeral service was held on Thursday at Gateway

Church. His 19 year old sister, Ally, called it a day of celebration through her smile and tears. She wore earrings Ben gave to her and picked bright colors to wear, according to reports. She also said that they talked about how our lives on earth are gifts of God. The Breedlove family fully believes there was a purpose behind Ben’s life and his vi-sions of peace. His mom Deanne said: “This is not about our family; it is not so much about Ben. It is about the message that God wants us to think about.” His message is about finding strength in faith and peace in death. As a tribute to Ben, people around the world have made flashcard videos (hashtag #RIPBenBreedlove) on social media outlets.

Have you ever spent 30 days not eating or drinking during the day because it was a special, religious holiday? Well, this is just one of the facts I learned about the peo-ple of Turkey. Turkey is a country on the east side of the Aegean Sea, above the Mediteranean Sea and below the Black Sea. It is a Eurasian country, joining together Europe and West-ern Asia. Most of the people are Muslims, and most speak Turkish. Turkish people look like Americans. They dress like we do in dresses, skirts, shorts, and pants. Turkey is a beautiful place; you can see pictures on-line. Last summer some Turkish students came to our house to learn about America. There were three of them, 2 girls and a boy. The girls were Gi-zem and Sevgi. Erkan was the boy. I learned a lot from them when I asked them some questions about Turkey. Here is how the interviews went:

Alec: What classes did you take in school?Gizem: I took English, math-ematics, physical education,

Turkish lessons, music les-sons, and painting.Sevgi: Mostly writing and reading.Erkan: I studied Turkish, dif-ferent maths, and social stud-ies.Alec: What is "hello", "thank you", and "My name is..." in Turkish?Gizem: "Merhaba" means "hello", "Tesekkur" means "thank you", and "Benimad-im" means "My name is".Alec: What sports do you play in Turkey?Gizem: Boys favorite sport is soccer, and other types of games played with a soccer ball.Sevgi: Soccer (which we call Football) is the most famous sport. Basketball and volley-ball are popular games too. Both boys and girls play.Alec: Do you celebrate any holidays?Gizem: In the summer, we usually go to see our grand-parents at the beach. When we get back home from Texas, it will be Ramadan. It lasts for the whole month of August.Sevgi: During Ramadan, we fast, or don't eat, during the day.Erkan: We eat at night. It starts at sunset. People string lanterns in their homes. There are also some big din-

ners for families and friends. I liked their staying with us. We got to play Blazer Tag, golf and tennis. It was fun because they learned whole different games. We also had a family barbecue and went swimming. It was fun playing American games with them. We also went to see the bats fly from under the Congress Street Bridge and then we went to see a band play. I would love to go to Tur-key because the countryside looks beautiful. I want to see the historic buildings, the majestic beaches, and the ru-ins they have there. I would like to see Dalykan because that is where the mountain-side tombs are. I am hoping to get to go to Turkey soon to see my friends, just maybe not during Ramadan. I'm not sure I could eat and drink only at night for a month. Joanne Stern, 3rd grade teacher at River Place Elemen-tary, encouraged student Alec Alden in his writing skills. She said, “I told him if he complet-ed a report on his experience last summer, when some for-eign exchange students came to stay with him, I would sub-mit it to the local paper and he might get to have it published.”

If anyone got a new bike for Christmas or Hanakkah and doesn't know what to do with their gently used bike they out-grew, please give it to another kid to enjoy here in Austin! Last year Jordan Lamb, 10 year old Steiner Ranch resident, start-ed Bikes 4 Kids From Kids and the Four Points community was able to give 25 gently used bikes to kids via the YMCA of East Austin. "Since some people had a hard time bringing their bikes to the park last year, this year we will pick up bikes on January 7th if they email us beforehand at [email protected] or they can drop off their bikes on January 14th at Bella Mar Park," Lamb said.

Twenty-six years ago, the City of Austin be-gan recycling Christmas trees, and by this point almost 20,000 trees are kept out of area landfills annually. The tradition continues this year to re-cycle trees into a free local resource. One Four Points location is RM 620 Low Wa-ter Crossing (beneath the RM 620 bridge). Trees

are recycled to make Dillo Dirt™. Also this year, the Steiner Ranch HOA has teamed up with Landscape Resources to recycle trees until Jan. 6 at 5 p.m. There is a drop off site at the entrance of WCID #17 on Quinlan Park Road and Logans Way.

St. Luke’s on the Lake Episcopal Church is hosting a “Teen Life Coaching” Workshop on Jan. 21 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.As the New Year begins, imagine your teen:• Becoming More Focused• Living with a Better Attitude• Setting Life Goals• Living with More Self-Discipline• Overcoming Peer Pressure• Turning Dreams into Reality• Performing Better Academically• Solving Problems; not Causing Problems• Staying Away from Dream-Stealers• Choosing Wisely

Teenagers and parents are welcome to attend for $20/each. Fee cov-ers lunch, nominal speaker's honorarium and materials.

Teens will hear how to shake off weaknesses, negative thinking, pro-crastination, and limiting beliefs and behaviors. Parents will learn 'The Parenting Success Formula' to help them realize parenting pur-pose, vision, hopes, goals and dreams. Registration ends Jan. 17. For more info/online registration, visit www.stlukesonthelake.org

There is no ban on outdoor burning in unin-corporated Travis County at this time, according to the Travis County Fire Marshal’s Office. The extreme drought conditions that we expe-rienced a few months ago have subsided but indi-viduals that choose to burn must still use extreme caution and follow all burning guidelines. Outdoor fireplaces and chimineas can now be used. They were banned from usage because of the open flame. Lee has seen over the years in-stances where a fire started on a wood deck after the use of a chiminea. Outdoor grills have always been allowed dur-ing the burn ban as long as they were in a com-

pletely enclosed container that would not allow flames or sparks to get into the air. If your community allows burning of brush, the most important thing to remember before you burn is to contact your local fire department. Some fire departments require burn permits. The fire department will also be able to advise if burn-ing is not allowed due to unsafe wind conditions. ESD 6: Lake Travis Fire and Rescue’s number is 512-266-2533. Please follow all outdoor burning rules as listed on our website http://www.co.travis.tx.us/fire_marshal/burning_rules.asp

National Junior Honor So-ciety students at Canyon Ridge Middle School started a school-wide drive to help "Care for Cambodians" after hearing about the terrible dental care for the children in Cambodia. Students watched a presentation and were asked to join in the cause by donating a toothbrush and/or a small tube of tooth-paste. Michaella Coughlin, an eighth grade student at CRMS and a member of NJHS, ex-plained what she learned during her visit to Cambodia. "I can't believe how awful their den-tal care is," she explained. "The bacteria from their teeth goes to their stomach and causes ill-nesses, and they don't have the medicine to help them. By do-nating toothbrushes/toothpaste,

the children learn to brush their teeth at school and, as a result, live longer. The students have donated over 600 items that will be sent in the near future.

Alayna Thomas, co-president of NJHS, said, "It's amazing how much we take for granted." It is better to give than receive.

1. What has to happen for your team to be successful this sea-son?

We continue to grow in overall numbers. We will be carrying about 70 wrestlers this year.

2. What is your biggest concern this season?

Keeping everyone healthy; get-ting my most experienced wres-tlers spread out and in the cor-rect weight class where they can have the best chance for success.

3. Who is Vandegrift’s biggest rival or biggest match to pre-pare for and why?

Biggest rival - Rouse because we are two new schools with about the same amount of experience. Biggest match is always the dis-trict meet. 4. Is there a hidden treasure on your team might be unknown right now, but is having a major impact on your season? Why?

Tristan Prukop, as a freshman came very close to making it out of district and onto region-als. He has the record for highest percentage of wins.

5. Do you have a story to share about a funny moment at prac-tice, an interesting tid bit or a coaching habit or team habit that most don’t know about?

We play bagpipes for pre-match warm up. It gets us in a “Brave-heart” frame of mind. 6. What motivates you as a coach and why did you choose to coach wrestling?

Just being with this bunch of kids motivates me. I don’t think you will find a more mentally tough group of individuals on campus. They will out work anyone, any-where, anytime. I chose wresting as my second sport because I wrestled in Indiana when I was in high school.

"I believe this is one of the fac-tors bringing more families to Austin and keeping our market strong," Durrill said.

Another dynamic of the mar-ket place is that interest rates are at all-time lows. In 2011 Austin as a city sold 562 more homes than last year, but kept their price per square foot around the same at $138, while the days on the market in-creased from 67 to 71. This sta-tistic includes only Austin city addresses, Durrill said. "As a real estate agent here in the Four Points area, I believe the market will continue to get stronger in 2012," Durrill said. But she cautions that in today's market, pricing a property right is crucial to the sale of homes. Judith Bundschuh, Chairman of the Austin Board of REAL-TORS, said "Sellers should be encouraged that demand and prices are strong. Buyers should know the decrease in inventory combined with increased de-mand could mean they will en-counter more competition for properties." The ABOR is a non-profit, voluntary organization repre-senting more than 8,500 licensed REALTORS® in Central Texas.
