Prelude Chiming of the Hour Welcome

Introit (Hymn 127, vs 4)

Hail, the heaven born Prince of Peace! Jesus the light of the world. Hail, the Sun of Righteousness! Jesus the light of the world. We’ll walk in the light, beautiful light. Come where the dew drops of mercy shine bright. O shine all around us by day and by night. Jesus the light of the world.

*Call to Worship

We have seen the rising star: The mystery of the age is revealed. The nations will come in wonder To sing the praise of the Lord.

*Hymn 152 What Star Is This, with Beams So Bright

*Call to Confession

*Prayer of Confession

God with us, we confess that we have not embraced your love. You have searched for us, and yet we hide from you. You have lavished us with blessing, and yet we treasure earthly things. Forgive us, loving God. Shine on us with grace and glory and reveal to us your promise: good news of great joy in Jesus Christ our Lord.

(time for silent confession) And let God’s people say: Amen.

*Assurance of Pardon

*Sung Response, Hymn 447 We Are Forgiven

*The Peace of Christ

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.

*Affirmation of Faith (from a portion of the PC(USA)’s A Brief Statement of Faith)

We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit give us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Holy Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!” Amen.

Call to Prayer , Hymn 698 Take, O Take Me as I Am

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

First Presbyterian Church—A PC(USA) Congregation

Your Prayer Chain

First Presbyterian Church has a prayer group ready to lift up your needs in prayer.

In times of illness, the group prays for healing and for God to work through doctors

and nurses, trusting the sick to God’s love and care. Prayers for healing are always

appropriate because God is a God of miracles. In many circumstances prayers are

needed for God’s peace, mercy, and direction, and the trust to know that no matter

what happens God is present and at work. If you have a need, please make your

requests known to Shirley Sauls at 220-9935 or [email protected]. All

requests are kept confidential within the prayer group.

A note from Pastor Sharon—Thank you for

your continued prayers for my recovery from

knee surgery December 27. At this point, the

plan is to be back sometime around the mid-

dle of January. I'll be camping out in room 6

until I can navigate the steps up to the office.

I'll be back leading worship on January 19.

In the case of a pastoral emergency while

I’m out, please contact our parish nurse,

Meg Tonne. You can call the church office

(483-1318) or Meg directly (591-0018).
