Get the conversation started!
After enjoying a book with your child, whether
they read to you or you read to them,
continue the experience by asking:
*What did you notice about the story?
*Does this book remind you of anything?
*What have you been wondering as you read?
*Does this book make you think of another book
you’ve read?
*What was your favorite part?
*Were there any parts that surprised you?
*What are you going to read next?

Fourth Grade Character Before Christmas 4th grade students had the pleasure of listening to high school students talk to them about having good character. Students were given a polished stone that represented smooth character. Students were to keep their stones in the desk and then vote with their polished stone at the end of the day. They could vote by placing their stone on top of their desk if they felt like it was a smooth character day or by leaving their stone in their desk if they felt like their day was rough around the edges. When students voted the teachers could scan the classroom to see how they were voting. If several or more students left their stones in their desk, then this might be a sign that something happened on the playground, or perhaps the lunch room. Perhaps this would be worth further discussion. On the other hand, if an individual student chose to keep his/her stone in the desk over a couple of days, then this too may be worth further investigation. A conversation could then take place with the student. At the end of January, the high school students came back to our class-rooms. The topic this time was about the importance of kindness and choos-ing our words carefully when we speak to others. Hurtful words like: you dummy, or you jerk, or your no good, as well as that’s stupid or retarded, are what they call trash talk. Students were asked how it made them feel if they ever heard trash talk around them. The topic then switched to positive words like: you’re the best, I like you, that’s okay, and I forgive you. The high school students asked the 4th graders to focus the new year, 2018, on using positive words to create an uplifting effect on all students.
