Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce presents...annual Vote reCorD

The Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce tracked 26 potential new state laws in 2009 that might have an impact on the Temecula Valley business community. The Chamber, through its regional business advo-cacy coalition, the Southwest California Legislative Council (SWCLC), discussed and took a position of support or opposition on each poten-tial new law and communicated those positions with state legislators throughout 2009. The Chamber focused its efforts on some of the most controversial issues impacting business such as water and government regulations on business.

“We have had another successful year of communicating our positions with our state elected officials and in turn they fought hard for us in the capitol in order to protect the business throughout Southwest California” stated Roger Ziemer Chairman of the SWCLC. “We will continue to work hard tracking potential new laws in 2010 and look forward to a healthy legislative year that will involve among other things; several bal-lot measures, continued water issues, healthcare and reviving our local economies,” continued Ziemer.

The Chambers lobbied during the 2009 legislative session for our leg-islators to OPPOSE 12 potential new laws and SUPPORT 14 potential new laws. The Chambers’ official positions on each of the 26 bills have been available online at www.SouthwestCA.biz and will continue to raise awareness on particular harmful new laws by issuing call to action eALERTs via its advocacy website. The SWCLC looks forward to an-other productive legislative session in 2010.

“The Chamber continues to track important issues that impact our lo-cal economy and we are ultimately responsible for holding our legisla-tors accountable to how they vote in relationship to us,” Alice Sullivan, President and CEO of the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce. “Our legislators are very business friendly however, we need to remain vigilant in protecting our economic vitality as we move into what is expect to be a very busy legislative year in 2010,” continued Sullivan.

To reach the “percentage FOR pro-jobs legislation,” the Chambers’ tal-lied the number of times our legislators voted for the Chambers’ position and divided that total by the total number of potential new laws in which each legislator voted. A potential new law is not figured into the vote re-cord percentage if a legislator, for whatever reason, did not vote or if the potential new laws died before the legislator had an opportunity to vote.

Happy Birthday City of Temecula!DeCemBer 1st 2009 markeD temeCula’s 20th annIVersary as a CIty

Imagine driving past the corner of Winchester Road and seeing a large field instead of the newly expanded Promenade Mall. As you turn onto Ynez Road, you don’t see Costco, BJ’s Restaurant, Overland Bridge, or even the Abbott expansion… instead there are more fields. This was Te-mecula 20 years ago. As you can see today, Temecula has grown! December 1st 1989 marked Temecula’s first day as a City. As they say… from that date on the rest was history!

Anyone can tell you that Temecula (and Riverside County in general) has experienced significant growth during the past twenty years. Despite this huge growth spurt, we have worked diligently to maintain that “small town feel”, despite our popu-lation growth from 25,000 residents at incorpora-tion to over 100,000 today. Maintaining our “small town feel” while providing amenities and services that you would see in much larger Cities is part of what makes Temecula unique.

During the past two decades, the City of Temecula has com-mitted itself to quality and excellence in every facet of what we do, from policy decisions to development design standards, public infra-structure, and overall customer service. Temecula has stayed focused on building a City that our citizens can be proud of!

Temecula’s slogan of “Old Traditions and New Opportunities” is alive and well and has been a top priority since day one. Temecula has strived to create a future enriched with higher educational opportunities, maintaining the highest levels of public safety, expanded job growth, a wide variety of retail, food and entertainment opportunities, and keeping well maintained

roads, landscaped medians, and beautiful parks at the forefront of our efforts. Community Special Events have become long

time traditions that help to define who we are as a City and are important contributors to the high quality of life that our residents have come to know and love.

As we reflect on our past accomplishments, we are thankful for the invaluable relationships created with our business community, local non-profits, and thou-sands of residents and volunteers who gave their heart

and soul to Temecula, its people, and its causes. With-out you, Temecula would not be who we are today. To-

gether, we look towards a bright future and an amazing next 20 years! As the late Frank Sinatra sung “The best has

yet to come!”

Abraham Lincoln Traveling Exhibit opens at graCe mellman lIBrary In temeCula DeC. 31

A world-class traveling exhibit featuring reproduction artifacts from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois is coming to the Grace Mellman Library from Dec. 31-Jan. 20.

The Grace Mellman Library is located at 41000 County Center Drive. The exhibit is in the rotunda and is open during regular library hours. Admission is free.

The Friends of the Temecula Libraries brought the exhibit to Temecula as part of the Temecula Reads! Lincoln year-long literacy and education program which celebrates Abraham Lincoln during the 200th anniversary year of his birth.

The following are the Temecula Reads! Lincoln final events:

Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, 1:30 p.m. at the Temecula Public Library on Pauba Road : Lincoln Movie Matinee.

Thursday, Dec. 31, at the Grace Mellman Library: Exhibit opens. Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation takes place at noon.

Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. at the Grace Mellman Library: Exhibit Reception and Reopening Celebration of the Grace Mellman Library, featuring Lincoln impersonator William Peck. (The library was temporarily closed for renovations.)

Saturday, Jan. 23, 1 p.m. at the Grace Mellman Library: The Final Say.

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum created the traveling exhibit to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Lincoln ’s birth. Financial support came from the “We, the People” program of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation and the History Channel. The exhibit is being displayed in 40 public libraries and historical societies around the nation through September 2010.

The exhibit covers Lincoln’s childhood; his self-education; his careers as a surveyor and lawyer; his family life; the Lincoln-Douglas Debates; the 1860 Presidential election; the Civil War; the 13th Amendment; the Emancipation Proclamation; his assassination; and other important events in Lincoln’s life.

The reproduction artifacts on display, all modeled from originals in the Presidential Library and Museum, include: Lincoln’s favorite books; his son Tad’s toy cannon; the nameplate from his Springfield home; his stovepipe hat, which he used like a briefcase to hold important papers; a presidential campaign banner; an axe that Lincoln used to chop wood; the bloody gloves found in Lincoln’s pocket the night of his assassination; and many other unique and interesting items.

Just Launched… Valley young professIonals WeBsIte

Hello - just wanted to take a moment to thank you for referring clients to me. I met a delightful client, Mr. Daniel Bloch who raved about how wonderful you all were at the chamber. We have an offer in on a house in Menifee...and he is such a sweet man. I was his third choice there at the chamber but the only one he was able to reach so we laughed about third time being a charm...LOL

Thank you again! I really appreciate it!!
