Celebrations Special

Dear colleagues,

This issue of Scribbles is a Celebrations Special - we bring you a snapshot of three major celebrations last year - Sanmar Engineering commemorating forty years; the curtain raiser event for the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Chemplast this year; silver jubilee of Sanmar Speciality Chemicals.

The issue also congratulates all the awardees who were recognised for their performance exceeding expectations. Hope to see more of us being featured in this in the coming year.

I normally share some thoughts for the New Year - to think, chew and take some juice out for ourselves. This year it’s in the form of two poems that I read recently, titled - Follow Your Dream and I promise myself. Hope you find the thoughts in these thought provoking and useful.

Wishing you all the very best in this year.

‘Follow Your Dream’ by Amanda Bradley

Follow your dream.

Take one step at a time and don’t settle for less,

Just continue to climb.

Follow your dream.

If you stumble, don’t stop and lose sight of your goal,

Press to the top.

For only on top can we see the whole view,

Can we see what we’ve done and what we can do;

Can we then have the vision to seek something new,

Press on.

Follow your dream.

‘I promise myself ’ by Christian D. Larson

To be so strong that nothing can disturb my peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person I meet.

To make all my friends feel that there is something worthwhile in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make my optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as I am about my own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful expression at all times and give a smile to every living creature I meet.

To give so much time to improving myself that I have no time to criticise others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

To think well of myself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud words, but in great deeds.

Sanmar Engineering is a well-integrated synergistic

group of engineering companies serving the process

industry, in India and abroad.

The Sanmar Engineering saga of JV partnerships

that began with Durametallic India in 1976 at the

Karapakkam village in erstwhile Madras completed four

decades on 1 July 2016.

Sanmar Engineering grew out of Durametallic India when

a small bunch of enthusiastic engineers came together in a

company founded by N Sankar as a joint venture between

him and a small family-owned business of Kalamazoo,

Michigan, to manufacture mechanical seals in India.

As Vijay Sankar put it succinctly in his welcome address

at the 40 years anniversary celebrations on 1 July 2016,

“In today’s context of short-lived Internet start-ups – a

venture lasting successfully for forty years is something

very special to be celebrated. But that is not all we are

commemorating. We are also commemorating,

• Forty years of long-term sustainable partnerships

• Forty years of market leading performance

• Forty years of friendships

• Forty years of successful financial enterprise and growth.”

Talking on the four decades old partnership between the

Sanmar Group and Flowserve, and its legacy companies,

Keith Gillespie, Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy

Officer of Flowserve said, “Partnerships like this are rare and

this one in particular serves as a gold standard for successful

global joint ventures.”

Tiffen Kenneally, CEO of BS&B Safety Systems, a JV

partner with Sanmar for 35 years said, “...as far as partners,

there could be none better than Sankar and his vision

embodied in Sanmar. We know we can count on Sanmar as

our partner and that our JV will stay true to our core values

and continue to deliver innovative solutions that delight our

customer thereby setting us above all others.”

Recounting the history of the JV, Louis Pinkham, Senior Vice

President, Crane said, “Sanmar Engineering is known for

its ethical standards and transparency, a highly professional

organisation that cares much for results as it does for the

way it gets results. Honestly, this is very unusual in emerging

markets and Sanmar Engineering is leading the way.”

association with Sanmar Engineering with affection and

pride.

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Sanmar

Engineering, get-togethers were held in Mumbai, Pune

and Delhi attended by as many as 600 customers across

leading OEMs, end users and customers in those regions.

Renowned safety consultant Nagesh Walame made

This is the golden jubilee year of Chemplast Sanmar that

began its operations in Mettur in 1967. To set the ball

in motion, an informal dinner meeting of Chemplast

stalwarts over the years was organised on 16 September

2016 at Chennai, an initiative led by two Sanmar veterans

SB Prabhakar Rao and R Kalidas.

A sizeable number of Chemplast employees from past

and present attended the gathering and shared their

experiences at Chemplast with much passion and energy.

The event was coordinated by Ramkumar Shankar. The

golden jubilee logo of Chemplast Sanmar was released by

N Sankar on the occasion.

Sanmar Speciality Chemicals, Berigai, completed 25 years

on 20 November 2016. Commissioned on 20 November

1991, SSCL has remained a supplier of choice to many

global fine chemical customers.

The facility started as a Joint Venture in 1991 with

Dragoco, an international major in flavours and

fragrances to make aroma chemicals. Subsequently in

1997, the Phytochemicals API manufacturing unit was

commissioned. New advanced intermediaries for global

agrochemical and pharmaceutical industries have been

added in the recent years to the product portfolio. In

2009, significant capital investments were made to further

expand the product offerings.

The ability of the employees to be innovative and meet

stringent global customers quality and product needs has

been significant all through this 25 years.

The 25th Factory Day was celebrated in a fitting manner.

Employees joined with family and attended a gala get-

together, captured visually in these pages.

It’s Silver Jubilee Factory Day at Sanmar Speciality Chemicals, Berigai

It is a tradition at Sanmar to acknowledge the best of talents with appropriate rewards. Employees who have “Exceeded Expectations” are publicly recognised and rewarded.

As a performance driven organisation, benchmarks are set at Sanmar and it is ensured that employees exceed the requirements.

Performance appraisal addresses:

• How well a person achieves goals he/she sets for himself/herself and

• How much of the goals set reflects the success of the group.

Recognition at Work

Performance appraisal is done both qualitatively and quantitatively – while qualitative assessment of competencies and skills are done in the medium term, assessment of quantitative results is done in the short-term.

To commemorate significant milestone years of service of an employee, Sanmar’s Long Service Awards are given, recognising 10, 20, 30, 35, 40, 45 and above years of tenure with the Group. This is a recognition of the long-term commitment, loyalty and dedication that an employee exhibits towards Sanmar.
