Professional Development Listing Keep Calm and Get Along: Dealing with Challenging Behaviors 1/12/2016 - 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm - Child Start, Beth Wolcott

When working with children we are often faced with challenging behaviors. We sometimes feel like we are not prepared to deal with the situation. This training is designed to help the teachers, stop, reflect, and respond in an appropriate manner. The key to success in handling these situations is the ability to anticipate triggers, identifying the function or purpose of the behavior and respond in ways that empower the child to use more appropriate behaviors or replacement skills.

Importance of Parenting and Child Development in Strengthening Families1/7/2016 - 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm - Child Start, Beth Wolcott

In order to promote optimal child development, it is important to assist parents in building their parenting strengths. To help parents build on their strengths, they must be viewed as an asset in promoting their child’s development. This course will provide an introduction to the Strengthening Families approach which centers on shifting the focus from risks and deficits to strengths and resiliency. The Strengthening Families approach involves understanding child development.

On the Spot Transitions1/26/2016 - 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm - Child Start, Maira Castillo

Busy children are happy children! Join us in a fun filled, action packed two hour program where you learn how to take advantage of those unplanned moments. These can be some of the funniest and most memorable moments for you and the children. Educational activities which reinforce topics you have been working on with your children are cleverly disguised in the fun!

Getting a Feel for Sensory Issues2/16/2016 - 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm - Child Start, Maira Castillo

There are so many tactics available for addressing behaviors in children. But what do you do when the typical tactics don’t work? Where do you turn when you have used all your tools and you still don’t see a positive change? When behaviors meet a sensory need typical consequences can have little effect on them. This training will address sensory systems and needs, how they might shape behavior, and alternatives that fill needs in a more appropriate way.

Baby Basics and Itty Bitty Details2/25/2016 - 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm - Child Start, Beth Wolcott

A fun interactive training tackling some of the struggles we encounter with infant care. We will discuss ways to support infant growth and development in our every day routines. This training is designed to teach ways to deal with feeding frustrations, how to calm a fussy baby and most importantly how to build positive relationships that ensure a loving, responsive and consistent child care environment.

Enhancing Emotional Literacy2/27/2016 – 8:00 am – 10:00 am – Child Start, Maira Castillo

FAMILY FOCUSReady, Set, Goal!

Help Children Set and Achieve Goals

By Christi Smith, Child Care Aware® of Kansas, Project Director

Children gain confidence and build self-esteem through setting and achieving goals. It helps them focus and make better decisions. Children are naturally great goal-setters. Adults should encourage these early ideas. Goal setting may be something new to children, but just like brushing their teeth or picking up their toys, goal setting should become a habit for them. Since they are just starting out, it is important to remember that the emphasis should be on the process of achieving their goal, not just the goal itself. The idea is to get children started in the habit of planning and taking action in order to achieve results.

Goal Setting Tips: 1. Set the Goal: Ask children what they would like to accomplish during the week or month and then

make a list. Writing it down helps children focus on the efforts of meeting the goal.

2. Develop a Plan: Divide up the goal into small steps to help children feel successful.

3. Record the Child’s Progress: Charts are a great visual reminder of the goal setting process.

4. Set a Deadline: Writing down the date to accomplish the goal helps it become a reality.

5. Reward Achievement and Provide Incentive: Success in itself is often a great reward, but sometimes more motivation is needed. Some rewards can include: family game night, stickers, high fives, or singing a goofy song - let children choose their favorite activity and family time.

What do you do when they don’t meet their goal? Even if children don’t reach the ultimate goal, there are still valuable lessons about planning and goal setting that can be learned along the way. More importantly, they will learn some new things about themselves and develop their confidence and self-esteem.

Goal setting can transform into a powerful belief that dreams can come true if they work hard enough to achieve them.

Attracting Parents to your Business

If you are currently experiencing trouble filling child care spots, here are a few tips to help you out:

Open House- Offer an open house to show off your business. By allowing people to tour your facility, parents have a better opportunity to see how they feel about your business and to get to know you on a more personal level.

Word of Mouth- Most people feel comfortable checking on a child care business that is recommended by someone they know. You should always encourage friends and family to spread the word about any openings you may have.

Internet Advertising- Creating a personal website for your business can also be a good opportunity to attract new business. Offering a picture tour of your home or facility is a great way to provide parents a more in-depth look at where their children will be spending a majority of their time. Post pictures of field trips, meal times, and other important events to give a better idea of your activities.

Update Vacancies – Keeping your vacancies and profile up to date will help your name be referred to more parents. You can update vacancies using the form below, online, or by calling Child Start.

Don’t forget to register for the following new trainings:

•Keep Calm and Get Along: Dealing with Challenging Behaviors- Beth Wolcott

•On the Spot Transitions - Maira Castillo

•Importance of Parenting and Child Development in Strengthening Families- Beth Wolcott
