Future out of reach, present touching fingertip

Tea brings unknown health benefitBY LAURYN MERRIETT

    Co Editor in Chief

Tea is widely used in many different

cultures for many different things. I for

one, love tea and what I am about to

share with you is some things of which I

was unaware. For all you tea lovers, here

are some more things to adore about one

    of the worlds favorite drinks.

    1) Green tea is helpful in interferingwith the growth of breast, lung, stomach,

and pancreatic cancer. It also can prevent

the clogging of arteries, burn fat, and

reduce the risk of neurological disorders.

    2) Black tea, though it has the highest

caffeine content, can protect the lungs

from damage caused by cigarette smoke

and also can reduce risk of stroke.

    3) White tea has the most potent

    anticancer properties compared to other

teas. It is uncured and unfermented, so

it is really nice if you want something a

    bit lighter.

    4) Oolong teas antioxidants can lower

cholesterol and is claimed to also help

    with weight loss.

    5) Chamomile tea, widely known as

being a very calming tea, also helps

prevent loss of vision as well as nerve

and kidney damage. It can also stunt thegrowth of cancer cells.

    6) Hibiscus tea when consumed three

times a day can lower blood pressure.

    7) Rooibos tea has cancer-ghting

    properties

    8) Instant tea is very popular and most

easily available, but it may contain very

little actual tea and is mostly just sugar

    and articial sweeteners. During the

process to make instant tea, 90 percent of

the antioxidants that make tea so healthy

is lost. If you would like to ben

from the qualities listed above, I wo

    recommend loose tea.

Especially with this being the new y

and everyone promising to be health

hopefully, these facts will help you k

resolutions in a fun and tasty way.

    Recently, for my birthday, someone

who knows me very well gave mea birthday gift that t me, but more

    interestingly, that made me think.

The gift is called a Buddha Board

Mini. Basically it is just a special

type of paper propped up on a canvas.

It comes with a brush that you dip in

water and paint onto the canvas. All

of this seems relatively plain jane,

but theres a catch. The masterpiece

    that you createdisappears after about

    thirty seconds

Now this may seem really silly to

you, but the Buddha Board Mini is

not just something hopeless artistsand art enthusiasts hoard in their

homes among other such trinkets. It

    has a message.

Buddha Board Mini is inspired by the

Zen idea of living in the moment. It

is meant to teach you to master the art

of letting go, of living in the moment.

For example, one of the symbols

drawn as an example is Enso. Enso

innite art gently encourages you to

value the here-and-now. Enso comesfrom the Japanese word circle and

is a simple, single brushstroke that

represents innity and the ow of

life. It is an artistic expression of the

    moment.

    This thoughtful gift made me

think about living in the moment. I

sometimes think too much and make

    myself anxious, usually about the

future. The future scares me, which

I know is clich, and maybe eve

    little cowardly. The unknown sca

humans, we like to know what

going to happen to us; it makesfeel safe. A lot of things in life are

    just terrifying but difcult; think

too much can usually be trauma

    Sometimes when our minds

thoughts are not in the moment,

emotions of the moment pass us

they leave us and we are left wish

we had been able to experience al

    those moments, but more importan

we are left wishing we had been

there to experience all of the emotibehind the moments.

I am a strong believer in feel

every emotion we are meant to f

To think about the future and

    fearful emotions that come with

instead of the emotions of the pres

seems a waste to me. We can

touch the future; it is and always w

be out of our grasp, but the presen

    touching our palms right now.

How to make the most out of 2015

    By ALY BOBOAds Editor

With 2014 ofcially over and 2015 hav-

ing just begun, the traditions of ringing in

the New Year are at their peak. Everyone

seems to make New Years resolutions

but breaking your habits is a hard task to

accomplish. Instead of a complete self

reversal to better yourself this New Year,

here are ve ways to better your year.

to the outside world. 2014 was the year

Want to start off the new year right

with the perfect holiday treat? Here is

an easy recipe on how to make choco-

late caramel cookie bars for your friends

and family. This recipe is good for up

to 16 bars. This was based on a recipe

    found on marthastewart.com.

    Ingredients:

    For the Crust:

    4 1/2 ounces (9 tablespoons)

    unsalted butter, room temperature, plus

    more for parchment

    1/4 cup packed light-brown

    sugar

    1 1/2 cups all-purpose our

    1/4 teaspoon table salt

    For the Chocolate Caramel:

    10 1/2 ounces milk chocolate,

    chopped (2 cups)

    1 1/2 cups granulated sugar

    1/4 cup water

    3 ounces (6 tablespoons) unsalt-

    ed butter

    1 cup heavy cream

    1/2 teaspoon table salt

    1 tablespoon sea salt

    Directions:

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Make the crust: Line a 9-inch square

baking pan with parchment, leaving an

overhang on all sides; butter parchment,

    excluding overhang. Beat butter and

brown sugar on medium speed until pale

and uffy, about 3 minutes. Add our

and table salt, and beat until just com-

    bined.

Step 2: Press dough evenly into pan,

and bake until lightly browned, about

    minutes.

Step 3: Make the chocolate caramel:

Place chocolate in a medium bowl.

Heat granulated sugar and water in a

    small saucepan over medium-high he

washing sides of pan with a wet pastr

brush to prevent sugar crystals from

forming, until amber, 10 to 12 minuteRemove from heat. Add butter, cream

and table salt. Bring to a boil, stirring

until smooth. Pour over chocolate. Le

stand for 2 minutes. Stir to combine,

let stand until cool, about 10 minutes

Step 4: Pour mixture over crust. Refri

erate at least 4 hours, or overnight. R

a knife around edges; lift parchment t

remove whole bar from pan. Sprinkle

with sea salt. Trim edges, and cut into

    16 bars.

of technology and who is to say 2015 will

not be either but getting out of the house

more is a sure way to make this year more

enjoyable. Putting down the cell phones,

laptops, and tablets that are enjoyed so

much and exploring what is around will

set you up for a great start this New Year.

2- Pick up a good book. Reading is

    relaxing, promotes your vocabulary,

and is a great way to pass the time.

2015 also has some great books com-ing out, so the list of choices is endless.

3- Get hooked on a new series. There

is nothing better than falling in love with

the characters of a TV show, and what is

a new year without a new addicting se-

ries to dig into. Whether a new one is

starting or an old one catches your in-

terest there are plenty of grabbing TV

show s to hook you until the very end.

4- Explore your city. Sugar Land

and Houston are home to so many hid-

den gems that many do not even kn

    about. From restaurants like T

Hobbit Caf to quirky and cool str

tures like the Before I Die W

5- Try new things. Whether you

    a picky eater or a play-it-safe kind

person, 2015 is the perfect year to

perience all you have missed out

Trying the calamari at your favorestaurant or riding the roller coaste

Kemah are things that are impossi

to regret. New experiences go hand

hand with the New Year and are a tic

into happiness as this year progress

    Anticipation rises for 2015

    By WILL HERNANDEZ

    Reporter

With 2014 behind us, millions of gamers

have been looking to what is ahead. The

    PS3/Xbox 360/Wii generation is most-

ly in the past. Although, a few games

here and there are still being developedfor them. But 2015 is an important year

for many, as the PS4, Xbox One, and Wii

Us capabilities will be fully explored,

    both visually and gameplay-wise. Here

are three games that have people in a

frenzy. All are set to come out this year:

It is safe to say that after Nintendos

11/5/14 Nintendo Direct, The Legend of

Zelda: Majoras Mask 3D is everyones

most anticipated game of this year, at

least for Nintendo fans. The reaction it

got all over the games industry and me-dia is evident of that. Majoras Mask

was originally released on the Nintendo

64 during the consoles late stages. Be-

ing overshadowed by the PS2s release,

most never got to experience Majoras

Mask as they did with its predecessor,

Ocarina of Time. It also did not help its

case that it was not an Ocarina of Time

clone. Nintendo went for a tone that

was dark, creepy, and just straight-up

different from every prior Zelda release.

Since then, it has gone on to garner a

huge fanbase, some even citing the ever

so eerie game as their favorite Zelda...

ever. Following the release of Ocari-

na of Time 3D, Zelda fans wanted the

same new-school treatment that fan-fa-vorite Ocarina of Time got. Fans even

went as far as to start a petition asking

Nintendo to make a Majoras Mask 3D,

    called Operation Moonfall. After three

long years of begging, and easter eggs by

Nintendo, Majora's Mask 3D was nal-

ly announced for a Spring 2015 release.

The fun picks back up this summer.

Batman fans around the world rejoiced

    when Rocksteady Studios announced the

sequel to the critically acclaimed Bat-

man: Arkham City. Batman: ArkhamKnight -- exclusive to PS4 and Xbox

One -- picks up one year after the events

of Arkham City. Batman is back to

take on his nal adventure in the Rock-

    steadys original universe. The Arkham

franchise, dating back to Arkham Asy-

lum, has been consistently praised for

    its free-owing, responsive, and excit-

ing combat. With the power of PS4 and

Xbox One, Rocksteady has said that

Yoga benefits the bodyBy SAMEEN SIDDIQUI

    News Editor

When people ponder about yoga, they

probably imagine random poses that do not

actually benet the human body. On thecontrary, yoga is a benecial exercise that

    helps with exibility, strength, posture,

stress related problems and much more.

    Dispelling myths about yoga must

begin at the beginning. It dates back to

the fth century Indian tradition that

helped to relieve the mind and body

spirit. Even though it requires an

abundance of patience, the poses help

to stretch out all tight muscles that are

the building blocks to feeling less stiff

and tired during the course of each day. Many people believe that yoga does

not help improve muscle tone, but this

is not the case. Certain styles, such as

power yoga, can become very physical

with poses like upward dog, downward

dog and plank pose. It is also useful for

those that are in need of a better pos-

ture. The different poses that are used

    Study for SucceSS

in yoga build up strong core muscles

that make people sit up straight. When

people are feeling very stressed out from

work, school, tests, sports, and other dai-

ly chores, yoga is the go to answer fora more relaxed state of mind and body.

Another way that it helps to relax the

mind and body is that certain styles of

yoga help people to maintain a consis-

tent breathing pattern. It also lowers

blood pressure and helps people to have

a slow heart rate. Having a slow heart

rate is benecial for people with high

blood pressure, heart disease or peo-

ple who have had a stroke in their life.

There are many types of yoga s

as Bikram and Jivamukti. Some ty

of yoga may be easy, but Bikram y

is very arduous. It is when people

    Some students have trouble when

it comes to studying for tests, quiz-

zes or just reviewing for their class-

es. Here are some ways to try

    and help improve study abilities.

One way that may help is chewing a

    different avored gum while study-

ing and chewing the same avor of

gum before taking a test or a quiz.It is supposed to reinforce memory.

Another way is while reading a book

relevant to the test or just skimming

through previous notes from a class, jot

down points on an index card. Also, it

might be a great help if notes are written

    using different colored pens. Color-cod-

ing is supposed to be a memory aid.

As for people who do not have trou-

    ble multi-tasking, listening to mu-

sic while studying can be an absolute

help. However, avoid listening to rock

or music genres that could cause dis-

traction, because it will denitely take

    attention away from studying, espe-

cially if reading is the task assigned.

Before the beginning of every math test,

it is best to write down the formulas rst.

    Discipline is important. Students tend

to be on their phone or their devices most

of the time, either playing games, talking

to friends, or going on social media. Stu-dents must know their responsibilities or

discipline themselves by learning to put

down their phones and study. It is also

about learning how to manage time wisely.

The one common thing that stu-

dents tend to do, when given a project

or review a few days or weeks before a

test/exam, is they tend to wait until the

last minute to do their reviews. It is a

common mistake that does not help,

because there may be more than the

expected tests scheduled on the sa

day. Secondly, there is not enough t

to review every note the day befor

The most exciting game of the year

creeps upon us. Two teams clash to hold

that sterling, silver trophy we call the

Vince Lombardi trophy and be claimed

    World Champions. Super Bowl

XLIX arrives, and it will be held on

February 1 at The University of Phoenix

stadium in Glendale, Arizona, home of

    the Arizona Cardinals. Most experts

believe that the two most likely teamswill be the Denver Broncos from the

AFC vs. the NFC Green Bay Packers.

Teams such as the New York Giants,

Tennessee Titans, and the New York Jets

are out of the picture completely and look to

rise up next year. Five teams from the NFC

that have a chance to be crowned include:

    Arizona Cardinals, Green Bay Packers,

    Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks,

and the Detroit Lions. In contrast, for the

AFC, ve teams who hope to compete for

the crown include: New England Patriots,

    Denver Broncos, Cincinnati Bengals,

Indianapolis Colts, and the San Diego

    Chargers. The hardest question remains

still, who will win the Super Bowl?

    The most favored AFC Championship

game could be a battle between two

    powerhouse teams, The Denver Broncos

vs. The New England Patriots. Twofuture hall of fame quarterbacks, Peyton

Manning and Tom Brady, battle to

reach the Super Bowl. Tom Brady

    remains victorious this season after

    defeating the Denver Broncos 43-21.

    Several games into their season,

the Houston Rockets are the talk

of the NBA. It is their rst season

advancing to an early 6-0 record since

1996, a Rockets team that year which

ultimately lost in the 1997 Western

Conference Finals in six games. This

years squad hopes to go beyond that.

Led by James Harden and Dwight

Howard, the Rockets are setting their

bar very high, especially after the

    heart-breaking game-six loss to the

Portland Trail Blazers last year, but

this season brings almost a brand-

new team. On paper, the Rockets

look to have gotten worse over the

offseason, but their fast start has

proven otherwise, at least for now.

It is no question what the duo brings

to the court for the Rockets, but what

about the heavily debated bench? For

an NBA team to be successful there is

no doubt that someone has to come

off the bench and shine, to take some

of the heat off the starters, universally

dubbed as the sixth man. Off the bench,

    Kostas Papanikolaou, a 68 shooting

forward out of Greece, has been a huge

boost for the Rockets depth. Despite

averaging only 6 points per game, his

height and three point shooting ability

brings a much needed presence for

a team looking for that sixth man.

K-Pop and the coaches hope to see

    improvement throughout the season.

    Another bench standout has been

    veteran Jason Terry. Terry has

been brought in to lend the Rockets

knowledge of the game, and lead them

through the long 82-game season. Most

importantly, he has been shooting a

high .460 from the three-point line. The

It is said that in every lie is a grain of

truth. Similarly, there is most likely a

truth behind every superstition that makes

it a valid belief to many people. While

walking under a ladder may not ruin a

life in years to come, in some instances, it

could have caused harm to someone. Per-

haps there is something to superstition.

The denition of a superstition is the

    supernatural link between two unrelated

    events. Superstitions all revolve around

the idea of luck. Four leaf clovers will

bring fortune and broken mirrors will

bring suffering. Everything has a good

or bad energy tied to it that affect the

person involved. And while many may

also not believe in luck along with su-

perstitions, both are a state of mind. It

is not necessarily that spilling salt over

your shoulder will bring good luck, but

the belief that it might positively inu-

ences a persons attitude and outcome.

The more a person believes in super-

stitions and follows the ideas towards

fortune, the more positive the persons

outlook will be, thus creating a better

day already. In this way superstitions

    boost peoples condence and positive

outlooks so that nding a four leaf clo-

ver can truly make them feel lucky. It

may not be the superstition directly de-

ciding the outcome of the day, but it does

have a denite role in many peoples

    everyday lives. So while superstitions

are not essential, they are important to

    many because of psychological value.

    Superstitions have a long

    history in many cultures.

    For example, crossing ones ngers

sign of luck is associated with Christi

who would cross their ngers in re

ence to the cross, or wishing on a fall

star was good luck to the Greeks w

believed that stars were falling so

    Superstitions can help people conn

to their culture in an everyday way

will help them appreciate their roots

may not truly affect the outcome of a

uation, but by representing a belief i

common everyday way, a person may

more connected with their cultures id
