Equine Law Program Offered by the BVDC Anniversary Committee and
PRESENTED BY
CHERYL ALLERTON, ESQUIRE Saturday, February 23rd 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
At the offices of Hartman Shurr: 1100 Berksh i re B lvd , Su i te 301 , W yom iss ing , PA 610 -779 -0772 www.hartmanshurr.com
As horse owners, we have a responsibility to be familiar with our rights and duties that shape our relationship with the animals who depend on us for everything. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to have an interactive afternoon with Cheryl Allerton, Esq. and to learn about equine law as it applies to us. You are invited to come with your questions. Questions that are submitted in advance to Margaret you will get more detailed answers during the program.
Topics may include:
ESTATE PLANNING. Be certain you horses will be cared for after you are gone. There are different ways to provide for your animals and, because circumstances always change, even those who have a plan in place might need to update it.
LIABILITY WAIVERS AND RELEASE FORMS. Be aware of what you are signing as a participant and, on the other hand, be sure to protect yourself as an organizer. A few simple changes could avoid conflict.
LAND USE. As horse owners, we use the land in unique and dynamic ways. Learn what your rights and obligations are as land owners and as land “Users”.
HORSE TRADING. We all own, sell, lease, rent, donate, give away and borrow horses all the time. How are we protected with a written agreement and what should it include? Learn how you can protect yourself in a transaction and if you would benefit from legal representation.
BOARDING. The pitfalls of boarding horses is well known. Learn how to avoid disputes and have a good relationship whether you offer boarding at your farm or are boarding your horse.
This is a very important program offered to BVDC members by the Anniversary Committee. Cheryl Allerton is hosting the program at her offices and space is limited to the first 20 members who register. Please e-mail [email protected] or call 302-465-2200 to register.
Cheryl J. Allerton is a partner of the law firm Hartman Shurr in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. Cheryl concentrates her practice in litigation, including commercial litigation, equine law, animal law, landlord/tenant, agricultural law, alternative dispute

Cheryl is a certified mediator, offering evaluative, transformative and facilitative mediation services; is accredited as an arbitrator by the American Bar Association; and is a certified Collaborative Law Practitioner. BVDC Historic Facts… from 1999:
Did you know that in 1999 the board meetings were held in the Allam
House at New Bolton and dinner was served at 6:00 PM! Doris Grassi
was President, David Hirsh was Vice President, Connie Goracci was
Treasurer and Rochelle Temple was Secretary.
The first program in 1999 was a presentation by David McWethy who in the fall/
winter and spring of 1994/1995 drove a team of three Norwegian Fjords pulling a
2000 pound homemade wagon from his home in New Hampshire to
Montana. David Hirsh put that program together for BVDC!
Here’s an article written by David Hirsh which appeared in the
February 1999 Driving Lines newsletter:

Presentation to New Bolton Center
A $500 donation was made to the New Bolton Field Service Unit. Dr. Mike Kristula and Dr. Billy Smith expressed their
thanks for the club’s continuing support of New Bolton Center.
Live and Silent Auction and 50/50 Raffle
Bernie Homer did a fine job as our auctioneer for the Live Auction again this year which netted $550. The
beneficiary of a donation using these proceeds will be decided by the Board at the January meeting. We had 5
items for this auction but the most interesting was a mink double lap robe provided by Mickie Bowen and
purchased by Bill Heuer! The numerous silent auction items brought in nearly two thousand dollars which defrays
the cost of the Holiday Party. We also sold $222 worth of 50/50 raffle tickets.

What is… ?
BVDC “Trot & Track” Program
The BVDC “Trot & Track” program is for all who drive. In this program, you
keep a record of the time you spend driving your horse or pony, and goal-
hours achievement will be recognized at 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 750, and
1000 hours of driving time plus all "century" marks above 250 hours. Any
time you spend driving, EXCEPT shows and other competitions, will count
towards your “Trot & Track” hours. The hours you track do not have to be
related to a club-organized activity. The “Trot & Track” program allows members from all
over to participate at their convenience. Hours continue to accumulate in subsequent
years. Awards are given annually at the Holiday Party in December.
To participate in the “Trot & Track” program, you need to be a BVDC member, and register
to take part in this program. Download the PDF application form available on the BVDC web-
site (www.bvdc.org) on the “Membership” page. To record and submit your hours, download
the PDF Record form from the same web page.

General Membership Meeting “Going the Distance”
Presentation on Competitive Trail Driving When: Sunday, March 17th @ 2-5 PM Where: New Bolton Center - Werner Amphitheater (main building) Refreshments will be served RSVP to Debby Donovan ([email protected] or 856-981-1868)
What is Competitive Trail Driving? Competitive Trail Driving (CTD) is a team
sport. You get to enjoy the countryside and learn an enormous amount about your teammate: your horse. The horses must complete the trail within a specified time range and then are judged against themselves. This is accomplished by pre-drive judging to establish the baseline and post-drive judging which allows the judges to subtract points for changes in the individual horse including those caused by fatigue, metabolic difficulties, rubs, etc. While the “team” will receive a numeric score, the motto for distance competitions is “To Finish Is To Win”. Drive distances can vary from 10, 15, 25, or 30 miles in a day to multiday drives totaling 50 to 100 miles. The sport is full of supportive people who are happy to help out newcomers. At competitions, you will often get the chance to drive in beautiful areas that you might otherwise never see. Eastern Competitive Trail Riding Association (ECTRA) is the governing body for competitive rides and drives in our region. Information and rules can be found at www.ectra.org. Here’s another article that describes CTDs: http://review.barnmice.com/horse-driving-competitive-trail-driving/ On March 17, come to New Bolton Center for a “Going the Distance” presentation on
competitive trail driving with Cate Peloquin. Maryland residents Cate and her husband
Ben have competed in Competitive Trail Riding and Endurance events for many years. In addition to riding in events, twice a year they manage multi-distance rides at Fair Hill. Cate is the current President of ECTRA and is a certified “lay judge” for competitive trail events. Her wealth of knowledge and experience in distance riding will prove valuable to anyone interested in distance driving. Bring your questions… because at Fair Hill on April 21, plan on participating in “Going the Distance” – the Drive. This will be a 7 mile competitive trail driving event in which you can experience all the in’s and out’s of distance driving in a modified format.
