will do just that. Simply replacing the hardware with a contemporary design will make a huge difference and can make the space look new and updated in a few hours! The days of people having to match their hardware style to the style of the cabinet have long since past.

SLHL: Do you have to match your cabinet hardware to your stainless appliances?

Sarah: You do not need to match your hardware to your appliances. You should select hardware that best complements the cabinet. The cabinets are often the focal point of your kitchen, so you want to make sure the hardware blends nicely .

SLHL: What’s new in cabinet hardware?

Sarah: Cabinet hardware is constantly changing just like all aspects of design. I see a lot of larger sizes coming out to make a more dramatic look on cabinetry. I also see a lot more fun designs, like some with glass, leather or even crystals. Instead of the traditional round knob, I see a lot of square or even octagon shaped knobs. There is also a new finish that is getting popular, polished nickel. Nickel is a beautiful, warm polished finish that just sparkles. I always tell people that cabinet hardware is the jewelry for your home. As women our jewelry is always changing; cabinet hardware is the same way and that is what makes it fun! See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

High-Fa°hi~^FABRICATIONS

SLHL: How do you determine the correct size a knob or pull should be?

Sarah: It is all about proportion when you are trying to decide what size hardware goes where. originally, there were knobs on doors and pulls on drawers. Today, cabinets are made so much taller that it can look odd to have a standard 1 1/4" knob

on a 42" cabinet door. I often recommend that people entertain the idea of placing a pull on the tall cabinet doors. This will look more proportionate to the size of the door. If a client is set on using knobs for their cabinet doors we offer knobs available in larger sizes. We recommend that you use different size pulls on different size cabinet drawers. If you have a drawer that is anywhere from 12" to 25" inches you should use a 3" pull up to a 5" pull. If you have a 26" to 30" drawer then you should use anywhere from a 5" to an 8" pull and so on. You also want to make sure that the hardware is substantial enough to pull the weight of the drawer and the weight of what is inside the drawer.

SLHL: Are there certain styles to select based on the cabinetry style?

Sarah: There are hundreds of options of hardware that can be used on any style of cabinet from rustic to traditional to contemporary. If a client comes in and has traditional cabinets but wants to make the room look more contemporary, we will help them find hardware that

McConnell fell in love on a Russian icebreaker transiting the Arctic. It’s not your usual how-we-met story, but then, Stone Soup Cottage is no ordinary restaurant. The cottage is a pre-Civil War home in Cottleville, about 30 miles west of St. Louis. The McConnells’ offer one seating, Wednesday through Saturday, serving a six-course tasting menu that changes every three weeks. Reservations usually must be snagged six months in advance, longer for Saturday nights. Despite the fixed menu, Carl is happy to alter his dishes for vegans and others who require special diets. “We’ve become known as a trustworthy source for those with dietary needs,” Nancy says. The McConnells worked for years in the travel industry – she was the cruise director and he the executive chef on the ship where they met. Cottleville reminds them of Europe, Carl says, mentioning that

the town has a good butcher shop, flower shop and gourmet chocolate shop. “I lived my life traveling around the world, and now I live my life in a 10-square-mile area,” he says. “It’s been a life-changing experience.” Most of the restaurant’s produce comes from Wiese Nursery, about a mile down the road. “When we conceptualized the restaurant, I went to the farm stand,” Carl says. “The owners, Norman and Ruth, were growing a few things. I was very impressed with the quality.” This winter’s crops, grown in greenhouses, include lettuces, microgreens, herbs, leeks, baby beets, shallots and four types of carrots. “I draw inspiration, of course, from my friend Norman,” Carl says. He also draws inspiration from Old World cookery, perusing 18th–century English and French cookbooks. “I look for unique ingredients,” he says, then modernizes the recipes. He became intrigued by periwinkles, a type of sea snail, and decided to use them in a recipe inspired by Old English and Northern French recipes. Periwinkles are so small that nut picks

hack! Bzzzzzzz! Whish! Whirr! are the sounds emanating behind the doors at V3 Studios due to Batman having it out with Penguin once again? no, in this case it’s Victor Hill, hard at work building a custom wooden lamp table, using a hammer, table saw, hand plane and various other pieces of equipment to make wooden furniture. Victor’s studio is his creative space, where ideas are realized and thoughts become a three-dimensional reality. daily he creates something out of wood: one-of-a-kind tables, bookshelves, bathroom vanities, walk-in pantries, fireplace mantels, bedroom sets, desks, bars and many other custom furniture pieces, including kitchen cabinetry. He even designs whole home libraries. Everything he does is custom, built after consultation with the customer. “When i have a new customer, i like to come out and view their space, see their style of home, discuss the project and talk about the direction they’d like to take,” Victor says. V3 Studios, with a name that tells people he’s a third generation “Victor,” opened in 2003 after he received a BFa in design and illustration from the kansas City art institute. While in school, Victor worked weekends as a technician in the campus woodshop, acquiring the skills and experience to make high-end furniture. He added to his skills by working in other woodshops, learning new techniques from several noted woodworkers in the business. “i’ve always been the artist in the family,” says Victor. He credits his upbringing, which includes growing up in Saudi arabia (due to his father’s aerospace industry job) and visiting a number of other countries at an early age, such as thailand, amsterdam, France and italy, as the stimulus that taught him to see things from different perspectives. “it kept me open-minded, open to new ideas and places,” he explains. one open-minded aspect of woodworking that Victor embraces is that of environmental responsibility. He is excited that he is able to offer his customers a variety of sustainable options and newer technologies. “if customers are interested, i have water-based finishes i can use, and glues that emit less fumes,” Victor says. “We can choose from a variety of woods, some more sustainably grown. We can use reclaimed doors, or other house parts. there are a whole range of products and ways to build furniture more sustainably and healthier for the environment.” Victor enjoys the design process as much as the building of the piece. “as an artist, i’m still exploring styles,” he says. “When starting a project, there are endless possibilities. i like the continuous learning aspect of doing something different every time, of designing a unique piece and seeing my drawings come to reality.”

French FlairWalking into the 461-square-foot kitchen, you feel as though you’ve been transported to France. reclaimed wood beams on the ceiling add a rustic element. by minimizing modern appliances as not to give a too “kitcheny” look, brooksberry Kitchens & baths was able to create an old World French atmosphere. a monumental stone and hammered pewter hood top the French range. the island is styled to resemble a distressed flower shop workbench in a pewter matching the hood. Next to the cooktop, two recessed niches house spices and oils. a coffee bar off the breakfast area features a sink and iron étagère. a wide plank, distressed lime washed floor complements the old World style. one challenge brooksberry faced was designing the kitchen around four doorways and a wall of windows.

Judges’ Comments: this simple, elegant and rustic kitchen is beautifully detailed. the wood beams are the perfect touch. the two-tone island and hood tie nicely with the rest of the space. including a faucet by the coffee pot is smart and functional.

Designed to accommodate a multi-generational family, this modern, sleek kitchen is both clean and functional. Two large islands, a light rail above the island counters and a breakfast and snack wall add unique elements to the space designed by Krista Howard, Krista Howard Interiors. A square-shaped island was included for main food preparation, while an “L” shaped area is for casual dining at the counter. The “L” shaped counter is topped with beautiful waterfall granite that wraps along the vertical side of the cabinet. Contemporary wood cabinetry extends to 9’ 6” and warms the space. Along the cabinets in front of the bar stools is additional hidden storage, which has been quite an asset to the space. The drop-down light rail is suspended by sleek steel posts and mirrors the wood finish of the cabinets. The rail is a fabulous alternative to task lighting. Located along the right wall, a breakfast and snack area houses an additional microwave and drawers that store bowls for kid-friendly access.

Judges’ Comments: This kitchen screams original. The drop lighting from the ceiling borders the kitchen and gives it a cozier feel. There is a nice variety of different finishes that keeps the space interesting.

Herzog Kitchen & Bath was faced with the challenge of opening up this 152-square-foot galley kitchen. Lifting the ceiling to a vault and taking down the main wall separating the kitchen, dining and living rooms achieved the open feel the homeowners desired. A custom column entrance draws you into the kitchen and sets the space apart from all others. Crisp white cabinets with pewter accents not only make the kitchen feel larger, but also create a balanced contrast with the column entrance. By building in a French door refrigerator and covering the dishwasher with cabinetry, the appliances blend into the kitchen instead of overwhelming the space.

A Brazilian cherry floating countertop fits into the bay window allowing seating for two, and a movable cherry wood island was designed to be able to tuck away under the countertop if need be. From the chandelier to the half-round pot rack above the sink to the carefully chosen backsplash, this kitchen creates a dramatic effect.

Judges’ Comments: Little touches, such as the gray sink, are very complementary with the tile, countertops and appliances. the moveable island is a functional addition. Even though the cabinetry is white, it is very transitional, and throwing in a little black in the custom entrance is a great contrast.

gegg design & Cabinetry undertook this kitchen remodel with the goal of making gray look interesting. after altering the space structurally, the kitchen was laid out in a way that it could be designed symmetrically. Using dark gray as a base color, the cabinetry evolved into a gray with pearl essence glaze that gives it a reflective property that changes with different angles and lighting situations. Curved mullions were used with mirrored panels on the cabinet fronts to further enhance their look. the mirrored look was repeated on some of the drawer fronts, refrigerator front, butler pantry backsplash, island sides and corner post details. Frameless cabinetry with an applied molding door was used to keep a clean look with bold proportions. other reflective properties include a white-ish granite with reflective elements, white glass pearl essence mosaic tile backsplash, chandeliers and polished nickel hardware. the end result is a kitchen that is gray as the homeowners requested, but it is far from gloomy.

Judges’ comments: this is truly a unique kitchen. the gray color was incorporated well. Carrying the crown molding into the window shows great attention to finish and detail.

Keeping with the luxury that prevails throughout the home, the traditionally styled kitchen is an elegant space designed to appear as fine furniture. A creamy paint on the maple cabinetry gives the kitchen a soft palette. Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry introduced interesting texture to the space through a mixture of materials including oak flooring, glazed tile, granite and a cherry wood butcher block. The textures complement the cabinetry while tastefully contrasting it. Elegant touches abound including polished brass fixtures, Monticello brass cabinet hardware and dual crystal chandeliers. Appliances are concealed in matching wood panels further lending to the fine furniture appeal. Set up to allow for entertaining without interfering with the cooking space, a beverage center is equipped with refrigerator drawers, a wine cooler and a single dishwasher drawer. Faux finishes by Corinne Jones Interiors add to the elegant and timeless look.

Judges’ Comments: This elegant and traditional kitchen has nice proportions. The wood countertop/island is a terrific addition, and the double edge on the top is a well-designed detail. The inset refrigerator blends perfectly with the rest of the cabinetry.

glimpses of a serene lake peek through the trees. Situated above the lake, a winsome wood lodge with an expansive outdoor patio draws you farther through the woods. At the end of the path, the lodge greets you with lush landscaping and solid wood double doors with black rivet detailing and custom black iron handles. Taking your first steps into Ray and Diane Barrett’s lodge, you are overcome with a feeling of warmth and welcome, plus a killer view. Built on 100 acres just 40 minutes from their home in St. Louis, the Barrett’s lodge was developed with family in mind. “Ray and I wanted a place where we could gather with all of our children and grandchildren,” says Diane. And with 24 grandchildren between them, the lodge had to be durable. “We don’t want anyone to worry about the kids breaking anything or making a mess while they are here,” says Ray. “The kids love that they are able to visit and fish, go out on the boat and hit golf balls.” With the goal to create a relaxing, stress-free environment for family and friends to escape and get away, the Barretts enlisted Diane’s brother, builder Ron Emmenegger, president of Ronald E. Emmenegger Enterprises, Inc., to custom build their second home. The lodge had to be positioned in the perfect location to produce the breathtaking views of the lake that Diane and Ray desired. “Determining where the site would be was the most important part of this project,” says Ron. “The view is what makes this place.” Also on the Barretts' list of must haves for the lodge was an open concept and plenty of room for visitors. Completed in just seven months, The Lodge at Barrett Farms, as they call it, is the epitome of rustic elegance. Entering the home, 25-foot-wood-beamed ceilings keeps the room feeling open, yet warm. Ray and Diane utilized various wood types and colors, but kept everything warm, not too dark. Working with Ron, they were able to hand select each board before it was stained the appropriate color. “Ron works with you to make your home completely custom,” says Diane. “The quality of his work is incredible, and he is so accommodating and flexible,” adds Ray. A cozy seating area across from a walk-up bar provides additional seating when entertaining, which the Barretts do often. White and brown houndstooth chairs with leather back and nailhead detail are arranged in a circle creating a conversation area. The bar does not have a typical bar look and was designed to invite guests to walk up and make or get a drink whenever they wanted. Open shelves custom built by Ron display glasses, and horseshoe details, found throughout the entire lodge, add charm. Diane worked with her staff at Diane Breckenridge Interiors to find the perfect pieces to complete the lodge look. “My staff pushed me when I needed the extra push,” she says. “As a designer in your own home you get too close to the project and often need someone else to help you.” Between the bar area and the family room hangs a custom antler chandelier by CDN Antler Designs, Inc. The chandelier ties all three rooms together. A stone fireplace surround by Craftmasters, LLC is the focal point of the family room. The family loves to cozy up around the fire on a cool fall evening or watch the snow fall during the winter months. A custom plaid ottoman from Diane Breckenridge Interiors sits atop an area rug from Rugs by Saga providing plenty of seating space in the central hub of the home. Antique details top the custom wood fireplace mantel.

Driving up a long, wooded path,

Diane began collecting accessories and furniture from antique stores as soon as the project got underway. “We wanted the pieces found to look like they’ve been here a million years,” she says. For a home in the country, the kitchen is fully equipped for city entertaining, complete with two dishwashers, four trash bins, warming ovens and more. A large golden beach granite island by Stone Fabricators functions as both a serving platform for food and drinks as well as extra seating. Knotty alder cabinets by Archway tie in with the wood ceiling and trim. The custom copper range hood by James Custom Sheet Metal, Inc. is a warm contrast from all of the wood in the space. The open multi-purpose space of the main room allows for family and friends to sit and hang out, eat or enjoy one of two outdoor porches. Large windows allow visitors to see from the family room to the porch and vice versa integrating the spaces so that no one feels disconnected from the party. The all-season porches can be enjoyed in the summer or the winter thanks to screens installed by Broadview Screen. With a slew of visitors at any given time, it was important that the lodge have plenty of space for family and friends to spend the night. Three guest rooms down a side hallway each have their own unique personality as well as bathroom. Each room theme was inspired by a fabric found by Diane and her staff. Heading down the long hallway, the first guest room you come to is classified as the deer room or red room. Rich red walls are adorned with antlers varying in shape and size. A red and cream deer fabric frocks the bed that is topped with a red double-door headboard available through Diane Breckenridge Interiors. Behind the bed a cedar accent wall breaks up the red and matches the cedar trim on the doors and windows. The next room over is fondly known as the horse room or green room. Diane found a blanket resembling one you would find under a horse saddle to start the inspiration for the room. The Barretts have always had racehorses and Ray’s granddaughter Lauren is a rider, so they knew horses would be the theme for one of their rooms. Red accents pop against the serene green walls. The room also has a nice view of the porch and lake. At the end of the hall is the gray room. The room has a cool color scheme and a traditional iron bed. A red and black buffalo check spread brings in color. A window was added to let in natural light. Down the opposite hallway is the master bedroom. The room was inspired by the custom bed by Flat Rock and the unusual fabric for the bedspread, which is a bright blend of pumpkin, yellow and turquoise. Instead of building a walk-in closet, custom built-in wall cabinets were constructed by Cheltenham Construction Services, Inc. The cheery pumpkin walls lighten the space as well as natural light from a window that was added to extend their view of the lake. Despite all of the original details throughout the home, the true star is the outdoor space. A deck spanning the back of the home allows outdoor seating for eating or relaxing and also has access to the yard and lake on both sides. As the sun begins to set, staring out across the lake with a glass of wine in hand is truly the best way to finish up a day at the lodge.

SEASON

By Catherine thoele, aiFD, CFD

BridalBlossoms Fresh flowers add excitement, romance and magic to every "I do." They add personality to the ceremony and reception, no matter how big or small. When shopping for wedding flowers remember these simple tips: Determine your floral budget. Next, choose an experienced, professional florist that you are comfortable working with. Be open, honest and realistic with yourself and with your florist. Shopping for wedding flowers should be fun! A reputable floral professional can guide you wisely and happily through the entire process. Remember, your florist wants you to have beautiful wedding flowers even more than you do. Most classic wedding flowers such as roses, hydrangea, orchids, stephanotis and calla lilies are now available year round, so the age-old advice to choose flowers that are in season is not nearly as important as it used to be. Competent professional florists study for decades to learn about the availability, shelf life and performance characteristics of the flowers they use in wedding work, so seek professional guidance. Below is a breakdown of flowers by season to help you in creating your dream wedding. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Malbec has taken a wild ride from near obscurity to becoming one of the most popular red wine grapes of the past decade.

one of the original six grapes allowed to be blended in the making of Bordeaux wines, it was largely cultivated in the Cahoors region of France. In the 1860s, a French agricultural engineer brought some malbec vines to argentina, where they were cultivated to be blended in with Cabernet Sauvignon (in the Bordeaux model). When the argentine wine industry was looking to upgrade the quality and image of its wines for international export in the 1980s, they found that argentine malbec grapes produce a wine of intense color with a very pleasing combination of fruit and spice, and a velvety texture that falls right in line with the palate of most wine drinkers (especially in the US).

It also is remarkably food-friendly – standing up to both the pungent flavors of garlic-based cuisines like Italian and to the richness of red meats,

especially steaks and chops (which are an integral part of argentine meals).

therefore, it really comes as no surprise that the grandchildren of Italian immigrant Valentin Bianchi, who founded a winery in the southernmost part of the country’s Mendoza region in 1928, are avid food lovers who greatly appreciate how their heritage and the wine they produce are intertwined.

raul Bianchi heads this still family-owned winery, one of the oldest in argentina, and is an accomplished outdoorsman. he likes nothing better than to gather his large, extended family of siblings, children, cousins, aunts and uncles at the winery, which is surrounded by the Estate’s vineyards in the foothills of the andes Mountains, for a traditional pit barbecue featuring game like wild boar. the meat is always accompanied by salad and vegetables grown on the property of over 725 acres, and

heaping plates of pasta and rice (a nod to both Italian and Argentine traditions).

Before cooking, the meat is trimmed of excess fat and covered with a dry rub of salt, pepper and wild herbs. Raul is not adamant on the kind of wood used for the barbecue. He says the real key to the proper outdoor cooking is to have command over the fire, closely regulating the temperature to make sure the meat is not under nor over done.

The vegetables are sautéed in olive oil that comes from the fruits of the winery’s olive trees, accentuated with the garlic that sustained and fortified their Italian grandparents in their new homeland.

Though it’s now summer in Argentina, barbecue isn’t restricted to this time of year. As the region’s winters are a bit milder than in St. Louis, Raul can be found tending to his pit year-round. And, he always has a glass of one of the many levels of Valentin Bianchi’s malbecs at the ready – value-priced

Elsa, lightly oak-aged Valentin, the premium-priced Famiglia Bianchi, and the super-premium Particular Malbec. The malbec he chooses for the evening’s repast largely depends on how much finesse and complexity he believes the meal needs. But, he is proud to point out every one of his malbecs is up to the challenge.

Valentin Bianchi was one of Argentina’s pioneer wine exporters. Their wines have been available in the US since malbec started making its climb to fame as a varietal. You can channel the Argentine experience by serving a great piece of game meat, a well-grilled steak or sit down to a hearty Italian meal accompanied by Argentina’s signature red wine that has been on a wild ride to stardom. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

▲ The original home of Valentin and Elsa Bianchi now sits in the middle of the Elsa Bianchi vineyards.

After working together on the upper levels of their home, a young Des Peres family had found their collaboration with Ellen Wortham, ASID, of JE Design Group so successful that when it came time to finish the basement, she was their first call. The couple wanted the lower level to accommodate a play room for their three young daughters, storage for a wine collection, a full kitchen for entertaining, a game area and a home theater—a tall order for a space that’s just over 1,000 square feet. “Their wish list was within reason, but it was a lot to fit in that space,” agrees Wortham. Her solution was an open floor plan—a departure from the defined rooms upstairs—that allowed one section to flow into another, forcing “a lot of the areas to be dual-function,” she says. One end of the room, for example, houses both a stage for little girls’ dance performances and a drop-down projection screen for the home theater. The kitchen’s peninsula provides buffet space for parties and doubles as a surface for art projects.

With a palette of blacks, grays and metallics, the basement’s “edgier, almost industrial” look was another departure from the house’s first and second floors, which sport a traditional décor. One of the space’s most distinctive—and contemporary—features, a stepped ceiling with a serpentine edge whose taller sections were painted black, was the result of some creative problem-solving, a way to hide the heating and cooling elements that ran through the center of the basement ceiling. “It was a really creative work-around,” says the homeowner. “The black added drama and depth, and it enables us to have nine-foot ceilings in much of the space.” “People are afraid of dark ceilings, but that black ceiling is like an infinity—it disappears,”Wortham adds. But lighter walls, white cabinetry in the kitchen and other more traditional touches keep the industrial elements from being too hard-edged. The warm cedar of the wine room contrasts with the corrugated metal over the game counter, while the bright apple green accent wall at one end balances the dark-hued, formal wallpaper at the other. That combination of finishes makes the lower level “every bit as much a kids space as it is an adult space,” Wortham explains.

A MAtter ofTaste relegated to a scullery or outbuilding, the kitchen has gradually evolved into one of the most important rooms of the home. Today’s open floor plans have transformed the kitchen into a space for entertaining, as well as preparing meals – a gathering place where style now rivals function. Whether remodeling or building a new home, cabinets are the most visible of a kitchen’s components and fundamental to its design. The choices are virtually endless – vintage or contemporary; stock, semi-custom, or custom; materials, hardware, and finishes; raised or recessed panels… the list goes on. While the decisions can seem overwhelming, ultimately it’s a matter of your personal taste and flair. Selecting cabinetry that reflects your home’s architectural styling and décor integrates a beautifully designed kitchen with its surrounding living spaces, clearly stating, “Good meals and great memories are made here.”

Characterized by design of the Elizabethan to Georgian periods (1558–1811): Ornate, rich, and elegant. Dark finishes and classic woods, predominately oak, walnut, satinwood, and mahogany. Retains certain motifs from the earlier Tudor period, such as Gothic and “tombstone” arches. Intricate carving, fanciful shapes and forms, restrained rococo elements. Inlays and veneers. Neo-classical styling of the Regency era (1811-1820) emulates Greek and Roman design.

Reflective of the Renaissance to Empire periods (1610-1815): Highly decorative and ornamental. Flowing lines and curves. Carved reliefs, emblems, and brackets. Scrolls, half-heart motifs, gold leaf. Dental and egg-&-dart moldings, cove detailing. Lavish, exuberant ornamentation during the Baroque period (1643-1715). Neo-Classic era (1715-1792) revived classical lines, Roman arches, fluted columns, carved friezes. Empire period (1800-1815) continues clean, geometric lines with judicious use of antique forms and decoration and imperial symbols.

Traditional or rustic, European Country kitchens are a delightfully eclectic blend of Old World elegance and homey comfort. Materials, period styles, and finishes – wood-stained, painted, distressed, or glazed – are often combined. English Country: Emphasizes patinas, “aged” look. Beaded and inset glass doors, wire or metal inserts, turned posts. Light and/or bright colors. Country French: Cabinetry typically very dark or very light. Painted finishes range from earth tones to ivory, French blue, warm gold, and red. Leaded glass and wire grille inserts, antique brass and copper accents, beadboard, and tongue-&-groove. Tuscan: Rich wood stains, antique and distressed finishes. Warm Mediterranean colors and wrought-iron accents.

PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH (1720-1830)

EARLY AMERICAN (1620-1740)

EARLY AMERICAN/foRMAL

Early settlers relied on readily available woods – knotty pine, maple, cherry, walnut, oak, birch. Simple details and panels. Modest, utilitarian, little ornamentation. Cabinet doors suggested for early American home styles still popular today, Cape Cod, Southern Farmhouse, Dutch Colonial, Saltbox: Inset, recessed panels, maple or oak stains.

Although heavily influenced by Dutch, English, and European styles of the same periods, American furnishings tended to be more conservative and less ornate. Recommended cabinet doors for architectural styles from 1740 to 1860, including Georgian, Federal and Greek Revival: Lipped or full overlay, recessed and raised curved panels, pulvinated friezes, painted or cherry, oak, or maple finishes. Queen Anne (1830-1880): Lipped or full overlay doors, raised square panels, stain or paint, cherry, maple or oak. Gothic Revival (1830-1880): Inset doors, beaded square panels, stain or paint, cherry, maple, or oak. Victorian (1840-1910): Draws from Federal and rococo. Complex curves and shapes, arches. Diagonal beadboard, leaded glass, elaborate carving, bull’s-eye motifs. Dark woods and painted finishes.

Also called Pennsylvania German. Simple, utilitarian. Often decorated with German folk designs.

It’s hard to imagine that the 415-square-foot Old World kitchen was once a dining room, but a few years ago it was where the family gathered to eat their meals, not cook them. After living with their dining room addition for several years, the homeowners decided a room swap was in order to better utilize their space. With the idea to flip the dining room and kitchen, they would create an open, connected space. “By tying the two rooms together, we have a more open area, which allows us to entertain more in this area,” say the homeowners. Enlisting the help of Jim Howard from Glen Alspaugh Kitchens & Baths, they set out to make the switch. To create the open space the homeowners desired, Jim took their wish list and appliance requirements and drafted several new designs. “Jim brought several ideas to us that we would never have thought of,” say the homeowners. “He also listened to what we wanted and was responsive to finding unique materials.” Once a design was agreed upon and further refined, construction could begin. A former exterior bearing wall needed to maintain structural integrity was removed to open up the space. “To maintain the support the wall previously provided, five columns were built on

half walls, which defined the two spaces while preserving the open view,” says Jim. With a blank slate, the Old World kitchen came to life. A large island became the basis for the rest of the design decisions. Large in size to provide plenty of space for preparing, seating and entertaining, the island is grounded by a soffit mirroring its size. “With two L-shaped counters nested together, the island is a bit unusual in shape for a traditional kitchen,” says Jim. “It allowed for both a wrap-around prep counter and a seating area.” A round copper sink was installed at one corner of the island and provides easy access when working at the cooktop. Entertaining is a breeze in the remodeled kitchen. Equipped with six feet of Sub Zero refrigeration, three Wolf ovens, microwave and warming drawers and an additional beverage center in the island, the homeowners are outfitted to host any gathering from a dinner party to a holiday feast. Soft earth tones and antique finishes give the kitchen a traditional look, while a modern mosaic glass tile backsplash adds a bit of contemporary. Mixing the styles effectively was a challenge interior

designer Barbara Slavin faced. “It was challenging to combine the Old World look with the contemporary updated kitchen selections, such as the glass backsplash and the smooth concrete island countertop,” she says. With a larger and more efficient kitchen, the homeowners couldn’t be more pleased with their decision to swap the spaces. The open flow is perfect for entertaining. When walking in the front entry of the home after the completion of the project, Jim was surprised to have a diagonal view down the hall, into the new dining room, through the old kitchen, into the new kitchen and out the rear patio doors. “The view is the visitor’s first impression,” he says. “Being able to see the whole space so immediately upon entering the home was a nice exclamation point.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.
