Well celebrity or not it has been a devastating year for the Ellaways and for Toni best to anticipate a much happier 2017. So best wishes to all of you from Ray, Kim and Toni. Keep your chins up but be prepared to duck. Latest addition to the QCBC Committee: Val Holbrook Husband, Gordon, and I moved from Canberra to the Gold Coast in November 2014. After playing a few games at QCBC, I decided that this was my new bridge ‘home’. Following a long career in human resource management, I co-managed the Canberra Bridge Club for two and a half years. I was a member of the CBC’s Committee for 3 years prior to that. I love playing bridge and helping others to improve their bridge. I currently play at the Club on Tuesday evenings (with Bronnie Macleod) and Thursdays (with Ian Barfoot). In 2017 I hope to play in some Tuesday and Friday daytime games and look forward to meeting many more of the Club’s members. In joining the Board I am looking to contribute to the Club in the areas of fund-raising, marketing and mentoring. MASTERPOINT MESSAGES

QCBC is affiliated with the Australian Bridge Federation (ABF) and in line

with the 100% Affiliation Rule must issue masterpoints in accordance

with the ABF Masterpoint Scheme at all sessions including supervised

play. This means that players need to become ABF registered players by

joining an affiliated club such as QCBC. It is really against the rules for

players to remain unregistered for more than 15 sessions of play,

including those in supervised play. With the start of a new year it’s an

appropriate time for unregistered players to grab a membership

application form and become affiliated as members of QCBC.

Julie Jeffries, Masterpoint Secretary

Another fascinating story from Paul

Marston’s column in The Australian

George Rosenkranz, who turned 100 in

August, is the International Bridge Press

Association’s personality of the year. Born in

Hungary, he completed his doctorate in

chemistry in Switzerland before fleeing

Europe to escape the Nazis. He ended up in

Havana when the Japanese attacked Pearl

Harbour. While there, he met Edith, his wife

of more than 70 years. In 1945 he joined the

Syntex Corporation in Mexico to pursue his

research into steroids. He built a team of

world class biochemists whose research

resulted in the contraceptive birth pill,

prednisone, cortisone, and many other

steroids. During the 1940s and 50s,

Rosenkranz was the author or co-author of

more than 300 articles on steroid chemistry

and he is named on more than 150 patents.

At bridge he has won 2 North American

national titles. He has also written or co-

written more than 10 books on bridge, in

which he made significant contributions to

bidding theory. The Rosenkranzes hit the

headlines in 1984 at the Summer Nationals in

Washington, DC when Edith was kidnapped.

The ransom of $US1 million dollars was paid,

but as soon as Edith was released, the police

swooped in and captured the miscreant, who

turned out to be a bridge player from Texas.

Unfazed, Edith returned to the bridge table!

A Paraprosdokian is a figure of speech

in which the latter part of a sentence is

unexpected and sometimes very funny

If I had a dollar for every girl that found me

unattractive, they'd eventually find me very

attractive.

I find it ironic that the colours red, white,

and blue stand for freedom, until they're

flashing behind you.

Today a man knocked on my door and

asked for a small donation towards the

local swimming pool, so I gave him a glass

of water.

Artificial intelligence is no match for natural

stupidity.

I'm great at multi-tasking-I can waste time,

be unproductive, and procrastinate all at

once.

If you can smile when things go wrong, you

have someone in mind to blame.

Take my advice - I'm not using it.

Hospitality is the art of making guests feel

like they're at home when you wish they

were.

Behind every great man is a woman rolling

her eyes.

For Noting

Bridge Players pay ONLY one ABF levy in

a year however if they are members of 3

different clubs in 3 different states – they

will be required to pay 3 state levies. 3

clubs in the same state requires only one

state levy.
