I hope everyone had a very enjoyable holiday season and is ready for an amazing 2020!! And, I want to thank Heidi Bolger, a very prominent member, as well as the first female President of the Club, for a memorable toast to the office of the President of the United States of America. We had a lovely crowd on January 1st, to partake in a wonderful Saginaw Club tradition. I would like to briefly reflect on a successful 2019 at the Saginaw Club. First, how could we forget the wonderful announcement made by Mr. Mark Hardy that the Saginaw Club mortgage was paid off. How better to celebrate such a milestone achievement than with a Casino Night. Second, a steadily increasing club membership, which includes individuals of all backgrounds, ethnicities, and ages, with a passion for the Saginaw community. Third, the number of updates and improvements made to enhance the esthetics of the Club, and the fact that we had the positive cash flow to address these much needed improvements. Fourth, the first annual Hawkins Award, and three extremely talented and well-rounded finalists. Finally, a dedicated Saginaw staff that kept things moving along throughout the year, even with a few building set-backs, the staff made sure the Club was available to serve. Thank you to an amazing group of dedicated individuals! So, it’s a new year with many opportunities for you to enjoy the Club. Keep a close eye on the Club calendar so you’re fully aware of the great line-up of events and activities. Also, it’s never too early to make reservations for upcoming family or work parties. Speaking of events, we want to hear from our members on what types of activities you would be interested in. In 2019 the Entertainment Committee coordinated a few new events, like the Halloween Karaoke party, which people truly enjoyed. So, please let us know what you’re interested in. Better yet, if you’re interested in helping coordinate or plan an event, let us know that too. We’re always looking for ways to improve your Club experience. I also wanted to provide a brief update on the work in the ballroom. The Board and staff can’t thank enough Mark Bolle, a new Saginaw Club member, and Bolle Contracting for spending quality time in a quick fashion to fix the ceiling. And, Acoustical Arts who did all of the drywall work in time for a variety of holiday parties that were scheduled. Next on the agenda is to have the room painted. Then, in July, the floors, a new bar, new curtains, as well as the side rooms will all be updated and repaired. It will be a completely new ballroom and there are plans for an “Open House” later in the fall to showcase the new and improved ballroom. More information to come on that. In closing, if you haven’t purchased your copy of the historical book on the Saginaw Club, you need to get one. The book is simply beautiful, and if you’re lucky, maybe you can get the authors, Roberta and John Morey, to sign your copy. I want to thank the authors for the amount of time they put into completing the book, and I want to thank those members who provided pictures and commentary. Enjoy! Happy 2020! JANUARYThursday, January 23 RAZZIES 4 PMLooking for another opportunity to enjoy your club? Join the RAZZIES for a casual night out. This month RAZZIES are going to gather at 4 PM at the Court Street Theatre for a showing of Some Like it Hot. Following the movie it’s business as usual back at the club for cocktails and dinner.Friday, January 24BOBBY BURNS SUPPER Cocktails 6 PM – Program/Dinner 6:45 PMFor several years now, the Saginaw Club has celebrated the birthday of Robert Burns, Scotland’s favorite son. Also, known simply as the Bard, a Scottish poet and lyricist. He is widely regarded as the National Poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. Rabbie Burns was born 25 January 1759 in Ayrshire, Scotland. He died 21 July 1796 at age 37. He is regarded as a pioneer of the romantic movement.

BOBBY BURNS SUPPER continued

Around the world tributes to the life and works of Robert Burns are held through the ritual of the Burns Supper. No Burns Supper would be complete without the Haggis, the drink (normally whisky), the songs, the recitals, and, of course, the most important ingredient of all, the fun. A bagpiper is present to pipe the guests into the dinner, followed by a chairman’s welcome, the Selkirk Grace, the piping in of the Haggis with the address to the Haggis and the Toast to the Haggis. After the meal there is a toast to the immortal memory of Robert Burns. Then the Toast to the Lassies, which is lighthearted, gently ridiculing the few shortcomings of women. This is answered by women to retort with a cunning wit and a few good-natured jibes of their own. Following the toast, guests are called upon to recite poetry of their choice. The evening ends with a rousing chorus of Auld Lang Syne. Members of the club are encouraged to wear their kilt or any tartan, and reminisce on their Scottish heritage. All are welcome.
