(Above) This is a concept for a performing arts center somewhere near Denver, CO. The building and site does not exist; I chose to draw this out of thin air as a drawing and design exercise. I have always been fascinated with architecture, so I wanted the building to have something significant, which is why I gave it a beacon-like tower. No perspective chart, model, or photograph was used for the linework. The linework was drawn on trash paper with a black color pencil, but I took this opportunity to learn a new method of rending by using a Wacom pen tablet to digitally apply color and still have the control of a marker or pencil. I am still experimenting this method of drawing and rendering and have expectations of it being a permanent graphic style for my skill set. Similar rendering techniques of using Adobe Photoshop with a mouse can be seen on pages 16 & 17. (Right) A SketchUp model of a conceptual plaza next to a commuter rail stop, restaurants, bars, retail shops, commercial businesses, and residential high rises in downtown Orlando, FL (see page 3). This image was also rendered with V-Ray as a learning exercise.

I was given sole responsibility to design and present concepts to the City of Orlando for the Church Street urban plaza site of SunRail, central Florida’s commuter rail. I was also responsible for the inventory and analysis of the site’s existing conditions.*

This commuter rail system in central Florida is a two phase project along existing railroad from DeLand to Poinciana. There are 6 park-n-ride and 6 urban stations in the first phase including DeBary, Sanford, Lake Mary, Longwood, Altamonte Springs, Maitland, Winter Park, Florida Hospital, Lynx Central Station, Church Street, Orlando Health Center, and Sand Lake Road. Both county and city jurisdictions approve and comment on designs. I was involved in many meetings and was involved with much project coordination between jurisdictions, the client, and consultants.

I was lead designer for this project. During the design development stage for this particular station, I was to design the bus plaza and pedestrian drop off area. This station will be a super stop for all the 17 stops in the commuter rail system.*

I designed the landscape plan for this site and had much input for the landscape palette for all other stations. At this site, bioswales and a native, low water use plant palette was utilized. Plants are also arranged to comply with CPTED safety guidelines.

This project is a mixed-use development with a town center area designated by a central road with mixed-use buildings. I had several roles with this project. I designed small park areas, amenities areas, garden areas, art features, a pavilion, sculptural trellises and fences, arbors, and walls. I produced final landscape and hardscape packages, selected site furnishings and materials, selected lighting fixtures, and selected paving patterns. I designed the landscape plan. With certain exceptions to light requirements, the plan had an overall theme of planting by product type. Identity was given to certain streets by being planted with smaller flowering trees, palm trees, oaks, or elm trees.

*This project consisted of a mixed-use apartment building with an enclosed pool area. Retail and commercial units were on first floor along the East, West, and North side streets. I took the role of performing grading exercises and coordinated with the civil engineer and architect for water drainage and building stem walls usage. I also put together design development landscape and hardscape packages for port authority and Channelside District review.

This project consisted of high end multi-family apartments with a coastal classicism feel within the greater Nocatee planned unit development. Whitehall included a clubhouse, amenities area, and a linear park along an existing wetland. I had many roles in this project from its beginning. I took part in the initial direction of the project theme. I developed a conceptual imaging package, which included these quick sketches for the client. I produced concepts for the clubhouse parking area, mail kiosk area, and some parts of the amenities area. I also produced landscape and hardscape design development packages, a final hardscape package, and selected site furnishings and materials. Hardscape details that I produced included water fountains, arbors, a fireplace, columns, a vehicular gate, an entrance sign and logo, and paving details.

My university awarded me the opportunity to take an extended internship. I worked 7 months at DTJ Design, Inc., a multidisciplinary firm with an office staff of 100 employees. My tasks included hand plan and section graphics, digital imaging, project research, technical drafting, parking lot studies, neighborhood conceptual design layouts, and logo design.

One particular skill that I learned during my internship was combining my hand drawing skills with my knowledge of digital rendering. These particular section drawings combine hand drawn linework from a black color pencil with computer color rendering in Adobe Photoshop.

For my senior project at The University of Georgia, I proposed how existing railroad lines could be used to develop a commuter / light rail system linking Athens to other cities and the metro Atlanta area. Within Athens, I also proposed and designed a student housing complex that would be linked to this light rail system.

(Above) The grading plan shows a basic grading plan that follows the local codes. (Right) The planting plan shown to the right is for the student housing amenities building courtyard which faces the light rail stop (see page 18). There is a mix of mass plantings and turf grass areas for the walk up to the courtyard. The courtyard consists of a water feature, planting beds with ornamental trees, and tables with chairs for residents. The plant palette chosen consists of native and commonly found plants in the southeast.

This school project was to provide a proposed retail area with spaces for public seating, restaurant seating, and access to and from a parking deck. At the time this was designed, the lot consisted of a parking lot shared by a bank and the theatre. Recently, a mixed-use development was erected here consisting of restaurants on the ground level, several levels of parking above, and commercial offices on the top floor. No green space exists.

This project was assigned to experiment with architectural design. We were to redesign a highly visible site that consisted of storage units in downtown Athens. (Right) For this project, I was to design a section of fence and then actually build it. I could construct it out of whatever material that I desired, as long as it could be bolted to a 2x8 board that was bolted to a concrete wall outside of the school building. What I enjoyed about this project was that it allowed me to see how and why certain connections are used in construction. My inspiration for the design came from a visit to an art museum and seeing some geometric designs. I wanted my fence section to pop out from the rest of my colleagues’ fences, so I painted the sections bright red and neon green.

(Left) A dragonfly railing detail to be constructed out of wood and metal. A mixture of regular copper that will patina and a treated copper that will turn matte brown is to be used. Hand drawn and color rendered in Adobe Photoshop.
