  • The Al i form Pavi l ion was a project inspired by the structure and

    form of a wing.

    DEFINITION: a l i form - Of the shape of a wing.

The structure of the pavi l ion uses four canted parabol ic arches

anchored around a centra l c i rcular arch. Structural ly, the pavi l ion

is a c losed system, where the tens i le forces in the centered spine

and the compress ive forces in the cant i lever ing members termi-

nate into the base p l inth.

As a des ign p iece, the pavi l ion is meant to be a p layful yet

contemplat ive space. The structure celebrates the space i t

inhabits whi le a lso inspir ing wonder.

The piece was featured at the 2010 Spr ing I IT Open House.

  • Window table and Window plate are two projects inspired by the

preservat ion of wholeness. By keeping the p iece of rec la imed

wood in i ts ent i rety, both Window table and Window plate estab-

l i sh a d ia logue between their use, their or ig in and each other.

Congruent ly, the two pieces, being cut f rom the same piece and

created under the same des ire of appear ing l ight and

weight less echo each other s intent ions.

In the spir i t of keeping the p ieces as ref lect ions of each other,

the table and plate approach the way they touch the ground and

the way they are used; both are pedesta ls , one a pedesta l to

l ightness and l ight and the other to celebrate d in ing.

  • Exchange is a project about inf i l t rat ing Chicagos Br idgeport

Neighborhood with a new urban per iphery - creat ing a new

means of local economy, ident i ty and structure for growth.

Exchange is a project prototype and petr i d ish to explore urban

hybr ids such as urban farms, industr ia l parks , and green streets .

I t s pr inc ipal idealogy revolves around intent ional contradict ions

to support exper imentat ion and spontaneous creat ions.

    Exchanges program intends to

    invigorate the surrounding

neighborhood by br inging var ious

programmatic e lements to a bui ld ing

and a s i te that was previous ly used for

industry. An exchange for more c iv ic

and soc ia l programming ex ists at both

a f igure and ground level that seeks to

del iberately b lur the boundar ies of the

bui ld ing and the s i te as wel l as the s i te

    and neighborhood.

By re- imagining the infrastructure that

the bui ld ing and the surrounding in -

    dustry represented, Exchange becomes

a means for d iscuss ion of what i s pos-

s ib le in damaged and abandoned indus-

interact ion within the framework of a

  • Intermodal Travel represents the promise of the ra i l industry,

celebrates the memory of t ranscont inental t ravel and promotes

the v is ion of the nat ional and local h igh speed ra i l in i t iat ives .

Intermodal Travel seeks to marry and blur the l ines between c iv ic

space and transportat ion. The bui ld ing reveals smal ler sca le

spaces on the way to a large atr ium platform space - honor ing the

spir i t of t ravel whi le a lso creat ing p laces of repose and pause. The

des ign grows from the surrounding vast farm land and township

merging into the p latforms leading to d istant dest inat ions.

The structural system is centered around core load bear ing

spaces, whi le l ighter structural t russes branche between and out

f rom those cores to cover and protect passageways and create

vistas outward towards surrounding landscapes and places.

The Incubat ion and Trade Post i s about ce lebrat ing food in both

new and old tradit ions. The post i s a market and c iv ic space that

revolves around incubat ing a network of urban agr iculture in the

Back of the Yards neighborhood in South Chicago - a p lace once

at the heart of Americas food but now r iddled with food deserts .

Incubat ion and Trade Post i s a lso an extens ion of the P lant Project

by John Edel and a lab of ideas for urban farming and i ts pursuit for

regional susta inabi l i ty. More important ly the project i s a cog in a

theoret ica l farming network, as wel l as a p lace to exhibit ,

educate, and commemorate th is new movement in food and c i ty.

The program acts as a restaurant , a hydroponic farm, brewery and

c iv ic space - each one feeding the other. This programmatic

interact ion b lurs boundar ies between bui ld ing and

network and network and c i ty - re l ink ing o ld arter ies of surv iva l .

  • Connect ing the larger network to the s i te of The P lant involves

resurrect ing the bur ied ra i l road l ines of the ex ist ing stockyards

as wel l as resusc i tat ing a culture of food processes, a lbeit under

hatch market sets up both a depository and docking stat ion a long

the east s ide of the s i te as to serve the ra i l road l ines.

Centered on s i te are the anaerobic d igester components . These

components serve a l l parts of the programs by receiv ing

disposable components of the var ious act iv i t ies on s i te . Around

    the d igester i s a c i rculat ing street that serves as a c iv ic space

dur ing market hours and a ut i l i ty path for off-hour serv ice

    act iv i t ies .

Grow spaces at the top of the market make use of natural

sunl ight and harvest ra in water us ing a tessel lat ing hexagonal

canopy that spans across var ious aquaponics grow stat ions.

Larger spaces on the west s ide reach up to 15 feet and a l low for

operate any number of poss ib le grow operat ions.

only understand architecture but a lso understand the h ighly

    sensory and emotive natural environment.
