Teacher Name: Allie Guarini Lesson Title: The United States of Color Grade Level: 2 nd Lesson Summary: For this lesson, each student will be assigned one or two U.S. States to paint in the style of Jasper Johns. The students will learn about the artist Jasper Johns and his interest in making everyday objects beautiful. The students will paint their assigned states with unique designs using complimentary colors. At the end of the project the students will create a map of the United States by connecting all of their completed artworks. Big Idea: There is beauty in everyday (classroom) objects Enduring Questions: Is there beauty in everyday objects? What are some objects often found in a classroom? What are primary colors? Materials: Water colors (primary colors), paint brushes, cups of water, large cut outlines of the 50 States on Watercolor paper, Black Crayons, Tape, Power point, Projector, Specific Objectives: Students will analyze the work of Jasper Johns. Students will realize that there is beauty in everyday and classroom objects. Students will create a work of art out of an ordinary United States map. Artist: Jasper Johns is an American painter and printmaker from Augusta, Geaorgia. Johns’ Pop art paintings were often inspired by Robert Rauschenberg. In his work, Johns creates many everyday images such as: flags, the alphabet, numbers, bull’s-eyes and maps. Along with painting and printmaking he has created many popular drawings sculptures and collages.
