Theater Jones, Texas Performing Arts News - by Emily Sese - January 25, 2018 ‘Reflections, Ballet Frontier’s final piece before intermission, was choreographed by guest artist Jay Kim. This work captures a more contemporary ballet style with the introduction of turned in feet, bent knees, and inverted arms. A total of 13 dancers in black shorts and white sheer tops fill the stage in both high and low levels as they jump into the headspace and lay in planks on the floor… halfway through the piece the dancers find themselves in a striking diagonal line that adds depth and dramatizes their curving arms.’

Depicts the act of remembering a person, thing, or event and something that serves to keep in or bring to mind. Original costume design and co-created stage lighting.

Theater Jones, Texas Performing Arts News - by Cheryl Callon - September 16, 2016 ‘The younger dancers of the company got their chance on stage after intermission with Jay Kim’s Remembrance, a work that proved Kim needs to be here to stay. His beautiful mixture of classical ballet and modern allowed the budding professionals a unique chance to hone their technical skills while developing a sense of artistry through more contemporary movement. Last year, the group delivered the best performance I had seen from the younger dancers, and they didn’t disappoint this time around. The Mozart choral music has a potential to overpower the dancers, but strong shapes and a remarkable attention to precision and timing kept that from happening. They attacked the work with gusto and fierceness. Nicely done, ladies.’

Star Telegram - Texas - by Mark Lowry - September 12, 2016 ‘The other three works were from Ballet Frontier. Jay Kim’s Remembrance uses 10 apprentice dancers smartly, in a triangular formation with military and ballet moves.’

The Daily Utah Chronicle - by Kaitlin Baxter - February 5, 2016 ‘The final performance on the program [Remembrance] was choreographed by Jay Kim, another professor in the department. Dramatic music, fantastic lighting and wildly good dancing make this last number spectacular. Lots of partnering also makes this piece stand out... this last performance is well worth the wait.’

2016 ENRAPTURED - Original Choreographic Work A 12-minute work on 11 dancers of contemporary movement fused with Spanish dance and Korean Traditional Dance. Depicts the journey of having an inner grand-canyon pit of emptiness mysteriously and instantaneously filled with bliss within the first moments of meeting your soul mate. Original costume design and co-created stage lighting.

Theater Jones, Texas Performing Arts News - by Cheryl Callon - August 27, 2015 ‘Jay Kim’s Enraptured… ruby-toned background… set the stage for a fierce yet alluring piece. It’s a surprisingly tight work… nice pirouettes, notable displays of flexibility, and consistent performances qualities make this one of their better pieces... Kim’s enchanting blend of contemporary ballet and classical modern, with a pleasing sequence of gestural and arm maneuvers, create a valuable experience for the performers to explore a greater range of movement and expression, a vital tool in the competitive world of ballet… it’s an excellent dance to keep in the repertoire.’

Star-Telegram - Texas - by Mark Lowry - August 22, 2015 ‘In Enraptured, Jay Kim uses an ensemble of women making symmetrical patterns and contemporary movements that feel fresh.’

Daily Utah Chronicle - by D. Griffin - November, 2013 ‘The second piece set to take stage is a world premiere contemporary piece by U professor Jay Kim. Titled Enraptured, the dance invokes the rushing feelings two people share when they fall in love. This abstract concept is enhanced through warm-colored lighting and costumes as well as the impassioned performance of the dancers.’

The cross-disciplinary opera production involves students from the Utah Ballet, the art and art-history department and the Utah Philharmonia in addition to the Lyric Opera Ensemble. Two members of Utah Ballet will perform a pas de deux- set to Prokofiev’s music and rechoreographed by the company’s artistic director, Jay Kim, to fit the opera cast - during a key scene.’

Presented with the Utah Philharmonia and the collaboration of the Ballet, Music, and Opera departments of the College of Fine Arts.

2015 CINDERELLA - Original Choreographic Work 90-minutes of original classical Cinderella choreography in a full-length two-act fairy-tale ballet for 60 dancers. Created a production synopsis that fused the traditional Cinderella folk-tale with the culture of a professional ballet company rooted in the origins of classical ballet, set in Paris, France in the late 19th century reminiscent of The Dance Class painting by Degas (1874), with a conservatively styled steam punk retro feel. Co-designed stage lighting.

Before the Downbeat - Thoughts on music, creativity, imagination… - March Issue, 2015 ‘Prokofiev’s Cinderella, done in steampunk… A good description might be: “What the past would look like if the future had happened sooner.” … the steampunk design seems to both fit the story and give it a “modern” twist that is wholly appropriate. Choreographer Jay Kim came up with this idea that continues to excite us as we race towards production week.’
