Americans Spent $33.9 Billion Out-of-Pocket on Complementary and Alternative Medicine
National Institute of Health
Americans spent $33.9 billion out-of-pocket on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) over the previous 12 months, according to a 2007 government survey¹. CAM is a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products such as herbal supplements, meditation, chiropractic, and acupuncture that are not generally considered to be part of conventional medicine. CAM accounts for approximately 1.5 percent of total health care expenditures ($2.2 trillion²) and 11.2 percent of total out-of-pocket expenditures (conventional out-of-pocket: $286.6 billion² and CAM out-of-pocket: $33.9 billion¹) on health care in the United States.
6
Of the $33.9 billion spent on CAM out-of-pocket, an estimated $22.0 billion was spent on self-care costs such as products, classes, and materials—with the majority going to the purchase of vitamins and nonvitamins, minerals and natural products such as fish oil, glucosamine and Echinacea.
U.S. adults also spent approximately $11.9 billion on an estimated 354.2 million visits to CAM practitioners such as acupuncturists, chiropractors, massage therapists, etc.

Examining the Record
In 2011 US doctors wrote 4.02 billion prescriptions.
That’s an average of 13 prescriptions for each man, woman and child.
Each year more than 100,000 people die from adverse drug reactions.
The 4th leading cause of death in the US is properly prescribed drugs.
When you add in improperly prescribed medications, the death rate jumps to 3rd - right after cancer and heart disease.
That’s more deaths in the US than all traffic accidents in 2009.
Every year about 1.5 million people in the US have an adverse drug reaction which requires hospitalization.
That’s more than 4,000 a day!
According to JAMA, 50% of all medications are improperly prescribed and more than 50% of patients take their drugs incorrectly.
Chiropractic Nutrition 4
10
The Annals of Internal Medicine recently concluded that drugs are often prescribed because the threshold for what constitutes an “illness” keeps getting lower and lower.
In large part, this is attributable to the influence of the pharmaceutical industry.
The study also found that physicians are caught up in an “auditing and reward system” – they are rewarded by drug companies for prescribing more drugs. Then there is the “prescribing cascade” in which drugs are prescribed to help relieve side effects caused by other drugs; then even more drugs are added to relieve new side effects from the recently prescribed drugs.
11
Trends in Rates of Patient Harm Resulting from Medical Care
25.1 harms per 100 Admissions
“ . . . we found that harms remain common, with little evidence of widespread improvement.”
12
Despite what you may have heard, our health is deteriorating year by year. The rate of all degenerative diseases in this country is increasing. We have more asthma, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, depression, arthritis, allergies, digestive disorders and obesity than ever before in history.
Our children are fatter, sicker and dumber than ever before.
At the same time we spend more money, have more doctors, and more drugs than any civilization in the history of mankind . . . but it’s not working. If doctors and drugs could “give” us better health, we’d be better already.

U.S. manufacturers, including major drugmakers, have legally released at least 271 million pounds of pharmaceuticals into waterways that often provide drinking water — contamination the federal government has consistently overlooked, according to an Associated Press investigation. As part of its ongoing PharmaWater investigation about trace concentrations of pharmaceuticals in drinking water, AP identified 22 compounds that show up on two lists: the EPA monitors them as industrial chemicals that are released into rivers, lakes and other bodies of water under federal pollution laws, while the Food and Drug Administration classifies them as active pharmaceutical ingredients.
Last year, the AP reported that trace amounts of a wide range of pharmaceuticals — including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones — have been found in American drinking water supplies. Including recent findings in Dallas, Cleveland and Maryland's Prince George's and Montgomery counties, pharmaceuticals have been detected in the drinking water of at least 51 million Americans.
The list of 22 includes other troubling releases of chemicals that can be used to make drugs and other products: 8 million pounds of the skin bleaching cream hydroquinone, 3 million pounds of nicotine compounds that can be used in quit-smoking patches, 10,000 pounds of the antibiotic tetracycline hydrochloride. Others include treatments for head lice and worms.

CHIROPRACTIC NUTRITION
Chiropractic nutrition is the use of diet and food supplements to support the chiropractic adjustment and the tool for addressing the biochemical aspect of the subluxation. The subluxation is the way the body speaks to us about its needs. Disturbances in function cause specific subluxations by way of the viscero-somatic reflex. Chronic visceral dysfunction and or overload will cause a persistent or recurring subluxation.Relying on the perfect testimony of the recurring subluxation to determine nutritional needs enables the the doctor of chiropractic to accomplish great things.

Your average slice of whole wheat bread contains around 4.8 grams of gluten. Each tablet of Catalyn contains around .0125 mg of gluten - which means (drum roll) you would have to take around 384,000 Catalyn to equal the amount gluten in one slice of bread!
So, let’s think about this . . . if you took 6 Catalyn tablets a day for a year – that’s 365 days, that means it would take just over 175 years to get to the same amount of gluten as ONE slice of bread.
The smallest amount of gluten which has been shown by biopsy to cause damage to a celiac is 0.1 gram per day. This is approximately the amount of gluten contained in 1/48th of a slice of bread or 8000 Catalyn.Catassi et al.http://www.celiac.com/articles/38/1/How-much-gluten-is-in-a-normal-diet-and-how-much-does-it-take-to-cause-damage-in-a-celiac)

“The assumption that human technology could improve on the wisdom of Nature has become a primary cause of disease in the modern world. We dissect food, take out the most glaringly obvious parts, attempt to recreate them in a laboratory, and label them as ‘active ingredients.’ In fact it is the symphony of nutrients working synergistically that provides the quantum healing power of whole foods.”

Of Foods and Supplements“Nature does not produce vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, or any other food components in concentrated or segregated forms, but merges and blends them – synchronizes them – for the body’s needs. The idea that “if a little is good, more is better” leads to ingestion of mega doses of “high potency”, refined, separated “nutrients”, dismantled, disassembled, or artificially manufactured chemical supplements. This will “work” for a short time – pharmacologically stimulating or suppressing. Eventually, this method backfires and causes complications, imbalances. The body works to eliminate the excess and what it perceives as foreign, non-food. It attempts to combine the isolated chemical and other members of the complex, which normally appear in food, taking rather than giving. Such supplements do not contribute to health, they only disrupt it. Balance and function – not quantity – are the keys.”

“One of the biggest tragedies of human civilization is the precedence of chemical therapy over nutrition. It’s the substitution of artificial therapy over natural, of poisons over food, in which we are feeding people poison in trying to correct the reactions of starvation.”

Principles of Nutritional Therapy
1. Symptoms are our friends. (The body is always telling you what it needs.)
2. The reflexes/tests in the Nutritional Exam, provide reliable real time information telling you what the body needs.
3. Nutritional Therapy vs. Allopathic Therapy. Treating the patient that has the condition – rather than treating the condition.
4. Biochemistry vs. Chemistry. Using whole natural foods and supplements concentrated to clinical potency.

Why so HCL Deficient?
1. Stress: Sympathetic overload shuts down the parasympathetics.
2. Too much protein: Requires greatest amount of HCL.
3. Poor eating habits: Pig out all at once. Don’t chew food well, Drink too much water/liquid during meals.
4. Lack of Thiamine / Zinc: B1 and Zinc are both necessary for HCL production in the stomach. Zinc #1 deficient mineral.
5. Antacids: And other prescribed medications or drugs designed to suppress stomach acid production before it even gets started!
6. Alcohol robs the body’s ability to make HCL.
7. Salt free diets: Sodium need.
8. Aging: Decreased HCL production.

Royal Lee on Gallbladder and Beet Greens –“One of our common results of this high cholesterol problem is
gallstones. When you have gallstones in your gallbladder they are precipitated forms of cholesterol. I might give you a little tip here, many doctors have told me they’ve never had an operation for gallstones anymore once they discovered this little trick; the fact that beet leaf juice will prevent cholesterol precipitation in the gallbladder; the juice of the green leaf of the red beet. We all know what beet greens are . . . the juice of the beet greens is the most potent thing that I know of to relieve the distress of the typical gallbladder patient. It’s a simple remedy that anyone can try out with no possible harm and it is; I’m sure from experience, capable of relieving at least ninety percent of the gallbladder patients.”

Leaky gut syndrome is not generally recognized by conventional physicians, but evidence is accumulating that it is a real condition that affects the lining of the intestines. The theory is that leaky gut syndrome (also called increased intestinal permeability), is the result of damage to the intestinal lining, making it less able to protect the internal environment as well as to filter needed nutrients and other biological substances. As a consequence, some bacteria and their toxins, incompletely digested proteins and fats, and waste not normally absorbed may "leak" out of the intestines into the blood stream. This triggers an autoimmune reaction, which can lead to gastrointestinal problems such as abdominal bloating, excessive gas and cramps, fatigue, food sensitivities, joint pain, skin rashes, and autoimmunity. The cause of this syndrome may be chronic inflammation, food sensitivity, damage from taking large amounts of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), cytotoxic drugs and radiation or certain antibiotics, excessive alcohol consumption, or compromised immunity.
Leaky Gut Syndrome
48
My colleague, pediatrician Sandy Newmark, M.D., who deals with leaky gut syndrome in children, tells me that it isn't clear how many people have this disorder or exactly what problems can be attributed to it. Dr. Newmark says that it has been established that a significant percentage of children with autism have increased intestinal permeability, but it isn't known whether this is a cause or an effect of food sensitivities and an underlying metabolic problem.
Leaky gut syndrome may trigger or worsen such disorders as Crohn's disease, celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and asthma.
Some alternative medicine practitioners blame such unrelated problems as migraines, bad breath and insomnia.

How Antronex® Keeps You HealthyThe liver is the site of many metabolic functions of which cleansing is vital. Yakitron, a bovine liver fat extract discovered in the 1920’s by Japanese researchers, has been shown to help maintain a healthy liver by enhancing blood filtering capabilities.
Antronex®, with Yakitron, Helps Keep Histamines at Acceptable Levels Histamine is released in essentially every tissue of the body whenever that tissue becomes damaged, inflamed, or is the subject of a reaction from environmental or seasonal conditions. Histamine presence can be inactivated via vascular changes in the circulatory system. Since the liver filters almost one-third of the total body blood flow each minute, Yakitron’s improvement of the blood flow through the liver enhances the cleansing of blood.

A review was published this week by the Cochrane Collaboration, an international organization that evaluates medical research. It’s the first hard look that any independent team of researchers has directed at the evidence for prescribing drug for mild hypertension.
Guideline groups (pharmaceutical companies) have recommended treatment of all adults with a blood pressure of more than 140/90 mmHg, yet the Cochrane review conclusion finds to date, “no proven benefit in treating people with a blood pressure under 159/99.”
71
“Available data showed no difference between treated and untreated individuals in heart attacks, strokes or death. About 9% of patients treated with the drugs discontinued treatment due to adverse effects.”
Professor James Wright MD., of the University of British Columbia Medical School and co-author of the Cochrane review said, “We just assumed that there must be benefits to treating most people with mild hypertension, and that the benefits were greater than the harms.
What about the unanswered questions of harm? “For sure, there will be harm,” he responded. “The idea that any drug is without serious adverse effects is just wrong.”
Royal Lee on Weight Loss – LACC, 1955
“If you go on a diet and omit all the fat and eat your starches and carbohydrates that you get in these refined cereals you will be putting more fat on your back that you can’t get rid of . . . Sugar and flour are the first things to throw out in the diet because they are pure calories and don’t contribute anything but fat to the body. Starch goes into fat. Sugar goes into fat. If you want to fatten a pig what do you give them? You feed them a lot of corn -cornstarch.”

D2 or D3Do not take D2 - ergocalficerol (generally found in dairy and other “fortified” foods), it is inactive and may cause a build up / toxicity to the body. D3 – cholecalciferol is a more active form and a far superior way to supplement.
The Role of the Liver and KidneysThe liver and kidneys convert Vitamin D to its active form. Therefore people with impaired liver and/or kidney function will develop Vitamin D deficiencies.
The Role of the Gall BladderPoor GB function = poor fat metabolism = difficulty absorbing dietary fats -of which D is a fat soluble vitamin.

Vitamin K’s Role
Vitamin K enriches osteoblastic activity and activates proteins which direct calcium to the bones where we want it and out of the arteries where is can have detrimental side effects. “The only mechanism for arteries to protect themselves from calcification is via the vitamin K dependent protein MGP.” British Medical Journal
Vitamin K provides major protection from osteoporosis, cardiovascular blockages and pathological calcification.” Vitamin K's job is to put calcium in the right places and keep it from being deposited in the wrong places. The right places are bones and blood, and the wrong places include calcification of the vessels, bone spurs and calcification of soft tissues.

FEVERFever is a built-in mechanism of repair. The muscles around bones become warm in order to leach ionized calcium from the bones and free the calcium where it is needed to activate while blood cells. No one ever “burned up” with fever; no one ever will. Heat a pain of water to 106 degrees F, insert your finger and see how hot it is. Do you feel anything at all except lukewarm water? Yet we have been taught to fear fever.Parents frequently panic over the thought of seizures – called febrile convulsions – that sometime occur with sudden high fever in children. Pediatrics (66:1009-1012, Dec. 1981) establishes the truth by stating that febrile convulsions in children do not injure the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). “Febrile convulsions,” which mean muscle twitching from fever are really “hypocalcemic tetany”, muscle twitching resulting from low blood calcium. These muscle twitchings do not cause brain damage and do not lead to epilepsy. The biochemistry of inflammation and repair requires increased ionized calcium, because the ability of phagocytes to carry out their function is dependent on the available calcium in these cells. Ionized calcium means free, uncombined calcium in the ionic form. The ionic form means the element carries electrical charges.Although fever is a purposeful process to release stored calcium from bone reserves, it is better to supply calcium in the diet rather than withdrawing it from bones. The pasteurization of milk alters the available free calcium. In turn, pasteurized milk is not a good source of free calcium.Calcium Lactate is regarded as a good source of ionized calcium to utilize in overcoming and/or preventing calcium deficits and thus fever and febrile seizures.

Muscle cramping at rest is a primary indicator of tissue calcium deficiency. This test is a means of quantifying tissue calcium status.
PROCEDUREPlace a blood pressure cuff on the patient’s calf and pump it up slowly. Instruct the patient to let you know when they feel THE ONSET of a sharp, cramping type pain.
A muscle that can withstand 200 millibars of pressure is considered to have sufficient calcium stores. A patient who has cramping prior to 200 millibars/mercury is considered to be deficient in tissue calcium. The optimal tissue calcium level is considered to be 200 millibars or more.
TISSUE CALCIUM TEST
If a deficiency is identified, various forms of calcium and/or calcium co-factors are tested orally to determine which nutrients will be the most effective for increasing tissue calcium. Have the patient taste the different nutrients until the pain threshold is sufficiently increased. In many, if not most cases a calcium co-factor will need to be used rather than just the calcium source by itself.

T11 & T12 – KidneysThe kidneys bear up bravely and are not quick to express their plight with symptoms either structural or functional. By the time symptoms indicate kidney involvement it is late. For early assessment, look to the spine and urinalysis.
Symptoms:Structural: Dorso-lumbar paraspinal pain
Deep, bilateral backache, worse supineFunctional: Swollen ankles and puffy eyelids
Decreased urination
Signs: T11 or T12 transverse process nodulated and tender

Essential Fatty Acid Testing
A good screening test for EFA need is to test the oral pH. Anyone whose oral pH is below 7.0 is a candidate for EFA therapy – either directly, or by increasing absorption through improved biliary function.

Contaminated Fish Oil Brands
Fish oil supplements are in the news again, as the January 2012 issue of Consumer Reports tested 15 fish oil brands and rated whether they met quality.
Turns out, you might want to avoid some big, well-known brand names of fish oil including CVS, Sundown, Nature’s Bounty, and GNC – as these brands had PCBs. (I was horrified that my husband had been taking Sundown so tossed that right out). You also might want to avoid Costco’s Kirkland brand which had an enteric coating issue.
Another heavy hitter, Nordic Naturals – which is sold in high end health/organic stores was also on Consumer Reports list - for spoilage, not PCBs.

DISCUSSION:The human prostate gland contains a higher level of zinc than most other tissues. The most consistent and persistent biochemical characteristic of prostate cancer (PCa) is the marked decrease in zinc in the malignant cells. Using biochemical methods (A.A.S), this study of zinc in pathologic conditions such as BPH and prostatic carcinoma showed a significant difference in concentration of tissue zinc, plasma zinc, and urine zinc/creatinine ratio in these patients as compared with normal healthy persons. We observed a significant decrease in mean tissue zinc levels in prostatic carcinoma and BPH as compared to normal prostate from autopsy cases. It was observed that plasma zinc levels before surgery from patients presenting with prostatic carcinoma showed a significant decrease as compared to normal healthy volunteers.

Zinc Deficiency Linked to Prostate EnlargementJanuary 14, 2010by Sheryl WaltersJanuary 8 2009
NaturalNews: Zinc is an integral part of the male hormonal system, and a primary part of the semen. It plays a major role in the production of sperm. Studies also reveal that Zinc Deficiency may be a cause of Prostate Enlargement. As men age into their 50s and older, there is a natural decline in zinc. Research shows that a zinc deficiency can lead to prostate enlargement, as well as a number of other male problems including impotency. This is because the prostate tissues are highly dependent on zinc to maintain its health and integrity. Zinc increases sperm count and sperm motility. High zinc levels also mean lower levels of estrogen and prolactin thereby reducing the risk of prostate disease.

Zinc Deficiency Linked to Prostate Enlargement
Irving Bush, M.D., senior consultant at the Center for Study of Genitourinary Diseases in West Dundee, Illinois, and former chairman of the Food and Drug Administration panels on gastroenterology, urology and dialysis, studied the effects of zinc on enlarged prostates. Nineteen men with enlarged prostates took 150 milligrams of zinc sulfate every day for two months, followed by 50 to 100 milligrams a day as a maintenance dose. 14 of the 19 men experienced shrinkage of the prostate.

Zinc Test™Because of deficiencies in the American diet, clinical experience indicates that most Americans suffer from some degree of zinc deficiency. It is common for nearly all new patients to do poorly (fail) this test.
Zinc Test ™ is a solution of zinc sulphate. Put two teaspoons (10 ml.) in a cup.
Have your patient hold the solution in the mouth for 10 seconds then expectorate (not harmful is swallowed).
Ask them is there was any taste. If so, ask them to describe the taste they experienced.
