Talinka defy boundaries between styles and genres. It’s where folk,early music, jazz and tango merge into simplicity, harmony and warmth. Itsdistinctive sound explores the diverse journeys of four British musicians:Jenny Bliss, a baroque virtuoso artist; Yaron Stavi, one of the leading bassplayers in Europe; Gilad Atzmon, an internationally acclaimed jazzsaxophonist with an affinity for ethnic sounds; and his wife Tali, whosesinging has been paired up with her theatrical career.

Completing the double bill are the Orient House Ensemble, long termfavourites of the Bonington audience, who will be playing tunes from their20+ year repertoire.

He released his third album LifeI Know for Edition Records just over a year ago.The release was very warmly received by thepress, and has even been described as “career-defining”. It’s received 5 star reviews, madenumerous “best of 2018” lists, received airplayin the UK, Europe, Australia, and hundreds ofthousands of plays (and counting) on Spotify.

Since graduating from Guildhall in2014, Will has become a much in-demand sideman to a vast array ofthe British Jazz scene; performingwith broadly ranging musicians suchas Soweto Kinch, Dame Cleo Laine,Stan Sulzmann, Kit Downes, Nikki Ilesand Henry Lowther, to name a few.

His influences draw eclecticallyfrom across jazz history andimprovised music; from Baby Doddsto Milford Greaves, Max Roach toPaul Motian, Roy Haynes to JoeyBaron, and Ed Blackwell to JohnBonham. Will can be heard playinganything from traditional jazz, instraight-ahead settings, toimprovised music or avant-rock. In2019, Will recorded the duo albumsClimbing in Circles Part 1 & Part 2with Matthew Herd and Liam Noble.Here, he joins both to form apowerful trio performing standardsand original compositions.

Larry Bartley is a bassist/composer whohas been a staple of the London &international jazz scene for the past 20years as a side man and as a leader. Hehas played & recorded in the bands ofAbdullah Ibrahim, Denys Baptiste, SteveWilliamson, Jean Toussaint, StanleyTurrentine, David Murray and Gary Bartz.The trio’s repertoire consists of a mixture oforiginal compositions written by eachmember of the trio, plus their owninterpretation of songs from the jazz & soulsongbook. Under the Surface is a new Dutch triowhose debut album released on ChallengeRecords in 2017 was nominated for anEdison. The improvisations of Under theSurface are far from abstract; Rambags’voice rhymes, whispers and sings over themelodic lines of Stadhouders’ guitar andthe subtle percussion of Lijbaart. Their fully improvised concerts are an eye-opening experience.

Sloth Racket is a group that is willingto stretch itself and take musicalrisks. Cath Roberts’ compositionshave a fascinating balance betweenstructure and improvisation. SlothRacket have always harboured afondness for a good chunky riff,turbo-charged guitar, skronking saxand sledgehammer drums, with apunk-like edginess and vitality abouttheir music that makes forchallenging but highly rewardinglistening.

Rude 2.0 features the beautiful tromboneplaying of Annie Whitehead, an artist whohas worked with Chris McGregor’sBrotherhood of Breath, Carla Bley’s VeryBig Band and the Penguin CaféOrchestra. In Rude 2.0 she works withChris Dowding on trumpet, JenniferMaidmen on electric bass and AllyMcDougall on drums to create a wonderfulmix of free jazz, electronics, African soundsand reggae.

Byron’s work draws inspirationfrom contemporary and indigenouscultures. His passionate musicalknowledge and his fascinationwith the human spirit is evident inthis new music which is breath-taking in its excitement and depth.

Byron Wallen has lived in Woolwich,South East London, for nearly 20years. He was commissioned by PRSFor Music Foundation to compose asuite of music celebrating his chosenhome town, a suite which becameknown as ‘Anthem for Woolwich’.Reflecting on Woolwich’s vibrancy,multiculturism and lively communityspirit, the suite is a portrait of a onceprominent part of London in a time oftransformational promise.

Composer and trumpeter ChrisBatchelor, known for his melodic andwarmly lyrical trumpet playing, bringshis new ensemble Zoetic to thelibraries as part of their UK tour. FromEast African guitar band grooves toechoes of wistful European folkthemes and sinuous lines reminiscentof Arabic music, it is the uniqueinstrumentation, the deep bonds theseexceptional players have formedthrough years of playing together, andthe subtle sensitivity of their invitingsound which makes Zoetic so special.

Birmingham pianist and composer DavidFerris’ septet features some of theMidlands’ finest jazz musicians. Theensemble’s size is a real plus and a raretreat; a four-horn frontline big enough todeliver glorious depth and colour, whilealso small enough to be agile and intimate.

BBC New Generation Artist Rob Luft’sjoyous, dynamic and vivacious music bringsechoes of West African high-life, Englishfolk music and indie rock. His debut albumreceived glowing reviews in the jazz mediaand nominations for a string of awardsfollowed. Many will remember his magicalperformances at the libraries last year induet with singer Elina Duni and this visitwith his own quartet is set to be anothermemorable highlight of the season.17

ABOUT JAZZHOUSE

Jazzhouse (Nottinghamshire) Ltd a volunteer-run, not-for-profitorganisation brings highest quality national and international contemporaryjazz to Nottingham audiences through its Jazz Steps programme at theBonington Theatre, Arnold and other venues, and across Notts with its Livein the Libraries gigs in association with Inspire.

The Bonington provides a great live venue. Sound and lighting are first-rateand comfortable raked seating provides clear views and an intimateatmosphere. Bar drinks can be enjoyed while listening to the gigs. Accessvia buses is good and there is ample free parking adjacent after 6pm.

Jazz Steps is active in promoting jazz, including a mentoring programmefor aspiring jazz players and the offer of free tickets for accompaniedchildren and reduced rates for students.
