1 IntroductionB MUSIC RUDIMENTS TEST Instructions If you are able to continue with the Jazz Theory Program you will be using a music program that will allow you to play or type music directly into the computer. This test, however, is to be done the old-fashioned way with a pencil, in order that it can be managed by everyone without any special software. The test does not need to be done in one sitting, but you are asked to time how long it takes you to do each page, so pages should be completed once they are started. When you are ready to try a page of the test, print the page, sharpen your pencil, and start the timer. At the bottom of each page there is a place to record the time it took you to complete the questions on that page. Most important, of course, is the accuracy of the musical information, but this is information that must also be “at your fingertips”, so time is an important factor as well. Each page has been assigned a “target time” for completion, and when you score the test penalties will be blended with the test score if the target time is exceeded. At the end of the test solution pages are provided for you to correct your own work; this is a self-evaluation. A passing score of 75% is recommended before proceeding with the Jazz Theory Program. If your score falls short, it is highly likely that you will be wasting time and money if you proceed with the program at this time. Instead, you would be wise to invest some time with some of the preparatory materials that were listed in the introduction. Copyright © 2012 Peter J. Clements

    MUSIC RUDIMENTS TEST

    Instructions

If you are able to continue with the Jazz Theory Program you will

be using a music program that will allow you to play or type music directly into the computer. This test, however, is to be

done the old-fashioned way with a pencil, in order that it can be managed by everyone without any special software.

The test does not need to be done in one sitting, but you are

asked to time how long it takes you to do each page, so pages

should be completed once they are started.

When you are ready to try a page of the test, print the page, sharpen your pencil, and start the timer. At the bottom of each

page there is a place to record the time it took you to complete the questions on that page. Most important, of course, is the

accuracy of the musical information, but this is information that must also be “at your fingertips”, so time is an important factor

as well. Each page has been assigned a “target time” for completion, and when you score the test penalties will be

blended with the test score if the target time is exceeded.

At the end of the test solution pages are provided for you to correct your own work; this is a self-evaluation. A passing

score of 75% is recommended before proceeding with the Jazz

Theory Program. If your score falls short, it is highly likely that you will be wasting time and money if you proceed with the

program at this time. Instead, you would be wise to invest some time with some of the preparatory materials that were

    listed in the introduction.
