We lead and excel: the Lacsonian legacy.

Deck Cadet Elijah Jose C. Barrios of Polaris 4A was recognized by the Western Union (WU) as one of the 2014 Ten Outstanding Maritime Students of the Philippines (TOMSP) during the 19th National Seafarers’ Day (NSD) Celebration held at Ninoy Aquino Stadium, Malate, Manila last September 28.

For four consecutive years, John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University –

Arevalo (Jblfmu-A) never fails to fill the TOMSP spots since alumni Rizaldie A. Zambra Jr. and Steven Ryan P. Arillo in 2011, Mark Collin P. Solas and Daniel T. Tumadiang in 2012 and Khenan John S. Suarez in 2013.

“To serve as a training ground for future leaders to exercise proper legislation and procedures in doing so and encourage the involvement of youth on the current issues concerning the country.”

This rationale drove four students of John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime

John B. Lacson Foundati on Mariti me University-Arevalo (Jblfmu-A) never ceases to amaze mariti me world as three cadets reaped awards during the Students’ Day of the 19th Nati onal Seafarers’ Day (NSD) Celebrati on at Ninoy Aquino Stadium, Malate Manila last September 29.

Three deck cadets of Polaris 4A bagged awards: Elijah Jose C. Barrios clutched the 1st place and Joem Paul S. Nemiada clasped the 2nd on the Photography contest while Mark Emmille Badoy heaved 1st place on the Oratorical Contest.

“I encourage my fellow Lacsonians to do well with whatever endeavor they would want to

Att y. Lorna D. Gellada, university administrator and Mr. Charles Von Alava were with the parti cipants during the event.

This year’s NSD theme was “Marinong Pilipino: Haligi ng Pagbabago.”

S. Amido of Cruiser 3A and Christi an Joebon M. Monserate of Polaris 2B propelled their sails to the Philippine Senate, Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) Building, Pasay City last September 13 – 14 to att end the congress.

“PMC offered us a facet in which we could express our opinions and views on what the Philippine society should be. As a youth, we have perceived many ideas and solutions to aid our country. Furthermore, we were also able to represent the maritime sector of our society and air our concerns with respect to the maritime field,” D/C Fernandez stated.

The two-day aff air involved a plenary and committ ee session in which they were given a power in proposing bills whereas once approved by the whole youth congress, these will be directed and opened for deliberati on and approval.

“This congress served as a stepping stone of the youth to act on the issues concerning the environment and the country. Somehow, I felt that I have done my part as a leader,” D/C Fernandez added.

Lacsonians are young physicists too! This was revealed by four students of

John B. Lacson Foundati on Mariti me University – Arevalo (Jblfmu-A) as they garnered awards during the 27th Nati onal Physics Olympics and 22nd Nati onal Physics Fair at Maxino College, Bagacay, Dumaguete City, April 2 – 5.

Midshipmen Mark Lester G. Guerra, Angelo F. Casañare, Mateo L. Lallab IV and Mark Joseph P. Pagdato won as 1st runner up in professional category and 2nd runner up in college category.

“Even though we are in a mariti me insti tuti on, this truly proves that we can also compete and excel in such competi ti ons,” Mdpn. Pagdato said.

“Pacucoa announces the exemplary status of our school in the Philippines and in the world!”

Mister Erik Madera, John B. Lacson Foundati on Mariti me University – Arevalo (Jblfmu-A) Quality Assurance Offi cer proudly announced as the university grasped its Level 4 Re-accreditati on status from The Philippine Associati on of Colleges and Universiti es Commission on Accreditati on (Pacucoa).

The audit was made from August 17 - 18 by the team headed by Dr. Jaime Buzar and composed of Capt. Renato Palomo, Ms. Maribel Estepa, Dr. Alejandro Ballador Jr. and Dr. Elisa Maligalig.

“The university will be benefi ted in the Pacucoa accreditati on. This accreditati on acti vity measures the current status of the university in terms of its services to its stakeholders and the performance of the graduates in the PRC examinati ons and

employability,” Mr. Madera added.“In this aspect,” Mr. Madera added.

“The university would see the important matt ers to be included in the strategic plan to obtain the requirements of the current scenario in the industry.”

Pacucoa is an agency that helps the educati onal insti tuti ons around the country for the realizati on of its vision and makes producti ve in pursuance of its mission, goals and objecti ves.

he present transiti on in the Mariti me Industry Authority (Marina) has caused mixed commoti ons. The turtle mariti me system Filipino seafarers got used to is now coming into a higher ground.

The kind that creates a pool of doubts and questi ons. The kind that aims to improve the mariti me industry.

With this eff ort of the government, how will it aff ect Filipino seafarers who consti tute two-thirds of the world’s seafaring populati on?

Republic Act (R.A.) No. 10635 establishes Marina as the single mariti me administrati on for the implementati on and enforcement of the 1978 Internati onal Conventi on on Standards of Training, Certi fi cati on, and Watchkeeping (STCW) for seafarers.

It will assume all the powers and functi ons of the Philippine Regulatory Commission (PRC), Commission on Higher Educati on (CHED), Technical Educati on and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Department of Health (DOH) and Nati onal Telecommunicati ons Commission (NTC).

validati on, verifi cati on, correcti on, revocati on or cancellati on of certi fi cates of competency (COCs), endorsement, profi ciency and documentary evidence required to all seafarers, and all such other matt ers.

The implementi ng rules and regulati ons (IRR) of R.A. 10635 must be issued within six months of its eff ecti vity. The IRR must be issued not later than September this year. If there are things that need to be reviewed, revised or fi nalized, the most is by December.

Marina and all other agencies concerned are expected to move together in coherence, to achieve swift and healthy transiti on.

Evidently, the government has been pursuant towards reforming the mariti me industry in the Philippines. The improvement on Marina will greatly benefi t Filipino seafarers. It will become a one-stop shop catering all our needs, but the transiti on may be too swift to handle.

papel’ or ‘sipsip’ in the administrati on.He should give everyone equal rights

and privileges and off er no room for being biased and discriminati on just because the student is not under his radar or good side. He should not tell interested and willing (not menti oning talented and trained) individuals (especially students) ‘I hope you understand’ he is not ‘close’ or not at par with the students’ adviser.

In our insti tuti on, the rott en fruit should be thrown out. Person(s) who pretend to have the insti tuti on’s best interest at heart (which is not actually his real goal) should be fi red because he is wasti ng the money that the insti tuti on is paying him-money that should be put into use for hiring a bett er coordinator, with the insti tuti on’s best interest at heart (for real).

But the most important thing is, the person whose only goal is to ‘mapalapad papel and mapa-sipsip’ to the administrati on should be kicked out so that he would not contaminate and corrupt the good values insti lled by the insti tuti on.

Through (and only by) this, our insti tuti on is ensured that it is really producing world-class, professional and globally competi ti ve seafarers.

to climb the ladder of this school. I climbed this far. It is not a very good view to stare at. It is someti mes sickening to think of these people. Somehow, for unknown reasons, I am starti ng to adapt their behavior. But there is stopping to it.

We’ve got some serious clean up to do. We have to rebuild those friendships we have compromised for selfi sh gains. We have to restore our human dignity and spit that self-damaging pride. Aft erall, if we lose our integrity and swallow our ideals and principles, then who will we be at the end of the day? I am afraid, we will become people we will no longer recognize.

The society might have taken concrete measures to rehabilitate Yolanda’s damages but the aft ermath goes creeping under the cracks of Captain John B. Lacson’s bust. I am uncertain when it will end. Maybe when the next Yolanda comes. I am afraid, maybe not.

oordinati on is one of the most important factors that aff ect the stability of an organizati on or an insti tuti on. Being a coordinator is one great responsibility. You have to balance your emoti ons so as to show your professionalism in dealing with your work.

An organizati on or insti tuti on could not exist without coordinati on, and no organizati on or insti tuti on is without a coordinator.

The role coordinators play in our university could create a dramati c impact on the lives of the students. Furthermore, a coordinator should respect boundaries. We understand that every coordinator has their own fi eld of experti se. One should not overstep his boundaries. He should be a model for respect, professionalism and leadership.

As a coordinator, it is your responsibility

to coordinate not only with the students but with your fellow coordinators in order to achieve a healthy working environment. It is also necessary so that you could make a fi t learning environment for the students that look up to you. However, some coordinator(s) do not take their real work seriously.

Having him is like having a rott en fruit in our insti tuti on. He will conti nue to contaminate the minds and acti ons as well as the values of the Lacsonian youth. Having him around will destroy what our founder has insti lled. He will destroy those around him.

A good coordinator should think of his subordinates’ welfare. He should not think about increasing his stature or social standing within the school. He should not show or administer what we would call ‘mapalapad

ndeed, Yolanda is a name to remember. The chaos it brought to Western Visayas was beyond our expectati ons. Major rehabilitati ons have been made by the goverment and Non-Governmental Organizati ons (NGOs) but her eff ects are sti ll deeply felt, unconsciously.

The devastati on triggered Filipinos’ creati vity in surviving. Indeed, it was a test of ti me. But some Lacsonians learned from it the other way around --- the kind which needs acknowledgement and improvement.

Due to hunger and extreme scarcity, Filipinos looted relief goods. Some Lacsonians act this way.

Due to hunger of power of others and discipline they impose, we learn to be creati ve on how to evade punishments. Yes, we someti mes hide ourselves behind offi ces and lock out. We are like rugrats sneaking on a peep hole just to make sure that our next move will not be deadly.

On Yolanda’s aft ermath, some individuals claimed the credits. They were Supermen who saved the world.

Seemingly, some of them entered our portals. They keep on making miracles and show off their magic powers. There are a few

who are amazed but others see the loopholes behind the tricks. Beware Superman, somebody might be secretly putti ng Kryptonite under your very light chair.

The other thing which was not ti mely during the typhoon was the hoarding of goods. Politi cs got in the way.

Unfortunately, the practi ce went on in this insti tuti on. Politi cs got in the way. If you are near the laddle, most probably, your stomach will be full. For some opportuniti es are kept. Check on the stocks, some might be rott en already.

Since it is politi cs, there is a necessity to build allies. Thus, the creati on of Justi ce League. They run the world and get the system running. The one you thought your friend might be someone else’s intelligence. This ti me, to trust is the hardest thing to do.

Indeed, three years is more than enough

It’s bett er to wear 6 inch heels sa tuwing umuulan.

We aim to promote Quality, Safety, Health and Environment pa naman.

no ka, Agila? Siling nila ang mga taga-John B mga John Gay? ”
