QUICK HITS »

» The Golden Eagles open Sooner Athletic play by welcoming fellow undefeated Southwestern A.G. to Bill George Arena as one team will leave with a loss, and probably in high-scoring fashion, as the teams both average over 80 points per game.

» While John Brown is 4-10 against SAGU since the Lions joined the SAC in 2013-14, the Golden Eagles won the last matchup handily, 94-69, in last season’s SAC tournament quarterfinals inside Bill George Arena en route to an appearance in the 2019 tournament championship game.

» JBU’s starters have powered the Golden Eagles to its hot start - ac-counting for 72 percent of the squad’s scoring, led by sophomore Luke Harper’s start to the 2019 season. After averaging 5.9 points per game last season, the guard has scored over 20 points four times in JBU’s first six games, averaging a team-leading 18.0 points per game.

» Despite playing a pair of NCCAA opponents, the Lions enter tonight’s contest averaging nearly 100 points per game, led by returning All-SAC second team selection Nykolas Mason’s 19.3 points per game. While both teams shoot the ball over 50 percent, SAGU enters tonight’s con-test hitting a blistering 54.3 percent of its attempts from the floor.

Page 6: JBUATHLETICS.com @JBUATHLETICS programs/bas… · 12 Mitchell McMullen 5-9 Sr. G San Antonio, Texas / MidAmerica Nazarene Univ. 13 Terrance Hubby 6-5 Sr. F Mansfield, Texas / Lamar

What a year we had in 2018-19 and we are ready to see what 2019-20 brings our way as we continue to work, serve and lead with our student-athletes.

We are so thankful for the accomplishments over the last year. It was a year of suc-cess on the court/field, in the classroom, in community service projects and in individual student-athlete’s lives. Our men’s basketball team, women’s soccer team and two cross country runners (sophomore Ben Martin and freshman Allika Pearson) represented us well at the NAIA National Championships, with women’s soccer finishing in the Round of 16. Our teams competed very well during conference play – finishing in the top half, and falling just short of a regular season and a tournament title in men’s basketball and in women’s soccer! Our men’s tennis team had a banner year and we had the privilege of hosting the SAC/RRAC regional tournament over in Broken Arrow, Okla., with the men and women both winning first-round matches.

The academic awards are at an all-time high. I could not be prouder of the performance in the classroom by our student-athletes, as well as the leadership the coaches are provid-ing in this area. The athletic department finished the school year with a 3.33 cumulative grade point average – the highest since we began tracking 16 years ago! Sixty-three (63) student-athletes were named to the SAC All-Academic Team, while 92 were named to the SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll! All nine of our intercollegiate programs were honored with the NAIA’s Scholar-Team designation and four programs paced all other SAC insti-tutions with the top GPA’s – men’s basketball, volleyball and men’s and women’s cross country! We also had 28 students named NAIA Scholar Athletes – juniors and seniors with at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA!

I couldn’t ask for a more service-minded group. Our women’s basketball team continued work with the local non-profit Ability Tree, while women’s soccer traveled to Colcord (Okla.) Public Schools weekly to work with the Hornets of Character after-school program. Our men’s soccer team led the annual Siloam Springs Fútbol Club clinics in April – once again, spending time with close to 200 local kids. Our men’s basketball team volunteered at Northside Elementary once a week during the fall semester – giving time to those precious kindergartners, while also helping out a local widow with home projects. Our cheer team volunteered hours with the Boys and Girls Club, Ability Tree and participated in Serve Siloam. And we continued our collection of food for the Manna Center at the annual Toilet Paper Game and provided 2,000 rolls of toilet paper to them as well!

The mission of the Golden Eagle Booster Club is to give support to all of the JBU intercollegiate programs. We want our campus, local community, and all alumni to be proud of being a supporter of John Brown University Athletics.

My hope is that you will partner with us during the 2019-20 academic year and assist with our continuing needs.

Sincerely,

Robyn DaughertyDirector of Athletics

QUICK HITS »

» The Golden Eagles will look to end its first four-game losing skid since the 2015-16 season by welcoming Southwestern A.G. to Bill George Arena in the teams’ respective Sooner Athletic openers.

» Both teams absorbed big losses to No. 6 Our Lady of the Lake (Texas), but SAGU’s two wins on the season came only against Texas A&M-Texarkana, while the Golden Eagles raced out to a 2-0 start to the 2019-20 season before getting hit by the injury/illness bug that has underlined the current skid.

» Freshman Tarrah Stephens has carried the scoring load so far for John Brown, as the Wyandotte, Okla. native has pieced together six-straight double-digit scoring efforts to begin her collegiate career. She poured in a career-high 19 points in JBU’s loss at Evangel (Mo.). Also the squad’s rebounding leader, Stephens averages seven boards per contest, nearly one-quarter coming on the offensive glass.

» The nation’s leading scorer will participate in this contest as the SAGU offense goes through senior Lexi Rich to the tune of 23.8 points per game, accounting for 32 percent of the Lions’ scoring per night. An All-SAC first team pick last season, Rich is a perfect perfect 17-of-17 from the stripe on the season.
