The Jasper County Veterans Memorial Commission will be constructing two new veterans’ memorials which will be

placed on the courthouse lawn. The first will serve as a memo-rial to all Jasper County vets and will be placed on the east side of

the courthouse. It will be a ten ton stone on a 15x15 pedestal and will be painted with military themed murals. The second memorial will be located on the south side of the courthouse next to the current veteran’s memorial. It will hold over 350 bricks engraved with names in honor or memory of local veterans. Any Jasper County veteran who lived in the county when they joined, lives in the county currently, or is now serving active duty is eligible to have their name placed on a brick. A copy of your DD214 or honorable discharge papers will be required along with your application. The bricks will cost $100.00 each. The bricks will hold three lines with 15 letters/spaces on each line.

(Inclusion in this project does not automatically qualify participants as veterans as defined under Iowa Code chapter 35)

Applications will be accepted until 4pm on November 8th, 2013. Due to the logistics of the process, no applications will be accepted after that.

We plan to unveil the new monuments on July 4th, 2014.

Please email [email protected] orcall Doug Bishop at 641-417-8885 with questions.

Please send completed applications along with payment and a copy of your DD214 or Honorable discharge papers to:

The World Wide Web of Opportunity

(NAPSA)-One of the most important learning tools for students is broadband Internet at home. With it, students can tackle almost any assignment. Beyond benefits to education, the Internet offers a world of opportunity to the entire family, bringing quick and easy access to an endless variety of resources that make health care, job searches, saving money and staying in touch with friends or family as simple as the click of a mouse. For instance, with the Internet at home, you have the ability to: • Search and Apply for Jobs Online-Whether writing a résumé, learning interview skills, networking or finding and applying for a job, the Internet can be crucial for the job search. Check

out sites such as CareerBuilder.com, Indeed.com and LinkedIn.com. • Access Health Care Information-With the Internet, you can search for quality medical care nearby, read reviews of health care professionals, keep track of your insurance coverage and monitor your health progress on sites such as http://health.yahoo.net and WebMD.com. • Find Educational Resources-Not only is the Internet a place to research and write homework assignments, it also offers students of any age the opportunity to explore everything from the GED test and colleges to getting student aid and finding a scholarship. Try CollegeSource.org, InfoPlease.com and CK12.org. • Explore Financial

Literacy and Support-Getting a credit card, creating a budget, finding tax help, retirement planning or learning helpful tips on managing money-the Inter_net, and sites such as MyMoney.gov and Mint.com, can help you get a better understanding of it all. • Stay Connected-E-mail is a quick way to send and receive messages. You can also choose to get bills and bank statements electronically, instead of through the mail. • Use Social Media-For most, social media is a way for family and friends to stay in touch. It’s also a way to find new recipes or learn parenting tips. Popular sites include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and Skype. Unfortunately,

not everyone has broadband Internet service at home. Many low-income families struggle to afford it, while others simply don’t understand the benefits the Internet can provide. In fact, in many low-income neighborhoods, broadband adoption rates are only around 15 to 20 percent, while in upper income communities, broadband penetration rates are as high as 90 percent. With 30 percent of the U.S. still without broadband Internet service at home, far too many continue to miss out on all the terrific resources the Internet can deliver. To help bridge this digital divide in

America, programs such as Comcast’s Internet Essentials have been developed. Offering families with at least one child eligible for the National School Lunch Program in-home Internet for less than $10 a month; computers for less than $150; and free digital literacy training online, in print or in person, it’s the largest and most comprehensive broadband adoption program in the country. In less than two years, Internet Essentials has connected 220,000 families-approximately 900,000 low-income Americans-to the power of the Internet.

Speeds for customers are now up to 5 Mbps downstream and up to 1 Mbps upstream. The enrollment process has also been streamlined with instant approval eligibility available to more schools. To take advantage of this program, call (855) 846-8376 or visit www.InternetEssentials.com or www.InternetBasico.com. Additional resources, Internet safety information, how-to websites and instructional videos on how the Internet can benefit students and families can be found at http://learning.internetessentials.com.

Tips On Saving Water In Style(NAPSA)-Any time of year can be the right time to look for ways to conserve water. The good news is that water-saving strategies can benefit both the environment and your wallet. To help, here are some tips. • A good place to start is turning off the water while you are brushing your teeth, shaving, washing your hands, doing dishes, or any other tasks where you usually let the water run. • Use a bucket to catch the cold water that comes out of the faucet or shower while you are waiting for the

hot water to heat up. You can put the water you captured to use watering your plants or pouring it into your toilet reservoir. • Installing low-flow shower-heads and fau-cets can be a low-tech, low-maintenance way to save water. • Check your plumb-ing for leaks, espe-cially leaking toilets and faucets. Fix anything you find leaking. A silent toilet leak could waste from 30 to 500 gallons every day. • Install faucets designed to save wa-ter. For example, the German manufacturer Blanco is known for

finely crafted sinks and faucets that offer what it calls “liveable style.”Said Tim Maicher, an executive with the com-pany, “When we say liveable style, we are referencing style that leads trends while inte-grating into any kitchen design.” According to Maicher, the company engineers faucets to last, use less water and be as easy to use as they are to maintain. He added that faucets must be both attractive and be able to withstand more abuse that any other fixture in a kitchen. Two recent water-saving faucets from the company are the Blanco Grace II and the Blanco

Alta Compact. They save 20 percent more water over standard-flow faucets because of their 1.8-gallon-per-minute flow rate. The Blanco Grace II is available in pull-out and pull-down designs with a dual-spray feature for both the culinary and traditional enthusiast. The Blanco Alta Com-pact also has the dual-spray feature and was designed with compact sinks and work areas in mind. To learn more, visit www.blancoamerica.com.

(NAPSA)—Increas-ingly, consumers want their portable comput-ers to be thinner, sleek-er and lighter weight. They also expect their computer to respond when they tap, swipe and touch its screen. No longer a nov-elty, touch has rapidly become the primary way many consumers interact with their lap-tops, tablets and other mobile devices. In the past, laptop computer screens used plastic as a cover material. Now, in order to support this touch-enabled world, note-books are adopting sleek, glass covers that provide better touch capabilities, as they do for your smartphone. +Unfortunately, with touch comes the

increased potential for the glass to scratch or break. Even careful interaction with these notebook devices can result in scratched cover glass and an unhappy user. As many people know, replacing a screen can be expen-sive and sometimes cost as much as half of the full notebook price. Plus, the repair process can leave the user without a device for days, even weeks. The good news is that a familiar name in the world of glass innovation—Corning—has addressed these issues by developing a glass solution spe-cifically designed for touch screen note-books. Called Corn-ing® Gorilla® Glass

NBT™, it’s designed to be tough enough to handle the surface pressures intrinsic to these devices and thin enough to enable ac-curate touch respons-es by the device. In fact, Gorilla Glass is already used by 33 major brands on over 1,000 product models and 1.5 billion devices worldwide. It is clear that device makers now take the proper-ties of the glass into

account when design-ing a device. The glass is chemi-cally strengthened through an ion ex-change process that creates a deep com-pression layer on the surface of the glass substrate. This layer acts as “armor” to help reduce the introduction of flaws. The result is the cost-effective, dam-age-resistant solution that consumers have

come to expect from the leading maker of cover glass solu-tions for smartphones, tablets, notebooks and other devices. While Gorilla Glass was de signed with touch screens in mind, the glass has also been used in a num-ber of large-format applications, such as digital signage and glass markerboards. It’s believed that future applications are likely

to include architecture, appliances, automotive and beyond. To see the glass in action, visit http://www.corninggoril-laglass. com/NBT-In-Action. To learn more, visit http:// www.corning-gorillaglass.com/ NBT-Info.
