JULIA HYMEN AND ALEX REEDER, WOLK CHILDREN’S CENTER (August)Julia and Alex lead a fantastic weekly music time in the lobby. It’s wonderful to see all the children singing and enjoying themselves, often accompanied by parents and members who dropped by. We’re lucky to have two very talented musicians running this special community program.

JOY GETNICK, JEWISH PROGRAM DIRECTOR (September)This past summer Joy took 35 teens to Israel for five weeks. Joy planned the program from start to finish, and took care of the teens as if they were her own. Joy is to be commended for instilling the next generation with a strong sense of pride in Israel and in Judaism.

BRIAN DENGLER, ASSISTANT FITNESS DIRECTOR, FWR (October)Brian did a fantastic job repairing our racquetball courts. He learned how to repair the courts himself, and created an internal plan for future maintenance. Thanks to Brian’s cost and time-saving efforts our members are better able to enjoy the game in our revitalized facility. Kudos to Brian!

KUDOS to the JCC Employees of the Month!

Where can you find 150 infants, toddlers and

preschoolers singing, swaying and dancing to music? At the JCC!

This rhythm filled event takes place each Friday at 10am, the children from the JCC Wolk Children’s Center enjoy a Shabbat Sing-A-Long led by a variety of talented Music Specialists.

It all started when Director Jill Shellman envisioned the children coming together to sing and dance at least one morning per week during Wolk’s summer program. She and Assistant Director Tracy Ashline selected Wednesdays for their camp-style sing-a-longs, led by August Employees of the Month Julia Hyman and Alex Reeder, who were instrumental in weaving weekly themes into the music. When summer ended, “we thought it would be really nice to gather during the fall to celebrate Shabbat,” Shellman says.

Each week, the children sing everything from “Bim Bom” to Jewish holiday classics—and even a song about making chicken soup, during which the youngsters come up with their own ingredients to add to the pot. Feedback from parents, grandparents, staff, members, and passersby is always as positive as can be.

“It allows everyone to feel like they’re a part of the family,” Ashline says. “Everybody leaves with a good feeling.”

“It’s very important for us to share the work of Wolk with members who don’t know much about us or don’t have young children,” Shellman adds. “We want them to know what a rich early learning experience our kids are receiving.”

The professional and dedicated teachers enjoy watching their former students sing songs originally taught in their classrooms. Just picturing a room filled with little ones clapping their hands, moving to the rhythm, and pretending to play guitar alongside the newest Music Specialist Ruth Aranov, Shellman asks, “How could it not put a big smile on people’s faces and warm their hearts?”

To see him, you’d never guess that Hy Kreitzman is 90 years old, and he credits this to his regular workouts at the JCC. Hy is one of those members who seems to have always been around the J. In fact, his relationship with the JCC goes back more than 25 years. “Physically, emotionally and

mentally, you can’t help but benefit from a JCC membership,” Hy explains.“It’s what keeps me going,” Kreitzman says. It’s extended my life and good health.” The first sign you get of Hy’s demeanor starts with his handshake- strong and firmer than most! His six workouts each week alternate between water aerobics and fitness. You’ll see Hy swimming laps, walking the track (“My joints can’t take running anymore”), stretching and flexing his muscles, or working out on a treadmill. Hy also takes advantage of the Cultural Arts offered at the JCC. He attends CenterStage performances, as well as the JCC Lane Dworkin Jewish Book Festival and the Ames Amzalak Rochester Jewish Film Festival. His decades of positive experiences at the JCC led Hy to say

“The staff are so friendly, professional, and helpful. The camaraderie that one finds in and around the facility makes it a very pleasant environment to be in.” Outside the JCC, Hy is a retired Court Stenographer, but the most interesting parts of his life revolved around the 8 week “vacations” Hy took every summer when courts were shut down. He says he travels “as an anthropologist,” learning as much as he can about the culture and people of each country he visits, and those are numerous. He has travelled throughout Scandanavia, Greece, Turkey and Russia. Hy has made two trips to Israel,

and other trips to Brazil, Mexico, and even tiny Lichtenstein. He has visited nearly every western European country, often interpreting for others due to his undergraduate degree in German.Hy is in such great shape that you’ll likely see an article about him as a JCC centenarian in 10 years! Supportive members like Hy are what make the JCC such a special place.

“The staff are so friendly, professional, and helpful.”

Tu B’Shevat, the new year or “birthday” of the trees, began as an agricultural tax day. Yet after the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C.E., Tu B’Shevat changed. Without a Temple to which to give agricultural tithes, Tu B’Shevat became a broader celebration of trees and fruit. In the Middle Ages, the Kabbalist mystics in Tzfat began observing Tu B’Shevat through a special seder featuring the “seven species” mentioned in Deuteronomy 8:7-9: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olive (oil), and date (honey). Like a Passover seder, the Tu B’Shevat seder features four cups of wine, each representing different ideas about nature, seasons, and Kabbalistic philosophy about how a person can get closer to God. For many centuries, Tu B’Shevat was not widely celebrated. Following the establishment of the Jewish National Fund in 1901 – an organization dedicated to rebuilding Jewish life on ancient soil – Jews again celebrated this traditional birthday of the trees by planting new forests in biblical Israel. Most recently Tu B’Shevat has been re-popularized as a day to celebrate Jewish environmental values, and our obligation to care about the natural world in which we live. For more resources and information on Tu B’Shevat please visit Jewish Life at
