AQUATICS SPOTLIGHT: CHARLIE, LIZZIE & MADDIE

Sisters Charlie, Lizzie and Maddie have taken swim lessons at the JCC since they were six months old. “They’ve always loved their swim instructors and the attention they get during lessons," says mom Tonia.

Big sister Maddie, 7, is on the Sea Serpents Swim Team. “She loves it all,” Tonia says. “Doing the Butterfl y, diving, swimming down into the deep end, all the games.”

Tonia appreciates the way JCC swim instructors really get to know each child. “They’ve always adjusted their approach for each child to help with their comfort in the water and progression of learning to swim. II also like that the lessons and swim team are made to be fun, while still having a focus on improvement. I’d recommend swimming at the JCC to anyone.”

Rachel Perrella has been a JCC member for more than 15 years. “I originally joined to give my kids a place to go, especially in the summer, and then I started taking fi tness classes. I was thrilled when DancEnergy came to the JCC. Right now my favorite classes are DancEnergy, conditioning classes and Spinning. I can only come early in the morning because I work. I like the variety of classes I can take even at that early hour.”

Rachel appreciates the expertise of the fi tness staff. “They are all quited skilled at what they do. They’re professional, personable and they make the classes fun and interesting. I always feel safe in their hands – they teach in a way that challenges you, but they don’t force you to risk injuries.”

We’re proud to be named Marblehead’s BEST Preschool this year by the Readers Choice Awards! Experience the JCC’s renowned Early Childhood Program.

Infant/Toddler Program offers care for children ages 2 months to 2 years and 9 months, from 7:30am-6:00pm, Monday through Friday, year-round. Your baby will grow with our nurturing caregivers who create an environment fi lled with wonder and curiosity. We encourage language development with daily reading and singing. Toddlers also enjoy Music & Movement classes as part of the weekly curriculum.

PrimeTime for Toddlers welcomes children 15 months to 2 years and 9 months, 8:30am-12:00pm, 2, 3 or 5 mornings a week, September through June. We offer a summer session, too!

Preschool welcomes children ages 2 years and 9 months to 5 years old. The program runs 8:30am-12:00pm, from September to June. Our experienced teachers and small class sizes set us apart. The classrooms are arranged in a series of learning centers that encourage both social interaction and independence. Gym and Music classes are part of the curriculum.

Masoret Program In addition to offering our strong Preschool curriculum, the Masoret Program features a special emphasis on Jewish culture and the Hebrew language. Masoret welcomes 4 and 5 year olds.

Transition is designed for the oldest 4 year olds who either miss the Kindergarten cut-off (5 years old by December 1st) or may benefi t from one more year in a kindergarten readiness classroom. The children participate in work groups, introducing them to concepts and activities that they will see in kindergarten.

Preschool Enrichment Programs Every afternoon, our teachers bring children to these wonderful classes, including Swimming, Drama, Tae Kwon Do, Sports, Cooking and more. These classes are open to all preschoolers.

Preschool Plus For families who would like additional care, Preschool Plus runs from 12:00pm-6:00pm daily. We also offer Early Drop-Off 7:30am-8:30am.

If you’re looking for after-school care for your older children, be sure to check out our popular program J Adventure, which welcomes students in grades K-8. See pg. 7.

JCC Preschooler Andrew Wetmore made headlines when he and his mom started a drive to collect blankets for the homeless. “I want everyone to be warm, just like I am,” said Andrew. “It makes my heart happy to help others.”

Mom Jill Simmons Wetmore says Andrew has learned a lot about helping people and doing good deeds from his preschool teachers here at the JCC. His classroom delivers food to the Family Table Food Pantry in Marblehead and even helps stock the shelves! “We talk a lot about Tikkun Olam, or repairing the world,” says Early Childhood Director Stephanie Walsh. “It’s wonderful that children are bringing that message home and into the community.”

April Vacation CampStaying local this spring break? JCC Early Childhood is running an April Vacation Camp for preschool-aged children. New to JCCNS Early Childhood? No problem. Come see all we have to offer your kids! Contact Early Childhood Dir. Stephanie Walsh [email protected] or 781-476-9882. Care is available 8:00am-6:00pm each day with minimal enrollment required.

Technology & Kids

Technology is everywhere today and our children are exposed to TV, computers, iPads and iPhones at a very young age. Our challenge as parents is to help our kids benefi t from high-tech tools while making sure they have plenty of time for interactive play, hands-on-activities and gross motor learning. Time with technology needs to be monitored and limited, but here are some pros to letting your kids go high-tech…

1. Teaches cause & effect: Young children love when they can touch a screen and it sings or reacts to them. They can learn colors, letters and more.

2. Helps develop fine motor skills: Learning to navigate a mouse can get toddler hands moving and support eye-hand coordination.

3. It’s a learning tool - There are many apps that teach and entertain. As your children grow, they can research almost any topic and get specific details to learn more.

4. It’s interactive – High-tech devices can teach children to explore and problem solve.

Our children live in an increasingly technological world and they will need high-tech skills. Many experts believe kids who are computer-savvy early on are better prepared for school.

Brad York has been a J member since his preschool days at the old JCC in Lynn. Now, he works out here six days a week, is on the Board of Directors and is leading a revival of Adult Programming.

“The JCC is a unique place for our community to come together to learn and grow,” Brad said. “We know there’s a great appetite from our adult members to hear interesting speakers on a full range of both Jewish and community-wide topics and our programs are always open to everyone.”

Brad is looking forward to a compelling spring line-up of speakers and events, including the North Shore International Jewish Film Festival this May.
