L’Shanah Tovah! With the New Year upon us, a lot is also new at the J. Our staffand lay committees have worked diligently to give you more innovative, excitingand interesting programming at all three of our branches.

At the Kaplan Branch in West Palm Beach, we’ve dramatically expanded AdultProgramming offerings. Several lecture series, and an array of classes, brunches, trips, and more are on the schedule. We are also introducing the Center forContemporary Jewish Women, featuring social events, Shabbat dinners, gather-ings for Friday night Shabbat services at our community’s synagogues, work-shops and more. We are very excited to announce that the JCC has partnered

with City Ballet to open a dance studio—called, what else, City Ballet at the J—tooffer a comprehensive dance program, featuring ballet, tap, and jazz for chil-dren of all ages, and we’re opening anew kosher eatery: Cafe J, which willhave extended hours Sunday-Friday, aswell as catering and take-out options.

We’ve enhanced our no-school holidaybreak programs in Boynton and WestPalm Beach. We’re calling them CampShalom Days because when school isout, camp is back! That meansimproved programming, theme days, special events, and more fun. We’redoing the same with our Chaverim after-care program.

Our Recreation & Wellness Dept. hasnew offerings at our Kaplan andHochman branches such as Karate for

All Ages, Tae Kwon-Do, flag football leagues for youth and adults, a Pee-Wee foot-ball program, and numerous new fitness classes. Our Parenting Center, whichserves all three branches, has added many new programs including, Shabbat &Share Mommy & Me, Prenatal Yoga, Mommy & Baby Yoga, a Fall Harvest ShalomBaby event, and a Body Image Conference.

Our Hochman Branch in Boynton Beach is introducing many exciting specialevents this season including an Adult Fashion Show, Havdallah in the Park andMother-Daughter Tea at the Ritz, and a new Lunch and Learn Adult Educationseries. Our Wellington Branch is bursting with new programs. If you live in thatarea, please stop in and ask about our offerings. They include After-schoolEnrichment Classes such as Sculpturing & More Clay, Kindermusik, Cardio Kids,Jewelry Making, and Piano Lessons. Adult activities include lectures, Canasta, and Cardio Kickboxing.

We’ve got a full calendar of cultural and performing arts events, including ourannual Book Festival Luncheons in Boynton and West Palm, and the Palm BeachJewish Film Festival, featured in this issue. There’s plenty more; just look throughthis issue of the Insider. I also extend a great big “Mazel Tov!” to our 12-memberJCC Maccabi Games Delegation. The Sharks recently returned from Akron, Ohiowhere they won silver and bronze medals in tennis and golf and came up onepoint short for a bronze medal in basketball. That’s incredible considering thebasketball team was competing for the first time.

All of us at the JCC join in wishing our members, families and friends a sweet, healthy, and joyous Shanah Tovah.

See you at the J!

Book Festival Luncheons tofeature two funny guys and a former female governorMadeleine Kunin keynotes Boynton Luncheon,Alan Zweibel and Stephen Fried form doublebill in West Palm Beach.

he book titles and covers immediately clue you in: any life lessons, observations and secrets that Alan Zweibel and Stephen Fried mayshare at the Annual JCC Book Festival Luncheon on Nov. 19 at theKravis Center in West Palm Beach will be related through humor.

Zweibel’s latest book is called, Clothing Optional: And Other Waysto Read These Stories. The cover’s most prominent component isthe backside of a (seemingly euphoric) leaping naked man, (his

bare tushy covered by a blue dot). Fried’s tome is titled Husbandry: Sex, Love &Dirty Laundry—Inside the Minds of Married Men. The book cover features thatgreat symbol of primal male macho-hood: a pair of orphaned white athletic sockstossed cavalierly on the floor.

So the humorous tone is obvious, even more so in Zweibel’s book with side-split-ting chapter titles such as My First Love: The Day I Got Caught Playing WithMyself In Hebrew School While Thinking About Abraham’s Wife Sarah—surely acandidate for Most Hilarious Book Chapter Title in literary history. The publish-er’s press release describes the book as being about “life, death, nudity, the OldTestament, finishing last in the New York City Marathon, suburbia, parenthood, and accidentally seeing his mother-in-law’s butt.”

The book is a hoot and even though Zweibel’s forte is comedy writing, he’s asfunny in front of an audience as well, recounting autobiographical tales of join-ing the original crew of Saturday Night Live as a writer (from 1975-1980), andachieving more TV glory co-creating and writing scripts for It’s Garry Shandling’sShow, the current HBO hit Curb Your Enthusiasm, and helping Billy Crystal writehis Tony-Award winning one-man Broadway hit, 700 Sundays. (con’t on page 9.)

(con’t from pg. 7) If you missed Zweibel when he appeared in WestPalm Beach (and in Boca Raton) during the 2005 Book Festival topromote his comic novel The Other Shulman, and children’s book,Our Tree Named Steve, here’s your second chance. (Much of TheOther Shulman, by the way, centers around being Jewish. “Thereare many flashbacks that have to do with ethical questions in theOld Testament, with (Shulman’s) immigrant grandparents, withHebrew school,” Zweibel said in 2005. “How much of a Jew he is,is examined in there.” The novel won the 2006 Thurber Prize forAmerican Humor.

In Husbandry, Fried, a two-time winner of the National MagazineAward, the highest honor in magazine journalism, has compiled 31of his most popular Ladies Home Journal columns. Those col-umn/chapter titles are as revealing as they are humorous: MenWho Diet and the Women Who Love Them, Love in the Time ofSnoring, and What Men Talk About When They’re Naked, amongothers. The collection, according to the publisher, “draws on 20years’ worth of his and his wife’s marital experiences, interviewswith other husbands, and countless studies on the science of rela-tionships to explain (or apologize for) the actions (and inactions)of married men…From the tortures of marital snoring to… landingthose dirty socks in the hamper—no subject is out of bounds…”

Fried is also the author of more serious fare, Thing of Beauty: TheTragedy of Supermodel Gia (which inspired the HBO film Gia),Bitter Pills: Inside the Hazardous World of Legal Drugs (which trig-gered an FDA investigation into antibiotic safety), and The NewRabbi: A Congregation Searches for Its Leader. He teaches atColumbia University School of Journalism.

Former three-term Vermont Governor Madeleine Kunin, keynotespeaker at the Book Luncheon hosted by JCC Hochman Branch inBoynton on Tuesday, Nov. 18, takes a more serious approach

about a serious—and during thiselection year—timely subject.Kunin was the first Jewishwoman to be elected governorof any state, and the firstwoman to be elected governorfor three terms. She was born inSwitzerland and came to theU.S. in 1940 when her familyfled Europe. She also served inthe Clinton Administration asDeputy Secretary of Education, and U.S. Ambassador toSwitzerland, where she played aprominent role in the return ofJewish banking assets toHolocaust survivors.

Her new book, Pearls, Politics, and Power: How Women CanWin and Lead is a self-described“political call to action forwomen to assume their rightfulplaces in the nation’s corridorsof power.” Through her ownexperience as well as stories ofwomen in power throughout theworld, Kunin provides a blue-print for how women can suc-ceed, and explains why womenmake a vital difference in gov-ernment and in the boardroom.

She wrote the book partly outof concern that not enoughwomen are entering politics. “Iwrote this book to pass thetorch on to the next generation

of women,” she has told the media. “When I was elected governorin 1984, I thought the floodgates had opened, but that turned outnot to be the case.”

With the historic candidacy of Sen. Hillary Clinton still relevant inthis election year, Kunin’s book couldn’t be timelier. (Kunin pointsout that nearly two dozen women have attempted to run forPresident since 1872, but Sen. Clinton is the first who had a realis-tic chance of winning.)

“It is time, she said, “for new political leadership to emerge fromthe women of America.”

Debby Gans believes the Liv Luv Program at theJCC‘s Rosenblatt Early Childhood Learning Centerworked a miracle with her son Benji. As a baby andtoddler, Benji cried constantly, exhibited fear and dis-like of others, and had serious speech problems. Now, at age 4, a year after entering the Liv LuvProgram, Benji is almost ready to join a mainstreampre-school class.

“Liv Luv is the best kept secret in Palm BeachCounty,” says Gans, who lives in Palm BeachGardens. “It amazes me nobody knows about it.They’ll love your child and help him or her to functionbetter in a typical environment. This is the only pre-school experience where Benji felt special ratherthan different. They’ve figured out a way to helpmost kids. With its process of mainstream inclusion,it is the ideal model for special needs programs,”adds Gans, who has a Masters Degree in EarlyChildhood Education from Columbia University.

"This program is the first of its kind in Palm BeachCounty and we are excited to be a part of it," saysCharlotte Fudge, Clinical Director for ButterflyEffects. “The first year of the program has beenincredibly successful, helping many students transi-tion to a regular classroom. We’re really excitedabout year number two!”

Two years ago, the JCC of the Greater Palm Beachesin partnership with Butterfly Effects, a cutting edgetherapy services provider, created the Liv LuvProgram—Liv Luv is Hebrew for ‘blossom’—to meet

the needs of children, ages 2-6, with special learningand social-emotional needs.

The non-denominational program gives children withAutism spectrum disorders, ADHD, and other learn-ing disabilities the opportunity to learn new skills andaddress behavioral concerns in an intense, smallclassroom setting while exposing them to daily activ-ities in a mainstream classroom.

The Liv Luv Program is unique and effectivebecause it combines the following segments:

An inclusion program that occurs in a small class-room setting within a mainstream school.

Enrollment that is based on a session system vers-es yearly one to continuously assess the student's

need for program placement.

A 1:2 teacher-to-student ratio for intensive instruc-tion and program individualization.

A Board Certified Behavioral Analyst™ who pre-pares individualized education and intervention

plans to address each child's needs.

Weekly consults by speech-language pathologistsand occupational therapists to address additional

language, pragmatic, motor, and sensory processingconcerns.

The Butterfly Effects Website allows parents tomonitor and participate in the child's progress

through observing classroom videos and readingdaily progress reports.

The Liv Luv Program is designed for children, agestwo to six, displaying a high frequency of social skillproblems and language delays, who are unable toattend mainstream classes without support.

For more information about the Liv Luv Program, call 561-736-4758.

Our 12-member JCC Maccabi Games Delegation deserves a round ofapplause for its accomplishments at the annual summer competi-tion which was held this year in San Diego, Detroit, and Akron, Ohio. The JCC Maccabi Games, are best described as a five-day Olympics-like competition for Jewish teens 13-16.

Our team, the Sharks, traveled to Akron joining thousands ofJewish teens from across the country and around the world for fivedays of athletic competition, socializing and ‘mitzvah doing.’

Team members Erica Friedman and Jessica Falk won Silver andBronze medals in tennis, Michael Haimowitz won Bronze in golf, andour basketball team missed claiming a Bronze medal by one point! Not bad, considering it was the first time the team had competed onthis level. In fact, the basketball team was so excited about their

potential, team members are already talking about competing inthe JCC Maccabi Games next summer. “It was a great experienceplaying against kids I’d never met before,” said Gabe Wendell, a 15-year-old from West Palm Beach. “We did much better than I thoughtwe would. We’re already talking about keeping the team togetherand going back.”

Aside from the competition, Wendel couldn’t say enough about thehospitality of his host family, who, among other things, took himand Michael Haimowitz to visit the Pro Football Hall of Fame innearby Canton. “Staying with that family, meeting new people, anddoing community service (cleaning up a public park), were all asmuch fun as playing ball,” Wendel said.

Last December, Opening Night audiences at the JCC18th Annual Palm Beach Jewish Film Festival saw theBritish coming-of-age comedy Sixty-Six. The rest ofPalm Beach County and other sections of the countrywere lucky to see the film nine months later in localtheatres. This is far from the first time a film selectedto be shown at the festival has gone on to nationalrelease and acclaim... The PBJFF Screening Committeeknows how to pick ‘em.

During the past few years alone, other films that werefirst screened at the festival and were later picked upfor national distribution include The Rape of Europa,The Ritchie Boys, The Year My Parents Went onVacation, Walk on Water, and Gloomy Sunday. Festivalaudiences saw these films monthsbefore the rest of the country. Thenagain, a lot of wonderful films shownat the festival don’t get that luckymass-distribution break. Miss the fes-tival and you miss marvelous filmssuch as The First Basket, a fascinatingdocumentary about the Jewish con-tribution to basketball in the U.S.

“Festival-goers ask me every yearabout where their friends here orelsewhere can see our films once the Festival ends. Itell them that the majority will be available only on theJewish film festival circuit,” says Karen Davis, directorof the PBJFF. “I encourage film lovers to become aFestival Passholder now, and have the chance to seeoutstanding international, independent, and Israelifilms before they open elsewhere, assuming they evenget distributed in the U.S.”

This year’s PBJFF runs from Dec. 3-14, 2008 at threetheatre locations in Wellington, Delray Beach and PalmBeach Gardens. The Festival will screen about threedozen films from around the world over 11 days.

One of the “buzz” films set to be shown this year is theIsraeli film, Waltz With Bashir, a full-length animateddocumentary about the first Lebanon War, received astanding ovation at the Cannes International Film

Festival. Another Israeli film, The Lemon Tree, a fea-ture that combines Israeli-Palestinian politics withwomen’s issues is also drawing attention.

If one of last year’s festival themes was the coming ofage of the Israeli film industry—almost one third of thefilms shown were from Israel—one of this year’s themesis the desire of directors and writers to tell stories ofSephardic Jews from North Africa.

“This year there are several films about North AfricanJewry, and we’re showing the best of them,” Davissays. Included are, Father’s Footsteps, about TunisianJews in France, which was nominated for an “IsraeliOscar” for Best Feature Film. Where Is Moise?, is a fea-

ture film about the exodus of Jewsfrom Morocco to Israel. And VillaJasmin is a documentary about theexperiences of Libyan Jews duringWorld War Two. “It’s from Tunisiandirector Ferid Boughedir whose pre-vious film, Summer in La Goulette, was very popular with our festivalaudience,” Davis says, adding “I’dlove to have Palm Beach CountyJews whose families came fromMorocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya or

elsewhere see these films and learn more about wheretheir parents and grandparents came from and whatthey went through.”

As usual, there’s something for everyone. This year’sline-up also includes two bar/bat mitzvot films—ElBrindis from Chile and Hey! Hey Esther Blueberger, from Australia, and a sports documentary, Holy LandHardball, about the formation of a pro baseball leaguein Israel.

A complete description of all films, the film schedule, and information about purchasing Festival Passes orindividual tickets will be available on the PBJFF website, palmbeachjewishfilm.org, in early October.

How many of us can define ourselves so confidently and concise-ly? How many of us so love what we do professionally that itbecomes part of our DNA? Meet Bonnie Altman, who has beenteaching at the JCC Rosenblatt Early Childhood Learning Centerfor so long (nearly 25 years) that her joy and commitment toinstilling a love and understanding of Judaism into young Jewishminds is part of the fabric of the place.

Altman is the 2008 recipient of The Grinspoon-SteinhardtAwards for Excellence in Jewish Education. The award includes a$1,500 “professional development stipend” from The HaroldGrinspoon Foundation and the Steinhardt Foundation for JewishLife and an all-expense paid trip to a special Awards Seminar inNew York, October 27-29, 2008. The award also includes $1,000from the local Friedman Commission forJewish Education.

The quality of the teachers at the JCC pre-schools is so high that this is the secondtime in three years a Rosenblatt teacherhas won it. Veronica Maravankin, now thepre-school director, won the prestigious national award in 2006.It’s not far-fetched to think the award could find its way backhere next year. All the pre-school teachers have BA degrees, many have Masters degrees, (including Altman) and six recentlycompleted special training at Harvard University.

“Bonnie believes that education is not just the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire and instilling in students not just infor-mation, but a love of learning,” Maravankin says. “When youenter Miss Bonnie’s class you find children engaged, playing, dis-

covering, thinking, discussing, investi-gating, creating, manipulating, and rea-soning. What is most unique aboutBonnie and one of the main reasons shedeserved to win this award is her owndesire to learn—from her children, hersupervisors, her co-workers as well asfrom educators.”

“I’m committed to the idea that all mychildren feel the pride I feel in beingJewish,” says Altman, a mother of four, who refers to her students as “her chil-dren.” Observing her in action, it’s obvi-ous she cares about her students andtreats them as if they are family, exhibit-ing patience and encouragement andjust enough firmness to let them knowwho’s captain of the classroom.

If her students are like her children, thenthe pre-school is an extension of herhome. “I’m woven into the JCC becauseI’m committed so much to the values ofJudaism,” explains Altman, who hasbeen a JCC pre-school teacher since1985. “I have a love of Judaism, and theJCC is a place where I can do Jewishthings and teach children the responsi-bility of taking care of the world.”

“I have always emphasized the mitzvot(obligations) of tzedukah (justice/chari-ty) and tikkun olam (repairing theworld). I believe that part of my job is toempower young children and help themunderstand that being Jewish meansyou must take an active role in tikkunolam. In my classroom children areencouraged to use their strengths, be

thinkers, take responsibility for their social interactions, andhonor each other’s individual differences.”

Altman graduated from Brooklyn College of CUNY in 1969 with aBachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education, and laterearned a Masters Degree in Education from Rider College (nowRider University) in New Jersey. She was raised in an Orthodoxhousehold in Brooklyn, attended religious school until she was 12,and regularly participated in Shabbat youth services into herteens. She became discouraged at having to sit in the balconyapart from her father and two brothers in synagogue.

She married in 1968, but tragedy struck in 1982 when her hus-band was killed in a private plane accident. Altman was pregnant

with her fourth child. She moved her familyto Florida, joining the reform congregationof Temple Israel. She calls Temple Israel’sretired Rabbi Howard Shapiro “a wonderfulspiritual leader for my boys.” At age 42, shejoined an adult education class learningHebrew for services that led to study for a

group B’nai Mitzvah Service. “I read from the Torah for the firsttime when I was 42 years old,” Altman says proudly.

Altman’s love of learning and of Judaism has never waned.Financially, I should have left the J and taken a job with the PublicSchools,” she says, “but I would have missed the weeklyShabbats and the sharing of holidays with the children. “I wouldhave missed the opportunity to have an impact on the Jewishidentity of many children over the years. I will stay in JewishEducation until I retire. After that, I want to teach teachers.”
