Dear Members,

As we move into our fall season with an exciting menu of JCC programs, I would like to person-ally welcome two new departmental staff members to our JCC team. Tim Lauffenburger is our new Director of Adult Services & Community Resources. Tim is from Buffalo, NY and joins our team in order to continue to provide services to our active and senior adults. Aaron Brooks is our new Director of Youth Services and Recreation. Aaron comes straight to us from the Jewish community of Cleveland, OH. Aaron will be working with our BBYO teens, and our children and pre-teen programs. They replace two outstanding staff members, Lisa Berardelli & Ashley Sny-der, who leave our programs in stronger shape than they found them.

In 1931, the YMHA of Scranton (now known as the JCC) formulated and began running a summer day camp pro-gram at its facility on Wyoming Avenue. In 1953, thanks to the generosity of Jacob Fink, the JCC Day Camp moved outdoors for the first time as it was given use of a tract of land at Chapman Lake. It began a truly grand summer for more than 200 campers enrolled. In 1962, the JCC of Scranton acquired land in the Poconos in rural Daleville, PA, and began a project over five years to build new summer camp facilities. The 101-acre Daleville camp site opened its doors in the summer of 1965 with over 300 campers. Long-time and current JCC member Dan Ginsberg served as its first Director. In 2005, the campsite was sold to new owners with the condition that the JCC could continue to run its day camp on the property in perpetuity.

Through all the transition, the JCC summer camp has always remained a magical place. It touches the lives of chil-dren in many ways. The JCC is indeed, fortunate to have so many engaged and enthusiastic members, volunteers and staff who help create a place for children unlike any other - a place where anyone, regardless of faith, social or economic background, can take advantage of all the benefits the JCC day camp has to offer. The summer of 2011 was special for JCC Camp Daleville as it engaged almost 200 campers. There were many highlights this past sum-mer which included a wide range of sports and activities including Israeli dancing and a visit from the Israeli Scouts Friendship Caravan. Additionally, this summer we saw the success of our first program for children with special needs. Sunshine Connections, a program for children with autism, brought tears of joy to several families who saw a significant growth in their child’s social and recreational skills.

The JCC of Scranton has just completed its 80th summer in providing camping services, and is proud to be provid-ing one of Northeast PA’s ultimate summer day camp experiences. This past summer was also the 46th anniver-sary of operating our summer day camp program at the Daleville property. JCC Camp Daleville continues to serve an average of 200 campers a summer. In four years, we look forward to celebrating a milestone as we reach the 50th anniversary of JCC Camp Daleville! Additionally, JCC Camp Daleville is now online; check out our new camp website at www.campdaleville.org!

From all of us here at the JCC of Scranton, we appreciate your continued support, and want to make your JCC ex-perience the best it can be. With the Jewish high holy days around the corner, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you L’Shana Tovah Tikatevu! May you be inscribed for a good new year!

Sincerely,

Daniel J. Cardonick

He has been a Program Officer and Social Work Intern for the United Way of Broome County, NY where he advocated for seniors and developed program-ming to support their mission. Additionally, he has worked as a Group Facili-tator and Aide for the Children’s Home of Wyoming Conference, an organiza-tion devoted to providing support, supervision and assistance in academic and personal growth capacities to individuals as well as direct counseling for chil-dren and their families. Tim is also a Certified Chef, having graduated from the Natural Gourmet Cookery School. Tim replaces Lisa Berardelli, and we are excited to have him work with our senior adults and continue our “Activage” programs for active adults.

He was responsi-ble for planning programs/events for Jewish college students at 11 campuses across the greater Cleveland area. Additionally, Aaron is a devoted BBYO alum, and for the past year has served as the Advisor for one of the Cleveland Chapters of BBYO where he worked with Jewish teens on leadership development, teamwork, event planning and recruit-ment. He is brand new to Scranton, and is excited about being in our community to help build our youth programs here at the JCC. Aaron is also a diehard Cleveland Indians fan.

Sept. 26th 12:45 - Film: Barney’s Version This seriocomic adaptation of Mordecai Richler's award-winning

1997 novel stars Paul Giamatti as Barney Panofsky, who meets the great love of his life, Miriam (Rosamund Pike), at the most inoppor-tune time imaginable: his marriage to his sec-ond wife (Minnie Driver), a wealthy Jewish princess and compulsive shopper. Narrated by Barney as a confessional, the film covers 30 years of his unusual journey -- from his first marriage to the chronically unfaithful free spirit Clara (Rachelle Lefevre) and their life in Italy together, through his third marriage to

Miriam, with whom he has two children. Standing in the wings is Barney's father, Izzy (Dustin Hoffman), who continues to stick by him as his loyal right-hand man. Through it all, Barney experi-ences numerous highs and lows, but manages to consistently surprise everyone with unforeseen acts of altruism and kindness that turn him into the quintessential modern hero. Rated R 2hr.12 min.
