OPEN HOUSE

Voted the Region’s #1 Health Club and Silver Medal Winner for Summer Camp!

When you think of Summer Camp there are probably

many images and feelings that come to mind.

Friendships that have lasted a lifetime. That sense of

pride and spirit after winning a Color War challenge.

Learning skills and taking on new adventures. Maybe

even perfecting that cannon ball into the pool on a

hot day! Summer Camp means being part of a special

community, a family.

At Summer at the J Camps, we offer all of that and

more… right here close to home on our beautiful 11-acre

campus with Outdoor & Indoor Pools, Tennis & Basketball

Courts, Playing Fields, Dance Studios, and Art Rooms.

This year, the sweet magic of PrimeTime Summer and

KinderCamp are back, promising days of wonder and

whimsy.

For the older kids, we’re introducing cool new changes,

combining our award-winning camps for children

entering grades 1-6 into one camp, Simchah Classic. To

meet each camper’s needs, we’ll divide Simchah Classic

into Lower and Upper age groups.

All Simchah Classic campers will experience Electives

(formerly Specialties) like Dance, Tennis, Painting etc.

with professional instructors. They’ll also enjoy daily

Enrichments of Arts & Crafts and Sports & Games. The

upshot: Your children will love our traditional camp

atmosphere while learning new skills, making friends and

creating memories.

Simchah Travel Camp is back with Youth Director

Ashley Corcoran joining the team, leading kids on day

and overnight trips to Martha’s Vineyard, the White

Mountains and more! Jewish Teen Internship provides

innovative leadership training and community service

trips. Our Inclusion Program ensures that campers

with special needs are fully integrated into camp, with

support from trained professionals.

So please explore our Summer at the J Camp Guide and

take advantage of all we have to offer your children, from

toddlers to teens.

We look forward to seeing you at camp!

Everyone's Welcome!

Come to the Open House and enter a raffle to win a FREE week of camp!

PRIMETIME SUMMER

Blaine DeRosa followed in his siblings’ footsteps and

absolutely loved coming to PrimeTime Summer. “He liked the wide variety of activities - he was always so excited to come and see what puzzles and blocks Mary Ellen and Anita had put out for the day,” says mom, Audrey. “He loved going outside

and playing in the sandbox and, most of all, having fun

splashing in the water table.”

Audrey appreciates what a perfect fit PrimeTime

Summer is for the littlest campers. “It’s perfectly

tailored for the needs and developmental ability of this toddler age group.

They aren’t ready to be in KinderCamp, but they aren’t

babies anymore, either!”

Blaine’s older sister, Jules, and brother, Grant, both

loved PrimeTime Summer and now attend KinderCamp and Simchah Classic. “There’s such a tremendous energy on

the Hill during the summer. The children can see it and it makes them happy and enthusiastic about camp.”

Ari Kepnes came home every day after

KinderCamp last summer and regaled mom, Cara,

with stories. “He would tell me about fun games he

played on the field and in the pool. He came home with wonderful arts and

crafts projects and would sing songs he learned

at music. As a parent, it made me happy to see him

happy - and it made me even happier that all of this took place within a Jewish

environment.”

Cara, who lives in Peabody, has her own amazing memories of JCCNS

Summer Camp. “I attended Camp Simchah starting in 1985 when I was five. I attended every year until I became a counselor. I made the best friends

at camp and still keep in touch with them today. I wanted Ari to have the

same childhood experience that he can hold with him forever and that’s exactly

what he’s getting.”

wonderful and valuable experiences that kids will remember for a lifetime.”

During the school year, Heather works as a JCCNS preschool teacher, but she counts the days ‘til camp

every year.

“KinderCamp is such an incredible place for children to spend a summer - safe and enriching, fun and full of spirit. I love watching

kids’ excited faces as they make new friends and

experience new things.”

Grace and Riley Murtaugh, both 11, started at JCCNS Camps because their big

brother, Jake, worked here and raved about it. “He

always told us about the campers and all the fun stuff

they did,” says mom, Jill. The sisters fell in love with camp, just like Jake. “They

loved all the counselors and activities, especially Tennis

and Robotics.”

JCCNS Summer Camps are great for parents, too, says Jill. “I felt comfortable with

my kids at the JCC – there is always open communication

with counselors and directors. The counselors all seemed happy when I

dropped off the kids in the morning. They looked happy

at the end of the day, too, and that says a lot. I would definitely recommend the

camp to others.”

Camp at the JCCNS. “I look forward to sharing my love for dance with the campers,” she

says.

Christina has been dancing for 35 years and teaching for 18

years. She is an award-winning choreographer, too.

“I love teaching the campers the fundamentals of dance and watching their confidence grow. We all have a blast putting on

the big performance at the end of camp.”

Professional actress and teacher Tracy Bowermaster is leading Drama Camp again this year, after a hugely

successful summer in 2015. “Honestly, I love the excitement that the kids showed for Drama Camp. Everyone was open to the new experience of learning acting games and putting

themselves out there, which is really cool. My campers LOVED drama.

“This summer, we’ll be doing improv and singing and dancing and maybe some commercials! I’m excited for it to

Kylie Munroe, 11, had a blast at Travel Camp, says mom, Mary Ellen. “Her days were filled with non-stop adventure and fun. Her favorite trip

was the overnight at Adventure Bound in Maine. She loved the ropes course and white water

rafting.”

Travel Camp is a great way to give kids a little independence, Mary Ellen says. “As a mom, I felt that it was an opportunity for Kylie to experience some overnights

with friends, which strengthened her sense of confidence.” Kylie

attended Travel Camp for seven weeks!

JCCNS Youth Director Ashley Corcoran and Teacher/Adventurer Eric Burke are teaming up to lead

Simchah Travel Camp this summer.

“We’re so excited to provide a second summer of Simchah Travel Camp,” they said. “We’ve been planning these trips for months and cannot wait to get on the road with our campers.”

Eric has years of experience leading kids and teens on enriching trips around New England. Kids loved him at Simchah Travel Camp last summer.

Ashley - who runs the J’s after-school program, J Adventure - says watching kids take on new challenges and succeed is her favorite part of being Youth Director. “I’m most excited to provide new and memorable travel experiences for campers.”

INCLUSION PROGRAMat the at the j j

Inspiring, magical moments and connections happen every day at the Special

Needs Inclusion Program at Summer at the J. Our specially-trained staff works

with children with special needs to integrate them into KinderCamp, Simchah

Classic and JTI programs. The Inclusion Program also hires teens and young adults

with special needs to work at JCCNS camps.

“At Summer at the J, we recognize differences, but we build upon likenesses. We

allow friendships to form through side-by-side participation,” says Inclusion Dir.

Melissa Caplan. “Inclusion at the JCCNS provides meaningful involvement and

equal access to all of our campers.”

The J’s Inclusion Program currently serves campers coping with Autism Spectrum

Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Blindness, Chromosomal and Seizure disorders, ADHD,

and Intellectual Impairments.

For more information about the Special Needs Inclusion Program, please contact

Dir. Melissa Caplan at [email protected]. Registration involves a meeting with

families.

The JCCNS runs adaptive programs throughout the year for children and young

adults with special needs. For more information, contact Ashley Corcoran

[email protected] or 781-476-9907.

SPECIAL NEEDS INCLUSION PROGRAM AT SUMMER AT THE J

Ian Solberg, 9, had an incredible experience at the J’s Inclusion

Program and is coming back again this summer. “We need summer programs that find ways to fully include our children with special

needs,” says dad, Scott. “The JCC shows that it can be done and

when it is done well it has a lasting impact on the youth they serve.

Talent, commitment, and most of all, love- those are the ingredients

we found at the JCC.”

Ian quickly bonded with his counselor and loved going swimming every day. “The

flexibility of the swim instructors was remarkable as they found

ways to include him as a model for other students. This enabled Ian to demonstrate his swimming skills in ways he never had before,” Scott

added.

“We came quickly to trust that (Inclusion Director) Melissa Caplan

had the knowledge and skills needed to insure that Ian would be safe, loved, and supported in a way

that he could be fully included.”

GRADES 9-10

Do you want to have an exciting summer

with other teens? Are you hoping to

develop your leadership skills and

build your college resume? Then look

no further! The Jewish Teen Internship

program will give you valuable

leadership training and communication

skills, while you intern with Summer at

the J camp staff and spend time with

friends.

In this unique internship, teens can

choose their track, including Marketing,

Photography, Nutrition or Special

Needs programming. JTIs participate in

community service projects around the

North Shore, with the guidance of North

Shore Teen Initiative.

JTIs also enjoy fun trips, including

paddle boarding and white water rafting!

The JTI program runs in two-week

sessions throughout the summer. Teens

may register for as many sessions as

they like, but are required to make a

minimum two-week commitment. The

sessions for JTI are:

Session 1 June 27- July 8

Session 2 July 11 - July 22

Session 3 July 25 - August 5

Session 4 August 8 - August 19

Hannah Kotz spent two summers as a Jewish Teen

Intern and says the leadership skills she learned will be

valuable as she moves toward college and a career.

Kotz especially liked the JTI community service trips…

stocking food pantries, working with adults with

special needs and more. “I think learning new ways of interacting and leading was probably one of my favorite

parts of being a JTI,” she said.

Hannah participated in a Marketing Track at JTI, working in the J’s PR/

Marketing office, taking photos and posting to social media. “These skills are not

only useful in camp, but also in other jobs I might pursue in the future.” Hannah is coming

back to Summer at the J in June – as a counselor!
