JDC West is the largest student run business competition in Western Canada. It is a three day event that showcases academic competitions, athletic challenges, a social competition and a charity initiative. Over 550 students from 11 of Western Canada’s top Universities unite annually to compete in this competition that is solely organized by and for business students.

TheThe theme of JDC West 2011 is Going Against The Grain. All aspects of this year’s competition will have the theme woven throughout, whether it be involved in a case or a social competition or the athletic component. Going Against The Grain represents the pursuit of greatness by defying the status quo, whether through innovation or determination. The heart of entrepreneurism and business is encompassed with the theme, and as the competition is to be held in a rapidly advancing Saskatchewan, this competition has the ability to produce the future business leaders for the province, country, and entire globe. JDC West 2011 will encourage students to go beyond the nobeyond the norm and formulate business plans that stretch the boundaries of our imagination.

ACADEMICSAA team of three students will represent their respective universi-ties by competing in one of ten academic case study competi-tions; accounting, business strategy, entrepreneurship, finance, human resource management, international business, man-agement information systems, marketing, not for profit business strategy, and taxation. Students begin the morning in isolation and then are transferred to resolution, where they resolve a business case using only their knowledge and the information provided in the case package. After three hours in which the case is read, analyzed, solved, and prepared into a presenta-tion, the students will showcase their solution to a panel of three to four judges for twenty minutes.

ATHLETICSThe 2011 sport events at JDC West will consist of two sports; water basketball and ultimate Frisbee. A seven player team from each university will compete in a weekend long tourna-ment designed to showcase some of the best athletes that Western Canada’s undergraduate business schools have to offer. The events will be played on campus in the PAC (physical activity complex) – a three year old, top-of-the-line athletic facilitfacility. Students in the athletic component of the competition always demonstrate phenomenal spirit, determination and intensity.

SOCIALThe most gruelling and intense competition of the weekend is the social competition. JDC (Jeux de Commerce) was founded on the social competition, and the competition has flourished from this starting point. The endurance and spirit of the teams are put to the test as they meet challenges much like in Fear Factor, The Amazing Race and Survivor. This year, ten events will test the endurance, spirit, skill, athleticism, and teamwork of eacheach and every social competitor. The theme for these events will be Pioneering Across the Prairies, and it shall encompass the spirit and history of the prairies.

DEBATEJDCJDC West Debate is based on the parliamentary style of debate found in the Canadian House of Commons. Teams composed of four students are ambiguously assigned a topic and a side to represent – side government or side opposition – and are then expected to formulate a plan over the next thirty minutes, using no outside sources. Students in this area of the competition have to have the broadest knowledge bases in additionaddition to finely tuned speaking skills. The debate competition always draws some of the largest crowds and promises to provide a lot of excitement all weekend long.

CHARITYJDC West participants have raised over $600,000 for their local community charities since the competition’s inception in 2006. Each year every school hosts an event called “Chillin’ For Charity,” in which each team raises money by jumping into a freezing cold pool of water in November. In addition, JDC West encourages teams to get involved in their communities and volunteer as much as possible. Winning the charity com-ponentponent earns the utmost respect and admiration from all of the competitors, faculty, business and local residents. In 2009, the Edwards School of Business team raised over $61,000.

PARTICIPATIONThe coveted participation award is imparted upon the team that exemplifies the core spirit values of JDC West; empower-ment, connectivity, professionalism, and energy. The participa-tion award is given to the school who maximizes their JDC West experience from the moment they arrive in Saskatoon. The team that wins this award is the friendliest, most spirited and most admired team at JDC West.

SCHOOL OF THE YEARThe ultimate goal for every team that attends JDC West is to win the School of the Year Award. Every hour put in to case studies, debates, athletic training, coaching, studying, cheering, raising money, learning, strategizing, and coaching all goes into winning this award. At the end of the gala, the ultimate pinnacle of the night’s excitement, 5050 students from one school will celebrate one of their greatest treasures earned in the entirety of their university career.
