1.5 Touch2 Control Certifier40G consists of two identical devices for dual-ended certification testing. An included label may be placed at the bottom of the unit to distinguish the local and remote unit. Both the devices include LCD displays and touch screens with identical look and feel. This allows you to start and save test results, and view results from either ends of the test.

1.6 Certifier40G Adapters All Certifier40G test adapters plug into the adapter slot at the top of the local and remote units. Certifier40G automatically detects any adapters connected to it and configures its interface to the matching parameters and limits.

1.7 Permanent Link Adapters and Channel Adapters

The standard Certifier40G test kit (NGC-4500-FA-xx) includes adapters for testing copper cabling in both Permanent Link and Channel Link configurations. Permanent Link adapters connect to the customer’s wall plate and telecommunications panel jacks. Certifier40G software compensates for the adapter’s transmission characteristics so they do not affect test results. Certifier40G uses a revolutionary scheme of testing permanent link configurations that provide highly accurate and repeatable measurements. Since permanent link measurements are highly influenced by the performance of the RJ-45 jack and the link cord, the wear and tear of the cord contributes adversely to the accuracy of measurements. In traditional certification equipment where the permanent link adapter is tethered to the permanent link cable, any degradation in the cord requires the replacement of the

Page 12: JDSU Certifier40G Cable Certification Tester Getting Started 6 1.2 Certifier40G at a Glance Item Functionality Power On-Off Button Used to turn on or turn off the device. Touch once

12

permanent link adapters often to remain complaint to certification standards. To overcome this problem the Permanent Link Adapters Certifier40G includes a high precision Permanent interface adapter and a Permanent link cord shown in the figure below. If ware and tear on the cable degrades performance, the cable can be cost effectively replaced without replacing the complete permanent link adapter.

Channel link tests require the use of the customer’s equipment (patch cords) for performing certification. Channel adapters connect to the customer’s patch cords at the wall plate and telecommunications panel. Certifier40Gsoftware compensates for the adapter’s transmission characteristics so they do not affect test results.

1.8 Adapter Configuration Warnings Certifier40G displays a warning when it detects a potential conflict between the detected adapter and any of the test settings. Using an inappropriate adapter will significantly affect measurement accuracy. This is especially important for category 6A and 7 installations.

1.9 Cabling Certification and Tests Certification testing with Certifier40G is intuitive and simple. An autotest function coordinates a series of measurements between the local and remote devices and analyzes the results to determine if the cabling run passes or fails the selected standards.

CAUTION Never connect Certifier40G test adapters or test cables to a voltage source such as a telephone jack. Excessive voltages can damage Certifier40G adapters and the Certifier40G analyzer, and void your warranty.

1.10 Copper Cable Certification Testing Standards for structured twisted pair cabling require that both ends of each cable run are tested to find the worst case performance condition. All certification testing requires a two-part test set consisting of a main unit and a remote unit, each of which has similar test capabilities. One unit tests the cabling run from the telecommunications closet end and the other tests from the outlet end. There are two primary considerations when testing:

• Whether the user patch cords are included in the cabling run during the test. If so, channel test configuration is required. If not, a permanent link test configuration is required.

• Which standard should be used (Category or Class)?

1.11 Permanent Link Configuration Tests The permanent link configuration is used in facilities still under construction and does not include user patch cords. Because the link configuration does not include the two additional connections which the patch cords produce, performance standards are more stringent. The local and remote units attach to the link under test with the permanent link test adapters.

1.12 Channel Configuration Tests The channel configuration includes the user patch cords at both ends of the cable run. The pass/fail limits applied when testing are less stringent than for link configuration to allow for the performance degradation inherent in the two additional modular-8 connections. The local and remote

units attach to the channel under test with the channel adapters.

1.13 Certifier40G User Interface

1.13.1 Touch Screen Layout The touchscreen interface of the local and remote Certifier40G is segmented into three. The Information Segment is the row at the top of the screen and provides Device Information, Device Name, Talk Set Status, Storage and Battery information. The Functionality Segment is below the information segment. This allows the user to execute various functions on the device. The Navigation tabs in the Functionality Segment logically partition the user screens into test items, system items and informational items.
