I am Sophia and I’m a 4th year student at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. I’m originally from Apple Valley, Minnesota but it didn’t take long for me to become a huge Packer fan after moving to River Falls. I’ve always been highly passionate about wellness so 4 years ago I decided to major in Exercise and Sport Science and minor in Health Education. To this day, my passion for wellness continues to grow and I am constantly amazed by the things I’ve learned.

In order to gain experience prior to graduation I needed to find an internship. At first, I was unable to find anything that seemed like a good match for me, but then I found The Centre! I love that my responsibilities as an intern here include work that is entirely relevant to what I want to do in the future instead of getting coffee for people or cleaning up messes like you often see in the movies. Although, I’d still be willing to do that for the incredible staff here.

My internship began in February and I will be here until the end of May. I’ve been creating 2 programs that will be offered in the near future; the first is the SPRING Into Action-Wellness Challenge and the second is the Goal Getter Wellness Coach Experience. Creating these programs has been both challenging and fun so I can’t wait to see where they go. I’m also working on a spring-themed “Exercise of the Week” bulletin board, it’ll be the first bulletin board as you enter the fitness area hallway, be sure to check it out as it will also contain information for the programs I’ve been working on!

I hope that during my time at the Centre I can be as helpful to the staff as they have been to me. I’ve always been a very outgoing and hardworking person so I hope both of those traits come across in all of the work that I do here. I am already positive that the skills I have learned during my internship thus far will be carried into my distant future. I plan on graduating in December of 2015 and pursuing a career in worksite wellness. I don’t have a particular destination in mind but I am positive that everything the Centre staff has taught me will make an immense impact on my future.

3 Core Value Relationships We choose to share lives and believe that every member has a story. We are open to all.

RCU believes good saving habits begin at a young age. That’s why they started RCU School $ense. They opened their first elementary site in 1993 and since then they continue to add new schools every year.

Teach Children to Save Give your child the opportunity to develop great money management habits by opening a savings account and making a deposit each week at RCU School $ense. Students are rewarded for accumulated deposits, and there are drawings for prizes.

Raise Money for Schools RCU rewards the school for each deposit made. The school can use this money for whatever it needs. The more you save, the more you help your school!

Employ Students Each fall, students are hired to work at the school locations. Those interested complete an application and an interview. Once they are hired, they go through a training program to learn the computer system, confidentiality, Member service, marketing, and much more!

It’s Easy to Open an Account Help your child become a saver by opening an account and encouraging them to make regular deposits. Do not send money with the application as RCU will deposit the initial $5 to open the account!

4 Core Value Integrity We hold ourselves accountable to our members, community and each other.

Exercising Healthy

The Best Fitness Tracking Apps for Different Types of ExerciseSOURCE: http://lifehacker.com/the-best-fitness-tracking-apps-for-every-type-of-exerci-1482693352

Track Your Daily Steps Pedometers have been around for a long while and your smartphone is a great way to keep track of your daily steps since you probably always have it in your pocket. That said, the key to a good pedometer app is simplicity. While many apps can track your steps along with all kinds of other things, an app that just tracks steps saves on battery life. Our favorite pedometer is Runtastic Pedometer for both Android and the iPhone. It keeps track of all your daily steps, compiles that data into pretty graphs, and still manages to keep things simple. That said, for iPhone 5s owners, we like Pedometer++. Since it uses the iPhone motion sensor, it barely uses any of your battery life and it shows your daily step count right from the app’s badge on the home screen.

Track Your Runs You have a ton of options for different apps to track your runs, but one of the best is Runkeeper. The reason is pretty simple: it’s free, it tracks your GPS, allows you to create workouts, create routes, make your own music mixes, and just about anything else you’d want from a running app. Importantly, it’s also cross-platform, so if you jump ship from iPhone to Android (or vice versa), you can keep all the data you collect over the years. What’s nice about Runkeeper is that it does everything it needs to do without a lot of effort from you. If you want, you can simply turn the app on and then go for a run. But if you’d rather dig in and personalize things, Runkeeper allows you to do that. It also supports a ton of third-party accessories if you decide your smartphone isn’t enough.

Track Your Cycling Like tracking your runs, tracking your cycling is all about a solid GPS app that doesn’t kill your battery. For that, we like Strava. Strava works on Android and the iPhone, as well as a few different GPS devices. It’s also super simple, so it’s easy to use right away. Just launch the app, and you’ll start tracking your location. From there, you can go on a bike trip and Strava will log that data. When you’re done, you can look at where you’ve been, your average speed, and plenty more. What sets Strava apart from the rest of the options out there is the community. With Strava, you can set up a network of friends and challenge each of them to races. You’ll also find a ton of different public challenges with various routes, inclines, and more.

Track Your Sleep Sleep isn’t exactly exercise, but it’s just as important to keeping yourself healthy. You have a surprising amount of choices for technology that tracks your sleep patterns, but only a couple of apps actually work very well. Your best option for both Android and iPhone is Sleepbot. All you need to do is launch Sleepbot, place it on your bed, and fall asleep. In the morning, you’ll be treated with all kinds of data about your sleep habits, including your movement, a recording of any sounds you made (or that happened in the room), your sleep time, and more. You can then rate your sleep and add notes so that data actually means something to you. With all that data, you can then go on to use those graphs to figure out how to improve your sleep. iPhone users may also want to check out Sleep Cycle, but it’s not quite as feature-rich as Sleepbot.

Track Everything You Can Tracking your walking, cycling, and running is all great when you remember to actually do it, but if you’re just interested in collecting a bunch of that data, you’ll want something that tracks your activity in the background without you having to do a thing. For that, we like Moves. Moves works in the background on your Android or your iPhone. It’s always on, and tracks your steps as well as if you run or ride a bicycle anywhere. It automatically differentiates between a car ride or a bike ride, so you don’t have to do anything to make Moves work. It also tracks your location everywhere, so you can look back and see where you went, how you got there, and how long it took. Basically, Moves tracks everything. The downside is that Moves doesn’t give you a lot of data. So, while it tracks everything you do, you can’t see things like speed, heart rate, or other similar minute details that you’d find in a specialized app. That said, you can grab your data from Moves and import it elsewhere pretty easily. If Moves isn’t exactly what you’re looking for, the iPhone 5s-only app Nike+Move is similar, but also tracks your general movements throughout the day. Nike+Move also has a social element to it that pits you against your friends to chalk up the most activity, so if you’re the competitive type, it’s definitely worth a look. Likewise, ARGUS is an iPhone app that tracks motion, fitness, and sleep all in one app, but subsequently doesn’t have a ton of information outside a few simple graphs.

Brittanee ZemkeBY COLLEEN DAVIS

MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

Brittanee Zemke spends most of the work day teaching four and five year olds. She also works with our Camp Centre program and fills in with our GAP program when needed. Her positive attitude, flexibility, and energy make her an asset to the Centre and our childcare programs.

Brittanee has been teaching 4 and 5 year olds at the Centre since graduating from UM Duluth, from which she brings a degree in Early Childhood and Early Childhood Special Ed to the Centre. When asked what makes teaching at the Centre special she shared that “different areas are available to us and the kids like the pool and gym, which allows us to do things like 4K Fitness.” When I asked a couple of her students why “Miss Brittanee” is so special to them, I heard things like “she’s nice, she gives fun toys out, and she tells good stories”. It was clear that they all enjoy being in her class.

When not at work, Brittanee enjoys being outdoors, but mostly just during the summer. She mentioned hiking, biking, walking, and recreational activities as well as spending time with friends and family.

Listen To Your Heart SUBMITTED BY WESTFIELDS HOSPITAL & CLINIC

According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease is the leading global cause of death, accounting for 17.3 million deaths per year, a number that is expected to grow to more than 23.6 million by 2030. Here’s a story from a Westfields Hospital & Clinic patient that demonstrates the importance of listening to your heart.

This past fall, John Walsh began his day like every other, until he began to have pain in his chest. The very active 74-year old who spends his free time hiking, swimming and golfing acted quickly by calling Westfields Hospital & Clinic. They urged him to come in right away.

Upon arriving at the hospital, John underwent a consultation with Clifford Tenner, MD, Emergency Medicine, Westfields Hospital & Clinic. “We performed an EKG along with blood work,” said Dr. Tenner. “I recommended that John be transferred to Regions Hospital for a heart angiography.”

At Regions Hospital, John underwent more tests and was quickly prepped for surgery by the Regions cardiology team. During heart angiography, John had three stents placed in his blocked heart arteries.

After a two-day stay at Regions Hospital, John was able to go home to New Richmond where he followed up with Dr. Brechtken at Westfields Hospital & Clinic, and began cardiac rehabilitation.

“John is on an excellent medication regimen that can help reduce plaque from building up in his arteries,” said Dr. Brechtken. “Another important part of his long-term cardiovascular health is cardiac rehabilitation which will help him stay active.”

Since his heart attack, John has lost over ten pounds and is focusing on maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. “[I am] extremely grateful I have been given another block of time,” said John.

In short – remember to listen to your heart and take a few moments each day to take care of yourself. Your heart will thank you.

Put your health first! Join us on Saturday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the Westfields Hospital & Clinic Community Health Fair! The Health Fair will feature health information, free health screenings as well as fun events for the kids. Where: Westfields Hospital & Clinic | 535 Hospital Road, New Richmond WI, 54017

Centre Member Spotlight

Aidyn VoeltzBY LARISSA RUUD

YOUTH TEEN AND FAMILY MANAGER

Aidyn Voeltz has been a happy Centre member since June of 2010. Aidyn is currently 11 years old and in 6th grade here in New Richmond. In the last five years that Aidyn has been coming to the Centre, he has participated in a lot of different Centre activities. He has also enjoyed coming to the Centre to just hang out, swim and shoot hoops every so often with his friends. He explains that it’s fun to see his friends here where he can hang out with them, shoot hoops, and maybe jump rope a little bit. Aidyn has participated in many organized activities here at the Centre. He was involved in Youth Dodgeball League during the fall of 2014 and he began taking swim lessons in the Centre’s Swim School back when he was really little he says.

Aidyn regularly attends Teen and Tween events here at the Centre. He came to his first ever Tween Night a few years back and was hooked! Since then, he has missed very few Teen or Tween Nights! He enjoys these events because all of his friends come to them and they can have fun together, dance, play sports and video games, and just have a blast. Aidyn is also a big fan of the Up All Nights that happen a few times throughout the school year

here at the Centre. He loves being able to stay up all night long and do fun things. When asked what his favorite part of all nighters were here at the Centre, he replied with, “the dance parties for sure!” He then summed up his thoughts on the Centre in one word, which consisted of, “Awesome!”

Aidyn also stays very busy outside of the Centre playing football, golfing, watching movies, and playing with his dog. Aidyn likes golf so much that he is in a summer golf league. During the summer of 2013, he was an all-star golfer who got 3rd place in his age group, a very neat accomplishment! Here at the Centre, we’re glad that we’ve become part of Aidyn’s routine and love seeing him here whether it’s coming to Teen Night, swimming with friends, playing dodgeball, or just coming for an afternoon of shooting hoops.
