    P o p eFrancis has

published hisfirst Ency-clical letter onfaith: Lume n

Fidei . In hischaracteristic simplicity andhumility the Pontiff said that thisnew document The Light of Faith, released on June 29, 2013,four months after his election, ismeant to supplement what PopeBenedict XVI had written in hisencyclical letters on charity andhope. He further acknowledgeshis predecessors effort, saying:For this I am deeply grateful tohim, and as his brother in Christ Ihave taken up his fine work andadded a few con-tributions of myown. A media comment on this,

par aphras ing Ches ter ton was:What Benedict stored, Francisscatters!

There are some precious jewels of thoughts and reflections

that Pope Francis scatters, for usto pick up. In the opening

paragraph itself we read about thegreat gift that Jesus brought for us: the light of Faith. Pope Franciswrites: Those who believe, see;they see with a light that illuminestheir entire journey, for it comesfrom the risen Christ, the morningstar which never sets (n. 1).

In the history of the Churchwe come across some great saintsand luminaries who were throwninto deep darkness, stark tragedies and painful situations,

but come out through their firmfaith to an experience of a divinesplendor. And, they remain asgreat models for us, pilgrims in thesame lifes journey. Servant of God, Mother Eliswa, foundress of TOCD (Tertius Ordo Carmel-itarum Discalceatorum) and itsfirst Superior General, was onesuch pioneer. Her deep faithstrengthened her and her companions. Chief Editor: Ignatius Gonsalves

    1188 InSIw 5

It was in the last decade of the Nineteenth century that SwamiVivekananda called Kerala a Lunatic asylum. But within less thana century the whole world was talking about Kerala the role-model State. When Vivekananda visited Kerala in the 1890s, theState was steeped in social inequities and moral degradation.Caste hegemony lorded over everything in ridiculousdimension and the condition of women was pathetic. Eventhe mere sight of the so called untouchables or the outcasteHindus was considered sinful as it could pollute those of thehigher castes. Those poor folks were not allowed intotemples. Use of public roads and other public facilities such aswells and ponds were prohibited. Education secular or religious, was the monopoly right of higher castes. Knowledge is powerwas the obvious reason. Women too were kept off from formaleducation as patriarchy wanted them always powerless.

But Kerala has changed drastically, emerging as Gods OwnCountry in every sense. Though poor by the standards of per capita income, industrialization or agricultural production, Keralais now a socio-political and economic marvel, a subject of studyand research.

Keralas achievements in the quality of life is comparable tothe advanced countries of the world. Servant of God Mother Eliswas life and mission has made significant contributions to itdirectly and indirectly. It is indeed an important component of the Christian heritage of our land, Kerala in particular.

The foundation of Kerala renaissance was laid by the LatinCatholic mission that began to decisively impact this land fromthe 15 th century. Canons passed in the historic Synod of Diamper (1599) condemning the evils of casteism and decreeding equal

property rights for daughters, are heroic even by present daystandards. Even those who condemn this synod for their ownreasons, are unable to point out even a single canon that

unacceptable! The pre-Diamper Christians had a casual approach towards

marriage as it was the case in the medieval Kerala Society andthey did not consider matrimony as a sacrament. Many Christiansdid co-habit with concubines publicly. Child marriage and

polygamy were also widely practiced by them. The Synod of Diamper proclaimed matrimony a sacrament and stipulated that itshall be performed with utmost sanctity, in the presence of a

priest and in the church. The Synod asserted that nothing butdeath could dissolve the sacrament of matrimony.

The synod doctrine of the sacrament of marriage consistedof sixteen decrees. The Synod observed that a great number of Christians were married at nine or ten or even below and it decreed14 as the age for boys to get married. For girls it was at least 12years or attainment of puberty. Polygamy was very much in vogueamong Kerala Christians and it was observed that this was attimes done with the license of the Church. Parish priests were

urged to make a detailed enquiry and initiate measures of rectification. They were empowered even to seek help from theoffice of inquisition. The Synod decreed that every parish shouldmaintain a marriage register where the vicar had to record thenames of the bride and the groom with day, date month and year details. Names of two witnesses were also to be entered. It wasalso stipulated that these registers should be periodicallyinspected by prelates during pastoral visits.

Restoration of the sanctity of matrimony and thus that of thefamily was the launching pad of Keralas renaissance. The decreeagainst untouchability, and granting equal right to the girl childin the fathers property were instrumental in augmenting it. But itwas indeed a very slow process. Yet a steady and irreversibleone, gaining momentum in the Nineteenth century.

Kerala was blessed with several renaissance leaders in the Nineteenth century and all o f them have been impacted by andextensively borrowed from the Catholic legacy of the State,

beginning with the arrival of Latin missionaries and particularlythe great Synod of Diamper.Servant of God Mother Eliswa Vakayil (1832-1913), Keralas

first Christian woman sanyasini and the foundress of the firstwomens religious congregation was indeed a revol-utionary prophetess and a renaissance leader by every right. Shewas a unique fruition of the Catholic legacy of this land. The

An Unsung Heroine of Renaissancealso left pioneering and lasting contributions in the social, cultural and educational spheres of the State which her spiritualdaughters today have literally taken to the ends of the earth.

Renaissance and development are meaningless if womenare not empowered, their dignity recognized and honoured.Mother Eliswa is the first Christian woman pioneer of Keralasrenaissance and her life and mission have touched every sphereof women empowerment be it spiritual, educational or economic. Kerala is the only State in India where womenoutnumber men.

Consecrated life for women and education for girls weretwo path-breaking initiatives from Mother Eliswa. It is reportedthat during the Portuguese period (1498-1663) there was aconvent of Augustinian sisters. But they were not indigenousand disappeared during the fanatically Calvinistic Dutch regime.Even in the early part of the 20 th century women were consideredservile and incompetent. They were to be seen rather than heardwhen questions of religion were discussed. In the patriarchal

joi nt fam ily women were con sid ere d as pos ses sio ns of husbands rather than persons and members of the family. Oneof the interesting results of Indian Sociological studies is that,as the families improve, they demonstrate new economic andsocial status by withdrawing their womenfolk in the publicdomain. It is in this background one should evaluate the heroismof Mother Eliswa. Eliswa, it is testified that, even from her childhood she dared to express kindness to the so calleduntouchables working in her ancestral home, never missing achance in helping the poor and the needy.

In the Nineteenth century, there were schools andseminaries for boys in Kerala, but no such training centers for girls. She founded Keralas perhaps Indias, first convent schooland boarding house and orphanage for girls. The Vicar Apostolic of Verapoly, under whose spiritual care was entrustedthe entire Catholic community of the State and the neighbouringareas, irrespective of Rite, commissioned the TOCD sisters withthe responsibility of looking after the education of women, byan order dated July20, 1868. Arts, crafts, Maths, cooking, tailoring handicrafts, house management, language, meditation, catechism and music were taught systematically in the school.

A salient feature of Mother Eliswas mission is the family-focus and the emphasis on integral formation of girls. Teachinggirls and women rosary-making and other handicrafts pavedthe way for their economic empowerment and self respectenhancement. Those with intellectual honesty can never fail tosee here the seeds of Kudumba Shree and Jana Shree self-help projects that have now almost ensured the ordinaryMalayalee womens economic independence. Widowhoodwas widely considered a curse until recently. It should beremembered that Mother Eliswas grace-filled married life withVakayil Vareed lasted barely for four years. When she waswidowed she was the mother of a one and a half year old girl. How she transcended the limitations of widowhood is againworthy of a serious study.

Servant of God Mother Eliswas heroic and saintly life can be summar ized as St. Ignat ius Layola does his Spir itualExercises in four phases. Diformata reformare, Reformataconformare, Conformata confirmare, Confirmata transformare. That is: Reforming the deformed, Conforming the reformed,Confirming the conformed and Transforming the confirmed. Butsadly she is an unsung and at times un heard heroine of Keralarenaissance, a victim of inter rite politics, a victim of the rigidand selfish patriarchal mindset that transcends regions andreligions. In his Wednesday audience on April3,2013 when PopeFrancis underlined the fundamental lead role of women in theGospels, the patriarchal mindset of the world was visibly shaken.

It should be remembered that the anti-woman attitude was at its peak in the Nineteenth century Kerala and it continued till themiddle of the next century. No wonder, much of what Mother Eliswa did for the Church and the society have been blacked outand insensitively attributed to others. In this case men! Butultimately truth alone triumphs. The death centenary of Servantof God Mother Eliswa should enable us to ensure the triumph of

    (From page..1)spite of challenges andconstraints.

In Lumen Fidei in paragraph35, Pope Francis tells thetouching story of the Christmasmagi, who were led to Bethlehemby the star (cf. Mt 2:1-12), as thestar is a sign of Gods patiencewith our eyes which need to growaccustomed to his brightness.Religious man is a wayfarer; hemust be ready to let himself beled, to come out of himself and tofind the God of perpetualsurprises. This respect on Godspart for our human eyes showsus that when we draw near to God,our human lights are notdissolved in the immensity of hislight, as a star is engulfed by thedawn, but shine all the morebrightly the closer they approachthe primordial fire, like a mirrorwhich reflects light.

Mother Eliswa is a truewayfarer of faith. She was marriedat a tender age of just sixteen, butlost her beloved husband whenher little girl child was just oneand half years old. Going againstthe normal custom of remarriage, she decided to spend her time andenergy in the pursuit of faithdiscerning the plan God that wasin store for her. The papaldocument Lumen Fidei tells us:Once the flame of faith dies out,all other lights begin to dim. Thelight of faith is unique, since it iscapable of illuminating everyaspect of human existence Wecome to see that faith does notdwell in shadow and gloom; it isa light for our darkness (p. 4). Inthe same way, Mother Eliswa inorder to be liberated from theshadow and gloom tried to followfaithfully and be enslaved in thatlight. It is that light that Dante, inthe Divine Comedy, describes asa spark, which then becomes aburning flame and like a heavenlystar within me glimmers.

After she lost her husband in1851, Mother Eliswa encountereda new life of severe struggle. But,

for the next fifteen years sheconfronts her struggles byconstantly contemplating on thedivine plan and her unique destinyin the social milieu in which she

is. But in the moments of silenceand struggle, God speaks to her.Pope Francis gives the poignantexample of Abraham, our father infaith in Lumen Fidei: Somethingdisturbing takes place inAbrahams life: God speaks tohim; he reveals himself as a Godwho speaks and calls his name.Faith is linked to hearing. Abrahamdoes not see God, but hears hisvoice. Thus, faith takes on apersonal aspect (n. 8).

The encyclical gives the exampleof the great Gothic cathedrals. Ar-chitecturally in these gothic struc-tures light comes down fromheaven by passing through win-dows depicting the history of sal-vation. Gods light comes to usthrough the account of his self-revelation, and thus becomes ca-

pable of illuminating our passagethrough time (n. 12). MotherEliswa too experienced this con-soling light of faith from abovethrough her long hours of medita-tion and prayer at Kalapura inthe lonely barn house, even in thehub of anguish and afflictions 2. Inthe midst of suffering and pain, faith provides us with strength andcourage.

In Dostoevskys The Idiot ,Prince Myskin sees a painting byHans Holbein depicting Christdead in the tomb and says: Look-ing at that painting might causeone to lose his faith. The paint-ing is a gruesome portrayal of thedestructive effects of death onChrists body. Yet it is precisely incontemplating Jesus death thatfaith grows stronger and receives

a dazzling light. In the same way,Mother Eliswa, from her personaltragedy caused due to the sad de-

mise of her beloved husband, rather than losing her faith, shereceives a dazzling hope from thelight of faith through prayer andsilence.

Saint Augustine, commentingon the account of the woman suf-fering from hemorrhage whotouched Jesus and was cured(cf. Lk 8:45-46), says: To touchhim with our hearts: that is what itmeans to believe. Adapting SaintAugustines commentary, PopeFrancis explains further: Thecrowd presses in on Jesus, butthey do not reach him with thepersonal touch of faith, which ap-prehends the mystery that he isthe Son who reveals the Father.Only when we are configured toJesus do we receive the eyesneeded to see him (n. 31). Likethe suffering woman of the Gos-pel, Mother Eliswa touched theLord with her heart and began tobe configured herself to Christ. This helped her to travel on a new

path of total commitment througha life of consecration. This configuration to Christ that

Mother Eliswa experienced wasnot an individual, personal en-counter of faith, rather she tried tosee it in the context of the commu-nity around, considering particu-larly the evils and deprivations inthe social milieu in which she lived. The judicious support and pru-dent spiritual guidance she re-ceived from the Italian Carmelitemissionary, Fr. Leopold Beccaro,OCD and Blessed Kuriakose EliasChavara helped her to perceive anew dimension of her experienceof faith. The Vicar Apostolic of Verapoly, Archbishop BernadineBaccinelli gave it the ecclesiasti-cal approval and offered his bless-ings to her to start a religious life

in a community, which was truly afulfillment of his long cherisheddream.

Lumen Fidei beautifully explainsthe community dimension of theindividuals faith experience, as itsays: Faith is not simply an indi-vidual decision which takes place

in the depths of the believersheart, nor a completely private re-lationship between the I of thebeliever and the divine Thou, between an autonomous subjectand God. By its very nature, faithis open to the We of the Church;it always takes place within hercommunion We can respond inthe singular I believe onlybecause we are part of a greaterfellowship, only because we alsosay We believe (n.39). Christianfaith is truly lived in the context of a community in authentic fellow-ship of its members (n. 39).

Chapter four of Light of Fidei il-lustrates where this faith is livedout: in society and in the family.Pope Francis says, faith becomesa light capable of illumining all ourrelationships in society. With a

critique on the present day inter-pretation on the concept of equal-ity and fraternity, the Pontiff con-tinues: Modernity sought tobuild a universal brotherhoodbased on equality, yet we gradu-ally came to realize that this broth-erhood, lacking a reference to acommon Father as its ultimatefoundation, cannot endure. ThePope then concludes, We needto return to the true basis of broth-erhood (n. 54).

Pope Francis profoundly con-nects the aforementioned two as-pects of faith further to the re-sponse of the true believer to thesufferings of fellow human beingsin the society. How many menand women of faith have foundmediators of light in those whosuffer! So it was with Saint Francis

of Assisi and the leper, or withBlessed Mother Teresa of Calcuttaand her poor. They understood

the mystery at work in them. Indrawing near to the suffering, theywere certainly not able to eliminateall their pain or to explain everyevil. Faith is not a light which scat-ters all our darkness, but a lampwhich guides our steps in thenight and suffices for the journey(n. 57).

With these absorbing thoughtsfrom Lumen Fidei, let us now comeback to the reflection on the faithresponse of Mother Eliswa. In herquest for meaning for life, she re-alized the need to perceive thecommunity dimension of her faith. She understood that faith be-comes truly meaningful and aliveonly if it is confronted with the re-alities of the social milieu aroundand adequately responded withdeeds of charity and love. For herthe abject poverty of her people, pathetic plight of the widows, lack of proper education, especially of the women, and the dehumanizingsocial customs of her time wereserious concerns. The thatchedhouse or panambu-madom wherethey started their religious life onFebruary 13, 1866, slowly devel-oped into a thirteen-room convent, where one room was convertedinto a class room (the first con-vent school of the state!), anothera boarding house for girls(edukumdat ), etc. There the poorilliterate women were educated andempowered. In an era when womenwere forbidden to go to schools,Mother Eliswa was a pioneer tobring a social change througheducation. She became a mediatorof light! In darkness she lit a lampto show new steps for their jour-ney!

It was Seneca who said: If I donot burn, if you do not burn, howcan the shadows become light?

Servant of God, Mother Eliswaexperienced the light of faith deepwithin, and through her life triedto dispel the darkness around her.Truly she is a Mother who walkedin the Lumen f idei , and inspiresus to do the same.
