“In my role as training manager, I had multiple roles as most of us do these days. Part of my responsibility was the ongoing, daily management functions - similar to any other manager: budgeting, human resource management, administration, etc. However, each training program was absolutely a project. There was a beginning and an end, something unique was being created, and they had to be initiated, planned, executed, monitored and controlled, and eventually closed.
One thing I find very interesting as a PMP instructor is that most all of the concepts involved in Project Management are used in nearly every management role. We all plan what we're going to do, our team executes the daily activities, and as managers we monitor and control all aspects of the planning and execution. The only difference is that those ongoing activities aren't temporary.
So, I definitely feel that training managers apply all aspects of the PMP Principles, processes, and knowledge areas to their operational / functional activities in their role related to developing and administering specific training programs. But I believe that they also apply many of them in their ongoing, repetitive activities as managers also.”
