the deployment of defense systems that can protect aircra.
Aside from the electronic countermeasures that use onboarddefense systems, there is now also an increased emphasis on
aircrew training that includes the use of adapRve flight and
missionplanning,andtheuseofevasivemaneuvers.

TrafficPaernOperaRons-2dLtLucMoens-
Duringanengaging safety brief inthegeneralmeeRngof
June 16, 2011, Capt Joseph Friel talked about midair
collisions andhow toavoid them. Although the officialrecordsshowthattheirfrequencyhas heldrelaRvelysteady
atabout 10per year over the last decade, every aircrew
member shouldbe awareof thefactthatmore thanhalf
happen in the close vicinity ofanairport. Current alert
systems inairports aresRll insufficient,anditis alwaysgood
to remember that the heavy traffic essenRally requires
formaRon flying. Surprisingly, 54% of the cases involve
nose-to-tailcollisionsatslow-closurespeeds,incontrastto

which we dont follow that ideal image, and he
challengedeachofustoexamineourindividualthought
processes that, ideally, can help us make wise
decisions. Looking at the staRsRcs of past aircra
crashes,a commonthreadappearstobe thatthe pilots
didnt care to file FAA flight plans. This reflects
complacency, poor atude and no careful planning.
The lesson of Haps safety brief was clear: there are
threecomponentstoa flight thatdetermineits safety,
i.e.machine, environmentandtheperson. Ofthesethree, theperson is the most important
factor.Therefore,thinkprudentlyandflysafely!

JohnLindner,ownerofacompanycalledSafetyOnethat
is based in Sedalia, Colorado, was an invited guest
speaker for thesafetyeducaRonporRonof thegeneralmeeRng of 21 July, 2011. He specializes in outdoor
survival training and equipment, and presented our

basicprinciplesforpersonalsafetyandsurvivalskills one

and forests. It underscored the need for appropriate
emergency andsurvivalgear thateachaircrewmember
must becarry insidetheplane. Johnemphasizedthe
need for training with such gear before going in the
wilderness, because during emergencies in those hosRle environments it becomes very
challengingfora personto remaincalmenoughtoreadmanuals onhowtousethe survivalgear. Duringthosemoments, panic canbe thebiggest enemy as it can quickly overwhelm
logicalthinking,therebyhamperinganyeffortstoescape fromthehosRlecondiRons. Instead,
maintaininga posiRvemental atude, andamoRvaRngteamspirit if severalindividualsare
involved,cansavelives.
Theprinciplesforsurvivalthatarerelevanttoanyaircrewmembercanbesummedupinthe

Staying hydrated also slows down hypothermia, and John recommended carrying an
