Industrial Activities Conducted - Summary

• Process Improvement (1995-2005) – Part of the first wave of Lean Six Sigma Black Belts chosen for training in Lean Six Sigma principles. The goal of the corporate initiative was to improve processes for a $1.6 billion corporation (MTG-RBC). 35 out of 2,400 employees were chosen for the first wave training effort. Helped identify and start process improvement on a $650,000 problem in reduction of electric motor sound levels; immediately started prior to beginning a career in teaching in 2005.

• Manage / Lead (1989-2005) – Laboratory and in-house project management activities for prototype testing and development for a $35 million manufacturing plant producing 22 through 46 frame sub-fractional, fractional, and integral horsepower brush-type DC motors and gearmotors. Personnel supervision has varied from a department of 3 individuals to over 100 people in multiple departments. Also instrumental in development (in 2003) and approval of ISO 9001:2000 certification (obtained in June 2004) for final UL audit. This

included developing timeline, heading up project team (as interim Quality Manager), writing procedure supplements, constructing work instructions, and training all plant employees.

• Sole Product Engineering Support Person – Facilitate changes and product support as required for the 120,000 square foot manufacturing plant. Responsible for new product launches and archiving of data; utilizing AutoCAD LT 2000 for drawing manipulation for test equipment. Responsible for the plant-level authorization of the design concepts & prototyping efforts of three prototype technicians.

• UL / CSA / CE Representative – Submit / obtain / maintain UL / CSA / CE agency approvals / management of project files.

• Customer / Vendor Liaison – As required, customer and vendor support was rendered; including conducting numerous plant overviews for visiting dignitaries.

• Technical Resource Person – Whenever QA / Engineering / Customer design issues surface; I investigated and handled the situation for our manufacturing plant.

Industrial Consulting Efforts

• Regal-Beloit Corporation; Lincoln, MO – Summer 2007 through Fall 2008 Facilitation: Six Sigma Project Facilitation / Training $ Value: Not determined Status: Completed Helped (2) six sigma green belts to understand the application of DMAIC six sigma principles in a manufacturing environment. Core tools shared (and used in the projects listed below) include Quality Function Deployment “House of Quality”, Cause & Effect Matrix, Process Mapping, Failure Mode & Effects Analysis, Gage Repeatability & Reproducibility analyses (manufacturing process and metrology equipment capability studies), control chart creation, data collection and analysis, statistical analyses, work instruction creation, and work associate training. Project One: Gearing Department Process Monitoring Software $ Value: Not determined Status: Completed The project consisted of assessing the current methods of recording gear cutting process control with a goal of process improvement. Many of the six sigma tools were used in this assessment. Once the process was assessed, it was determined that a computer needed to be set up for gear-hobbing operators to use; with statistical process control software. To avoid the purchase of expensive SPC software, I developed a software program that utilized Microsoft Excel. The software developments meet the requirements of the project. The project is complete and equipment costs (new widescreen monitor and flexible keyboard) were minimal. Project Two: Gearing Department Pull System $ Value: $29,080 Status: Completed

The emphasis of this project involves the creation of an inventory pull system for the gearing department. An optimum balance between inventory turns, heat treat costs, and part availability is needed in order to reduce lead time on gearmotors below 10 days. The project utilized all of the six sigma tools. Project Three: NEMA DC Magnetizing (for 3 assembly lines) $ Value: $26,000 Status: Completed The project consisted of evaluating the current capabilities of our present magnet-frame magnetizers in relation to gauss-induction variation, with its effects upon motor performance. Once determined, the goal is to define set gauss ranges through the use of a gauss-measuring fixture, in tandem with consolidating magnetizing efforts from three-to-one station. This will facilitate reduction in manpower and increase equipment utilization. I have designed and built the gauss-measuring fixture both mechanically (multi-faceted probe) and electrically (polarity and Hall Effect circuit) for this project. The gauss-measuring fixture has also demonstrated GR&R capability and is currently in use on RBC manufacturing lines. The project utilized all of the six sigma tools.
