Subsequently, Jejudo or Jeju-do can allude to either the island or the legislature authoritative unit. Prior to the year 2000, when the Seoul government changed the authority Romanization of han-geul, Jeju was spelled "Cheju". Every single composed reference to the island before 2000 utilization that spelling. Actually, the right articulation is "che-ju", however Koreans hearing a foreigner say "je-ju" will recognize the name. Jejudo was based on a legend.Brief History of JejuJeju was a free nation called Tamna until it turned into a protectorate of Silla in 662. In 938, after the fall of Silla, Tamna turned into a protectorate of Goryeo. In 1105 Tamna lost its self-sufficiency and turned into a region of Goryeo. It was King Euijong of Goryeo who changed the island's name from Tamna to Jeju. In 1271, Jeju turned into the base of the Sambyeolcho Rebellion against the Mongols. After Sambyeolcho was vanquished in 1273, Mongols put Jeju under direct manage, and it got to be Goryeo domain again in 1367. After the annihilation of the Japanese, Jeju turned into an authority some piece of the new Republic of Korea. In an occurrence known as the Cheju April 3rd Massacre, 20,000 Jeju Islanders were executed. The reason for this occasion is still debated. Jeju was then a piece of Jeolla until 1946, when it turned into a territory of its own. It ought to be noticed that the number of inhabitants in Jeju began an uprising against the Korean government between 1946 to 1948, and give or take 30,000 of the island's populace were slaughtered amid the uprising. The uprising started in an offer to pick up autonomy from terrain Korea, yet the Korean government in the long run figured out how to suppress the uprising. The thousand year history of TamnaTamna is Jeju's old name, signifying "island nation." The site contains the most punctual known and biggest private stays in Jeju, going back to the third century B.C. amid the proto-Three Kingdoms Period. Tamna additionally had strategic relations with the Dang Dynasty in China and Japan after Baekje was annihilated by a united power of Silla and Dang. Tamna was verifiably known as the free Kingdom of the Sea. It got to be subjected to the Goryeo Dynasty, and its name was changed to Jeju, signifying "a big province across the sea." TragedyIn 1948, Jeju suffered through the April 3rd Incident, which is regarded as the one of the worst tragedies in modern Korean history. Tens of thousands of lives were sacrificed and about 130 villages were destroyed. The April 3rd Incident was like a gale that swept across Jeju over a period of about seven years. Because of this, it is not unusual to find historical sites related to the April 3rd Incident everywhere on the island. Jeju has since become an island of tourism and world peace, but if you want to experience true peace, you should first know about the tragic time that Jeju endured. If you pass by without understanding that history, your tour will only be half complete.
