JEN President’s WelcomeWelcome to the 4th Annual Jazz Education Network Conference!

We are excited to host this year’s gathering in the beau-tiful and historic city of Atlanta. The community here has been so open and welcoming to our young organization and

we are pleased to be here to present a fantastic program consisting of 85 con-certs on 5 performance stages, featur-ing school groups of all ages as well as professional ensembles, 74 clinics in 6 clinic rooms, and two JENerations Jazz Festival performance/clinic ven-ues where 30+ ensembles will receive expert mentoring and adjudication im-mediately following their performance.

The theme of this conference is “Networking the Jazz Arts Communi-ty…from Local to Global.” This is your opportunity to connect with other educators, students, performers, and businesses to continue to build our network within the jazz arts commu-nity, and also beyond our community as we hope to develop new audiences of jazz enthusiasts in the future.

We will be honoring Rufus Reid and Dave Liebman as this year’s LeJENds of Jazz Education during the Gala Fundraiser on Friday eve-ning (ticket required).

We are excited this year to offer video recordings of selected concerts and clinics, thanks to an arrange-ment with The RUSH Stage. These

recordings will be available for purchase on a special website accessible during and after the conference. If you missed one event while you were attending another one, you can still view it later in the convenience of your hotel room or at home with the purchase of a JEN RUSH Stage subscription. Conference attendees receive a discount for this service. For details, see page 78 or visit the RUSH Stage booth #117.

To all attendees,

It is a great honor to be asked to speak at this confer-ence… I feel so personally connected to the JEN mission of bringing Jazz, America’s great art form, to audiences around the planet.

I feel today is a great time to be a musician, an ed-ucator, and a presenter of jazz… I know many people

reading this will think I’m out of my mind, after seeing the demise of re-cord retail stores, the rapid decline in record sales, the lack of exposure on radio and in print… but a changing environment is where we find oppor-tunity…I started as a drummer grow-ing up in the Bronx, NY, and had the opportunity to study with great per-cussionists, but it was while perform-ing in band situations that my love affair really blossomed.

When I was a senior in high school, I saw a poster in the band room that said, “The Newport Jazz Festival is looking to find the best young jazz musicians in the New York area. If in-terested call this number…” I did… I was selected to be the drummer in the Newport Youth Band under the direc-tion of producer George Wein, and educator/musicians Marshall Brown

and John La Porta. Members of this unique big band in-cluded Mike Abene, Eddie Gomez, Eddie Daniels, Ron-nie Cuber, Jimmy Owens, and many other wonderful young players. This led me on my life’s journey. From this early professional start, I attended Manhattan School of Music, and performed with many bands, and eventu-

ally was hired by pianist/conductor Dave Grusin to be the drummer for singing star Andy Williams. This experience went on for six years and was the greatest education I can ever imagine. Not only was I playing charts by the great-est arrangers, but also performing every night with an or-chestra conducted by my eventual partner, Dave Grusin.

Fast forward…. Dave and I started Grusin/Rosen Productions to produce records for major record labels. Then we started a record label: GRP Records. Our ros-ter included Chick Corea, Gary Burton, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, BB King, Diane Schuur, Dave Valentin, Lee Ritenour, John Patitucci, Dave Weckl, Billy Cobham, Ramsey Lewis, the New York Voices, Billy Taylor, the Yellowjackets, GRP All-Star Big Band, Diana Krall, and many more. Now after Producing and Executive Produc-ing over 350 jazz albums, I learned how to market and sell jazz to fans around the world.

I then followed this path to launch N2K, the first com-pany to launch music on the internet, I created the PBS TV series – Legends of Jazz with host Ramsey Lewis, cre-ated and produced the Jazz Roots Concert and Education series in performing arts centers across the nation, created and produced the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vo-cal Competition – the Sassy Awards, and utilized JEN in the adjudication process. I’m currently producing a 7-part multi-media project, with Quincy Jones and Phil Ramone, titled RECORDING: the History of Recorded Music.

Bottom line, Jazz has been my life’s experience… and trust me, now, in our changing environment, is the time to connect jazz with audiences around the planet.

INITIATIVES AND PROGRAMS

JENerosity ProjectThis year’s JENerosity Project re-cipient is the Atlanta Music Project (AMP), a 501(c)(3) non-profit, which provides intense music education for underserved youth right in the neigh-borhood of our 2013 convention. AMP currently runs three after-school youth orchestra sites in inner-city Atlanta, providing 110 students, free of charge, with over 300 hours of stellar music instruction and perfor-mance opportunities annually. Its mission is “to inspire social change by providing Atlanta’s underserved youth the oppor-tunity to learn and perform music in orchestras and choirs.”

Want to help? Donate gently used instruments or other music education resources, such as mouthpieces, jazz and con-

cert band music, music stands, uniforms and other things re-lated to a functioning instrumental music program. Monetary donations are also being accepted. Drop off all donations to the JENeral Store before the close of the convention.

Outreach ProgramSince the JEN Outreach program’s inception in 2010 at the In-augural Conference in St. Louis, JEN art ists and clinicians have reached more than 7,000 students and community members! At each conference, JEN partners with the local community to bring conference talent to new audiences. The JEN Outreach Committee, started by Mary Jo Papich, is working with Phil Clo re, Atlanta Outreach Coordinator, to reach the YMCA and the local Alzheimer’s Center to schedule conference musicians to perform at the various sites during the conference.

Additionally, for this conference, JEN has extended their Outreach program via live streaming. Partnering with Lehm-an College in the Bronx they brought live music to students in Atlanta Pub lic Schools and schools from around the world during their November 2012 Jonny Pacheco Latin Music and Jazz Festival via stream ing. Thanks to Allan Molnar, Stewart Smith and their ALIVE Project (Accessible Live Internet Video Education) initiative, the JEN Outreach project is helping promote live listening and developing new audiences. Molnar will be presenting a clinic on this at this year’s conference and is a charter member of JEN. Special thanks to the musicians participat ing live and the streaming and thanks to Allan Mol-nar, WRFG’s “Captain Mellow” Phil Clore, and APS Director of Fine Arts-Dr. Raymond Veon for making this happen! Ex-citing plans are underway to extend the Outreach program to a year round basis, stay tuned to JazzEdNet.org for updates.

Scholarship & Award WinnersJohn LaPorta Educator of the Year Award, sponsored by Berklee College of Music: Davey Yarborough, Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Artistic Director of the Washington Jazz Arts Institute, Washington, D.C. 2013 Conference Available for Online Streaming Through the RUSH StageMissed a clinic at the JEN conference? Want to see your favor-ite performances again? JEN is happy to announce a partner-ship with The RUSH Stage, LLC for the 2013 conference. Dur-ing the conference, various clinics and performances will be filmed and made available for streaming during and after the conference.

Conference attendees and non-attendees alike will be able to purchase a subscription to The RUSH Stage, enabling them to stream content from clinics or performances, and replay parts they find intriguing, or expe-rience sessions they weren’t able to attend due to conflicting concurrent time slots. Attendees will receive a special attendee promotional code allowing them to receive two months of on-line access to all recorded conference events for only $25. Non-conference attendees can purchase a two-month subscription providing the same access for only $75.

It enables performance groups and organizations to capture their live performances, tag all relevant information (in real time) regarding who did what/when, and upload that content to its streaming servers, where subscribers can access the content. Most importantly, The RUSH Stage clears all required performance and synchronization licenses prior to “revealing” this content to viewers on our site, so you can rest assured that JEN is respecting copyright law by making sure writers and pub-lishers are properly compensated for their creative work.
