IT’S TOUGH TO TALK ABOUT THE SOUL. Like most holy things, you can’t touch it, you can’t see it, you can’t even easily describe it.

As a result, we spend most of our best energy and time talking about everything but the soul – our jobs, our family, the balance in our bank account, the recruiting class for next year. Since we cannot see the soul, we focus on what can be seen. It’s easier to fix the visible than wrestle with the spiritual. Even if we are not doing well, we can put on a good show. There is no bruise that cannot be covered by makeup, no hurt that can’t be conveniently hidden away.

But the constant declaration of scripture is that we are more than the sum of what can be seen. And at some point, there is a reckoning for all those inner struggles that we avoid. The soul will have its say. As the writer Dallas Willard put it, “You are an unceasing spiritual being with an eternal destiny in God’s great universe Memorize it. Say it to your friends. Tell it to people you meet. Strong currents in our society will attempt to keep you from realizing who you are before God.”

Beneath all your roles and responsibilities, beyond all the other voices in the world trying to tell you who you are, you are a soul. Failure to tend your soul is to forget who you are. John Ortberg points out that the only person in the universe who is in charge of keeping your soul is you. No one else can do that for you.

Lent is a journey to reclaim the soul. It is not meant to be a religious diet where you give up extra calories for the glory of God, nor is it meant to be forty days of guilt leading up to Easter. Lent is an admission that we are the kind of creatures prone to give up our souls for the sake of the world, and the only cure is Christ. In these forty days, we are not just memorializing what Jesus did for us, we are not merely recount-ing the story of salvation in calendar form – in a profound spiritual way, we walk alongside Christ as he makes his way to Golgotha. Like the disciples before us, we face temptation and betrayal and the urge to run the other way. But somewhere deep down, we know that the way of the cross is the only way to authentic life.

In Lent, we attempt to let go of all that steals life, for the sake of the only One who can save our lives. For Lent to be what it is meant to be, it cannot be a rehearsal of reli-gious routines, it must be a lived-out experience of discipleship.

So my prayer for all of us in this season is that we would remember who we are: an unceasing spiritual being with an eternal destiny. Remind yourself of that truth every day as we move towards Jerusalem.

See you Sunday on the way to the cross.

Opportunities to Serve & Give

Handmade clay clutch crosses have been given out for this Lenten season. During the winter months, numerous Trinity ser-vants have been diligently making these beautiful crosses – each one unique in color and shape. Have you picked yours up? They are available in the church office. Left hand crosses are also available.

The crosses are packaged with a special bookmark. There is a daily Bible selection listed on the bookmark that follows our Lenten theme, SOUL KEEPING. Join to-gether with our church family as we pray, read the scriptures and tend our souls for the 40 days of Lent.
