Efficient and Effective OHP Presentation Skills

The overhead projector, being an episcope, is designed to operate in any normally lit or slightly darkened room. Once set up, it requires no further attention other than switching it on and off. The following guidelines on operation and control, if followed, should help to make your presentation interesting and effective:

Pre-plan and produce your transparencies well before starting a presentation. This will allow you time to plan and design your message/visuals for more effective communication. §Set the projector up and focus it before the class assembles. Avoid fiddling with the projector unnecessarily during the course of your presentation.

§Correct vertical ‘keystoning’ by repositioning or tilting the screen to face the projected light beam as close to a 90° angle as possible. You can also move the projector to bring the two (i.e. projector and screen surface) into a perpendicular relationship. Many portable screens have keystone eliminators to enable you to do the adjustment.

§Switch on the projector only when it is required. Leave the OHP light on if you intend to show a series of visuals in quick succession. Switch it off whenever there is a long interval between transparency changes. This prevents glare. It also ensures that the class is not left expecting the next transparency soon. The same effect is obtained by taping a card on the top head of the projection lens assembly. Flip the card down to cover the lens during a change of transparency or when you pause to give examples to clarify your points.

Efficient and Effective OHP Presentation Skills

§Summarise information into an outline format of ‘key points’ using short phrases/words.

§Use large lettering sizes to ensure visibility (e.g. 18 points or larger). However, to ensure good legibility you should apply the 8H and 1/25 Rule. The farthest comfortable reading distance of a visual is approximately 8 times the height of the projected image. The smallest letter should be at least 1/25 the height of the image.

§Choose lettering styles that are simple and legible from a distance. Words written with the capital script are more difficult to read than those with lower case (e.g. FACULTY CLUB vs. Faculty Club). A combination of both is best.

§Reveal information on transparencies one statement after another gradually rather than project a mass of information all at once. Transparencies photocopied off a page of text contain too much information. They cannot be easily read on the screen, especially when the lettering size is small.

Time the exposure of your transparency to allow slow students to read it. Read the information silently yourself, at least twice, before changing to the next transparency.

Avoid unnecessary movements and gestures which may distract attention away from the projected information. Face the class and maintain eye contact with students during your presentation.

Remember to stand at the side rather than directly in front of the projector to avoid blocking the students’ view.

Some Common Techniques of Producing Transparencies

HandmadeFelt inks are ideal for transparencies. Water-soluble inks are temporary and can be removed with a damp cloth, and they can be messy; in contrast, alcohol or methyl spirit-based inks are ‘permanent’. For error correction, use methyl spirit to remove ‘permanent’ markings. Use a medium-point pen if you are preparing transparencies for large-group viewing and other tip shapes and sizes for special applications. Cap all overhead projection pens in between use to prevent them from drying up. Crayons and chinagraph pencils are not recommended because of their poor line definition and stickiness on the transparency. Ordinary inks and paint are opaque and will not rest well on the smooth non-absorbent acetate sheets. or fibre-tip pens containing either water or spirit-based transparent

HandmadeBlack, red, blue, green, orange, purple, brown and yellow pens can be purchased. But yellow or other light-coloured inks on a clear transparency are the most difficult to read from a distance because of the lack of contrast and the glare of the white background. Sheets of coloured adhesive film, which have contact adhesive on one side to bond the film to the acetate base, can be used to colour large areas of any illustration on the transparency. Alternatively, you may consider using the Omnicrom process to colour your transparencies.Write-on acetate sheets are the cheapest to buy but they cannot be used for photocopy or thermal reproduction. However, there is now a dual-purpose acetate which can be photocopied and written on. Coloured acetates are also available and the blue-tinted type helps to reduce glare, especially for transparencies which have few visuals or lettering.

Computer-generatedWith the proliferation of personal computers and printers on campus, attractive OHP transparencies can be easily made for teaching and presentations. With the use of software packages like Freehand, Word, PageMaker, and WordPerfect, you can wordprocess, design and produce transparencies directly or print hard copies to serve as masters for imaging onto transparencies with a photocopier or thermal transparency maker. Computers linked to colour printers, film recorders and full-colour photocopiers will enable you to produce colour transparencies like original colour photographs, pictures or paintings. These full-colour transparencies are applicable in teaching situations where the projection of accurate colour rendition is critical to understanding the message or teaching content.

Photocopied (PPC)

PPC transparency sheets are more expensive than write-on acetates because they have been pre-sensitised to electrostatic charge and heat. The powdered (toner) images fused by heat/light on the PPC transparencies will rub off if not stored carefully. Protect the image side by taping a sheet of paper on one side of the mounted transparency. The PPC technique is particularly suitable for reproducing suitable visuals from a book. Apart from writing on an acetate sheet, another quick way of making a very acceptable transparency is to type on a sheet of white A4 paper, enlarge it to an appropriate size and then photocopy it onto a clear or coloured PPC transparency. Most photocopiers are equipped with enlargement and reduction facilities.
