@#$%!

Should comedians refrain from using certain words that deeply offend many women, African Americans and members of the gay community? Is satirizing Mohammed off-limits because it offends many Muslims? Is there any context at all

in which highly objectionable language and images may be used? Who gets to decide? Joe Raiola will explore the most controversial free speech issues of the day. With humor and insight, he sheds light on the cultural debates over freedom of speech, Supreme Court decisions, political correctness and more.

Leonard BernsteinAmerica’s Maestro

Friday, August 17th at 2:00 PM

Leonard Bernstein was an American

bookmaker’s son, he was known as much for his hell-raising as for acting. His film career spanned over forty years. He made many excellent films such as Becket and The Lion in Winter, and many awful ones, but he never gave a dull performance. O’Toole had the most Academy Award nominations (8) with no wins. He was given an Honorary Oscar in 2003 for lifetime achievement, which he accepted with gracious wit and his ever-present charm.

composer, conductor, author, lecturer and pianist. He had a long relationship with the New York Philharmonic, beginning with a celebrated last minute debut in 1943, lasting the rest of his life. He conducted most of the world’s orchestras and opera companies. He composed classic musicals like West Side Story, Candide, Wonderful Town and On the Town, and a range of compositions which included three symphonies and many chamber/solo works. This talk will celebrate the centennial of Bernstein’s birth.

Ladybird Johnson, Patricia Nixon, Betty Ford, Rosalynn Carter and Nancy Reagan

with Marilyn CarminioWednesday, July 25th at 2:00 PM

The Constitution does not outline responsibilities for the First Lady of the United States. This challenging role is sometimes described as the most demanding volunteer job in America. These remarkable women are wives, mothers and confidants to the most powerful person in the world, and occupy their own place on the international stage. Although not elected, they are often subject to intense public scrutiny. This multimedia lecture will highlight the personal side of life in the White House and the unique contributions each of these women have made to the nation.

That’s Entertainment

Broadway Overtureswith Richard Knox

Friday, July 27th at 2:00 PMThe idea of using a symphonic introduction for a musical theater production began centuries ago. Composers of grand opera began their works with a collection of musical motifs that allowed audiences to become acquainted with the melodies that followed once the curtain was raised. This musical “foreshadowing” became a key ingredient in productions such as Showboat, Oklahoma!, Guys and Dolls, My Fair Lady, and Gypsy. The act of weaving one song into another within a narrow time frame is an art unto itself. Be prepared for a wonderful experience reliving a host of melodies that have become an essential part of American music during this program.
