Volume 17 No 36 Kokoda BBQSouthcare Open Day
Meeting 785 - 27 & 30 Mar 14
Welcome:
This week saw two major events for the Club. The Kokoda Foundation Careers
night BBQ and Southcare Open Day and then there was also Juniors on Watch.
The two BBQ's are very different as the Kokoda is a fast paced, feed 370 people
in a 30 minute window affair and the Southcare Open Day is a full day event that
has peaks and troughs throughout the day.
They say a picture tells a thousand words, so please enjoy the photos.
Now we did have another major event, the Teacher vs Rotarians Bowls night. What a bunch of
woozes. A little rain and the teachers were a no show, which by default, I believe, makes the
Rotarians the victors!!! Where's the trophy Mrs Hunter??? Mmmmm?????
Jerraganda business:
From the Desk of the President:
Last Thursdays meeting was a quiet one with the weather preventing the
Bowls challenge from taking place and a BBQ crew on duty at the KokodaCareers Night. I understand from reports, that the Kokoda night went very well
and those who attended the Bowls Club enjoyed a nice meal and fellowship.
On Friday Sue and I attended the Jerrabomberra Public School term 1 Assembly
and presented the Literacy Angels Award and the Juniors on Watch Award. It was a lovely
assembly as usual, and very well led by Peg as our very own Chris Hunter was away on School
Camp with the year 6 children, apparently building an Ark in the swimming pool as the rain
prevented many of the other outdoor activities. The entertainment by the students, a key feature
of the school assemblies, was very good especially from our ring side seats. Photos were taken,
and hopefully the Editor may be able to source them in time for the newsletter publication.
The Term 1 Literacy Award was presented to Chloe Bremner of 5 0, for giving 100% effort at all
times and making a great improvement in literacy.

The Term 1 Juniors on Watch Award, recognising honesty, safety and respect to the school and the
community, was presented to Hayley Ricks of 2 H, who had very honestly handed in some money
she found in the playground.
Both girls received certificates and goodies.
Two very worthy recipients and two very nice photos Mr and Mrs Rogers
Sunday saw a huge turnout from our members in support of the South Care Base Day. This is
always a big day for the club in terms of manpower requirements and once again we excelled as a
great team, producing good value, tasty food. I have sent out a personal thank you to all, and I am
sure there will be a separate report and photos from others, but as President I feel very proud of
the effort everyone puts in on these occasions, and want to thank you all again for a job well done.
This coming Thursday we are away again, on the much anticipated Queanbeyan Mystery Tour.
Make sure you check your emails for timings and starting point, and make sure you have paid and
completed your Disclaimer Form.

JokerBIG PEOPLE WORDS
A group of kindergartners were trying very hard to become accustomed to the first
grade. The biggest hurdle they faced was that the teacher insisted on NO baby talk!
You need to use 'Big People' words,' she was always reminding them.
She asked John what he had done over the weekend. 'I went to visit my Nana'. No,
you went to visit your GRANDMOTHER. Use 'Big People' words!'
She then asked Mitchell what he had done.
'I took a ride on a choo-choo'. She said. 'No, you took a ride on a TRAIN. You must remember to
use 'Big People' words'.
She then asked little Alex what he had done. 'I read a book' he replied.
That's WONDERFUL!' the teacher said.' What book did you read?'
Alex thought real hard about it, then puffed out his chest with great pride, and said,
'Winnie the SHIT'

SGT Fines:
Remember, when next we meet, it will be a cross fines session only, the SGT
will not be fining anyone, so get your thinking caps on and see how many fines
you can generate.
Heads and Tails:
Attendance:
I think that between the two BBQ's over the last week, and juniors on watch, we
had at least 200% attendance and there should without a doubt be Port and
Baileys all round!!

Farmers Market Corner:
From the Pen ofChris Hunters
Markets were very busy on Saturday. David Bailey was early - Chris was on time and Chilly was
(surprise!) late - but only a little bit....
Drawstring purse found and handed in with $50 in it. Got a hug from the lady when she came to
see if it was handed in. Wasn't her money as she was buying for an 85 year-old. She wasdelighted.
Reunited a man with his Frequent Flyer card - he was also pleased.
Same silly drivers parking in the No Stopping zone. Bought it to their attention.
But a lovely morning, good company, great coffee - apples in season, figs looked good, met an old
school friend - yes, OLD as we went to high school in Molong together - that's 48 years ago!
Thankyou, Mrs Hunter, good report albeit a little vague on the money!

OUR HISTORY
In 1998 the Rotary Clubs of Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan West Rotary decided to sponsor a new Rotary Club
based in Jerrabomberra. Bill Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of
mentor (Peter Jarvis went on to become our Charter President).
Advertising for potential members began in March 1998. After a successful campaign, the Club was chartered on
18 November 1998 with 20 members. We are an unusual club as we have a very high proportion of female Members.
Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Store
the venue was very good until we grew innumbers. We then moved to the Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years. We now meet at the
Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for 6.30 pm). As at 26 Jan 2014 the Club has 26 members
11 female and 15 male. Included in this are seven married couples. We also have 4 supporters of the Rotary Club.
(Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club bulletin and a design for the
Club banner. There were some good and (very) bad suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the winning bulletin name;
Jerraganda. The banner design by David Stevens was eventually selected. The design incorporates a goose and the
windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate.
Here cometh April again, and as far
as I can see the world hath more
fools in it than ever.
