    Volume 17 No 48 Disbursement Meeting Meeting 797 19 Jun 14

    Welcome:

Pres Paul welcomed everyone to meeting 797 and invited Lizzy to recite theCharge to Australia and Ian Wholohan to give the toast to Rotary

International and to Rotary Clubs everywhere.

At the last Club meeting for 2013-2014, Pres Paul advised that he is happy to

hand over the reins, referring to the night as his last night of power. Tonight

is disbursement night, and will consist of introducing guests, giving away

money, a small amount of business, no fine sessions tonight, so the Pres is

happy that he can go home with some money in his pocket.

Be warned Rotarians, the SGT has her last fine session at the Changeover Dinner and has a VERY

long memory. Bring plenty of change!

Pres Paul again welcomed our friend Vera, and asked visiting Rotarians to introduce themselves.

PDG Paul Street, Rotary Club of Canberra.

Mary Gays and Athol Reid, Rotary Club of Kingston in Tasmania,

Paul welcomed our guests, Anton's wife Rosemary, Rebecca Whitehouse from the Bendigo Bank,

and also welcomed back Marie Claire to her second meeting.

Pres Paul initially invited our guests to introduce themselves, however as only Pres Paul can do,

    took over the intros:

Glenn Jarvis, son of Peter and Sue - Glenn runs the Qbn recovery group and will also be

    representing Home in Qbn.

David Smith, Qbn Mens Shed. David used to be a member of the Club but moved on for health

reasons and has since found his calling.

Jack Sealy, chairman of QBN legacy. Legacy is currently supporting 140 war widows.

Christine Hooper is representing the Jerrabomberra Pram Walking Group officially known as the

Qbn Post Natal Depression Community Advisory Group.

Bill Taylor from the Jerrabomberra Vet is representing the Indigenous Dog Health Project.

Cathy and Colin Hobbs are representing Alison from Snowy Hydro who unfortunately was

    unavoidably detained!

Thankyou to Anton for the camera work and Pres Paul for the Captions.

together who want to do things for others. Every Rotarian contributes in their own

way either individually or as a group. Pride is what they all feel. Our club

contributes to the bigger picture and tonight we are able to disburse our proceeds

    to worthy causes.

Caption Competition - please send captions to the Editor - a prize at changeover for best caption.

Jack Sealy advised that they are looking after 140 legacy widows. They have a village which

has been in existence since 1965 and is fully occupied. Our donation will assist with the

purchase of air conditioners, bus trips etc.

Jack gratefully accepts the Check for Legacy.

Christine Hooper advised that they are very grateful to be recipients of our generosity. TheGroup walks every Mon at the same spot and this will help to pay for their personal trainer.

Bill Taylor advised that this was an organisation set up by himself and his wife. Utopia is a

remote community in the northern territory where they travel to desex dogs and provide

treatment against fleas. Bill also advised that they are holding an Art auction on 02 Aug at

the Arboretum for anyone who is interested.

Bill thanked the Club and managed to get in a plug for their Art auction!

Martin Fisk from MensLink was unable to attend, however Chilly, their the newest

counsellor advised that the organisation helps young guys between the age of 14 and 18 get

to choose their own role model. It costs between $300$400 for a mentor.

Men's Link's newest Mentordo they call him Robert????

PDG Paul Street advised that Rotary is attempting to rid the world of Polio and have

narrowed the fight down to Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan. PDG Paul advised that we still

have a long way to go. He asked that Rotarians look to their own generosity and think about

giving personal donations. All money is matched by Bill Gates x 2 so our donation will equal

    $3000.00.

School of St Jude started with 3 students and now have over 1800 students, full primarycampus, snr campus and boarding campus. The school relies fully on donations. Our

donation has sponsored a teacher for a year which costs $660.00, in Arusha, Tanzania. The

Club went there in 2010 and contributed to projects that they dont usually get to do it.

Gemma started with a $10.00 donation from the Rotary club of Armidale and at the end of

this year they will have the first year 12 students. They can only take one sibling from each

    family.

Glenn was also representing the Home in Qbn. This is a great home that looks after people

and allows them to live there relatively independently. There are 20 people living there with

debilitating mental illness and they have a home they can live in and feel safe.

Glenn gratefully accepts the Clubs Cheque and thanks the Club again!!

    OUR HISTORY

In 1998 the Rotary Clubs of Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan West Rotary decided to sponsor a new Rotary Club

based in Jerrabomberra. Bill Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of

mentor (Peter Jarvis went on to become our Charter President).

Advertising for potential members began in March 1998. After a successful campaign, the Club was chartered on

18 November 1998 with 20 members. We are an unusual club as we have a very high proportion of female Members.

Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Storethe venue was very good until we grew in

numbers. We then moved to the Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years. We now meet at theJerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for 6.30 pm). As at 26 Jan 2014 the Club has 26 members

11 female and 15 male. Included in this are seven married couples. We also have 4 supporters of the Rotary Club.

(Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club bulletin and a design for the

    Club banner. There were some good and (very) bad suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the winning bulletin name;

Jerraganda. The banner design by David Stevens was eventually selected. The design incorporates a goose and the

windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate.

    Only the mediocre are

    always at their best.
