Welcome to the
Jersey Battle of Flowers 2012On behalf of the Jersey Battle of Flowers Association I would like to extend a warm welcome to you as we celebrate 110 years to the day since the first Battle was held in this arena.
Over the next two days you are invited to view two of the most spectacular Parades you are likely to see anywhere in Europe, put together by the community for the enjoyment of both islanders and visitors alike.
Many of you may not be aware that in mid December a Battle Christmas Parade is held and it is straight after this festive event that the planning and construction begins in preparation for these Summer Battle Parades. Over the last few days hundreds of volunteers have been frantically sticking fresh flowers on today’s numerous exhibits, working incredibly hard to complete their floats on time. During the Grand Day Parade floats are judged in various classes, and a great friendly rivalry exists as entrants ‘battle’ for the days Major Awards.
Friday night is party time as exhibitors celebrate along-side the bands and spectators. Hundreds of lights are fixed to the floats ready to take to the arena in the electrifying Moonlight Parade, concluding with a grand fireworks finale. Will your parade favourite be the same as the judges?
As you will appreciate an event of this magnitude does not happen without hundreds of volunteers working unceasingly. The help received from exhibitors, judges, stewards, parade officials, the States Police, honorary police, St John’s Ambulance, Transport and Technical Services, crowd and seating marshals continues to be fundamental to the seamless running of both Parades.
Of course my thanks must also go to the Parishes of St Lawrence and St Helier in which Battle is held, with further thanks to St Helier for the use of People’s Park for the funfair and Lower Park for the seating area.

For the fourth successive year the Battle has linked with a local charity,
and I am delighted to say our nominated charity for 2012 is the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (Jersey Branch). The RNLI does sterling work looking after our safety at sea, and for a second year are providing lifeguards for our beaches.
The Jersey Battle of Flowers is an annual community event which never ceases to amaze judges and spectators alike with its diverse and stunning exhibits, and this year’s parade will be no different. I hope you fully enjoy the following parades and that the sun is shining once again on Battle Day. I welcome your return next year and look forward to congratulating this year’s Parade winners.

IntroducingMiss Jersey Battle of Flowers 2012
Miss Jersey Battle of Flowers, 19 year old Rebecca (Becky) Houzé is a vivacious and fun loving girl, whose long term intention is to be a farmer.
Currently studying agriculture at Harper Adams University College in Shropshire, she spends much of her time with animals, walking beagles, fishing and even ferreting! along with tending the cattle.
Becky has been bought up on her family farm which is now in its 3rd generation of farming and when in the Island she helps look after their 45 calves.
As an ex Beaulieu Convent School girl Rebecca, sees the role of Miss Battle as being an Ambassador for the Island and is keen to do her best in putting Jersey on the map.

Matthew hails from West Yorkshire. A former gymnast, he represented Great Britain at junior level until injury prevented him continuing and he turned to acting. Other television credits include Jason in Hollyoaks and Timmy Pain in Courtroom (Mersey Television).
Theatre includes Chips and Rock and Roll (Royal Exchange, Manchester), Tomfoolery (National Tour),
Aladdin (The Old Vic) directed by Sean Matthias, Protean in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Royal National Theatre) directed by Edward Hall, Joey in Saturday Night Fever (National Tour) and Romeo and Juliet (Piccadilly Theatre). Matthew has appeared on, amongst others, All Star Mr and Mrs, All Star Family Fortunes (ITV) and Soapstar Superstar (Granada Television).

Not only is the Battle of Flowers Grand Day Parade one of Jersey’s premier tourist attractions it is also a major community project where everyone gives their time freely to complete this amazing carnival.
This is followed by the spectacular Battle of Flowers Moonlight Parade the following evening, which is an amazing evening parade of flower covered floats that incorporate thousands of illuminated lights to give a truly magical appearance and a fitting finale to the Battle of Flowers floral extravaganza.

Look back atBattle through the YearsJersey’s world famous
Battle of Flowers has a very patriotic origin.
In 1902 to celebrate the Coronation of King Edward Vll and Queen Alexandra, Jersey decided to hold a parade. The event was so successful that it was decided to repeat it the following year and a tradition was established. In the early days the floats were mostly horse-drawn and covered in floral decorations. The tradition was to tear a flower off the float and throw it to a lady in the crowd. Flowers were sometimes thrown back and hence ‘Battle’ was born.
The Parade was abandoned during World War 1 but revived in 1926. During World War ll and the Occupation of the Channel Islands the Parade was again suspended. At the start of the 1950’s a group of businessmen decided that a revival of Battle was long overdue as a focus for the community and an additional benefit for the emerging tourism industry.
The event has gone from strength to strength and in 1964 it was decided to drop the ‘Battle’ aspect of the Parade.
Competition is fierce, the larger fully floral floats of up to 45ft compete for the major award Prix d’Honneur. Islanders of all ages work unceasingly in the weeks leading up to Battle in warehouses and sheds all over the Island, patiently working with dried flowers and harestails (lagurus grass) makingintricate patterns and designs.
The night before Battle the Island is ‘abuzz’ with many helpers working all night sticking the many thousands of fresh flowers on to their floats. The fresh flowers are predominately chrysanthemums which have been shipped in from the United Kingdom and Holland and asters which have been grown locally.
Not only is Battle one of Jersey’s premier tourist attractions it is also a major community project where everyone gives their time freely to complete the amazing spectacle. The Battle is enhanced by the many Bands, both locally and from overseas who join in the Parade. The day is over all too soon so sit back and enjoy, and Friday night you can watch the Spectacular Moonlight Parade.

Although the Battle of Flowers has a history of over one hundred years, the Moonlight Parade is a more recent event which started in 1990.
From it’s modest beginning with some of the smaller floats adding lights and taking to the arena on the same day as the Grand Day Parade it became so popular that the larger floats and visiting bands joined in. The event was moved to the Friday night in order to give the exhibitors more time to prepare and hence the Moonlight Parade was born.
Floats now have very sophisticated lighting systems and the event now rivals many world renowned illuminated carnivals.
Although competition for Best Illuminated Float is fierce the atmosphere is very relaxed and a wonderful carnival atmosphere soon gets both exhibitors and spectators into the party mode.
The climax of the event is the traditional Firework Display.

The Moonlight Parade takes place on Friday 10th August where all the exhibits can be seen illuminated and animated against the night sky. The atmosphere at this event is ‘electric’. The carnival spirit comes alive and it’s “Party Time!”.

Fantasia Travelling Theme Park, recognised as leading funfair organisers in the UK will once again be bringing many funfair rides to Jersey. The funfair will be located on People’s Park in St Helier, close to the Battle of Flowers Parade arena from Friday 27th July to Sunday 12th August inclusive.

The Jersey Rockettes Cheerleading Squad was set up five years ago and we now have five squad groups! You may have seen the Jersey Rockettes perform before in the Battle of Flowers or the Spring Spectacular and even at the Million Pound Lottery! We offer many performance opportunities for the cheerleaders as well as performances in our annual shows. Cheerleading classes are available from age 5 - 18. Our cheerleaders performing at this year’s Battle of Flowers are aged between 6 - 17. The Jersey Rockettes are a registered squad with the British Cheerleading Association and we are associated with the National Council for Spirit Safety and Education. The Band of the Island of Jersey was originally formed in 1876 under the name of La Societe de L’Avenir which later became L’Union Musicale. Sometime after the Second World War the Band was renamed to its present title “The Band of the Island of Jersey”. The Band differs from traditional brass bands in that not only does it entertain locally concert wise, it’s also is a marching Band with full Corps of Drums, which makes The Band of the Island Jersey Britain’s most southerly marching brass band. The Band, conducted by Musical Director Nick Manning MBE, has appeared in numerous prestige events not only in The Jersey Battle of Flowers but also in England, France and Germany, including the Birmingham International Tattoo in 1995 and 1997 and again in 2006, a trip to Bad Wurzach in Germany 2008 and the annual Mardi Gras Festival in Granville France. Last month they performed in Iserlohn in Germany in front of 150,000 people for a Shutzenfest. Jersey’s Band has always been performing at The Jersey Battle of Flowers since the early 1950’s of which is always a fantastic carnival atmosphere and enjoyed by all.
Run for Cover are a very popular local Band and this will be our 14th Battle of Flowers appearance. The band has been going for 21 years. We still play at least 80 plus gigs a year. We play at the Dolphin Hotel, The Farmers Inn, The Star, Kitty O’Shea’s, The Tivoli Tavern – we play at all these venues on a regular basis, plus gigs for the Jersey Hospice Care and many Fetes and any other events during the year.

The Sea Cadet Corps is a nationwide voluntary uniformed youth organisation. We have a rank structure modelled on that of the Royal Navy, giving Cadets an opportunity to progress and take up positions of responsibility as they acquire skills and seniority. The remit of the Sea Cadets is to provide fun, friendship, adventure and learning new skills based on waterborne and land based activities. TS Jersey is an RYA Recognised Training Centre and also offer cadets the BTEC Award and the Duke of Edinburgh Award. We also have a Marine Cadet Detachment. The Dolphin Marching Band is now in its 16th year and was formed in 1996 by the present bandmaster Mr. Chris Godber. In the band’s life it has enjoyed taking part in many carnivals, fetes and fairs all over the country. The band also have performed on many occasions such as Remembrance Parades at the Weymouth Festival of Remembrance and civic receptions, also Disney World Florida five times, and visited Jersey, performing in the famous Battle of Flowers carnival on several occasions this being the band’s favourite summer camp. The band has always prided it’s self in raising it’s own funds and supporting itself, the members do work hard, but in return they pay nothing, all cost in the way of subs, uniform, instruments, etc are met. The band is returning to Jersey this year as their summer camp. Most recently the band has undergone a huge upheaval and the challenge is now to regroup and rebuild and to keep the spirit of the Dolphin Marching Band alive, anyone wishing any further information please look at our web site www.dolphinmarchingband.org.uk

The Herne Bay Sea Cadet Band was reformed 15 years ago after a break of 30 years. Herne Bay SCC has been National Sea Cadet Band competition winners in its short time. The cadets work very hard to achieve this standard and are often called upon to form part of the National SCC Band. In the last 16 years the cadets have performed at various events including four royal functions, Lord Mayors Show, International Festival of the Sea, Queens Jubilee celebrations. Portsmouth Navy Days, Veterans Day and has lead many parades, including Herne Bay Carnival and Remembrance Parade for the last 14 years. The band took part in the warm up at Deal for HMRMs “Marines on the Green” this was in front of a crowd of 12000. NONE of the cadets actually read music it is ALL done by repetitive learning unlike all military bands that have music cards. This is the second year we have taken part in the Battle Parade.
Samba Burros founded in 1999, are a regular feature at Guernsey’s Liberation Celebrations, Late Night Shopping and many other charity and sporting events during the year. Their name “Samba Burros” came into being in 2005 as “burros” is the Spanish for donkey, the well-known description for Guernsey people who are reputedly strong-willed, stubborn and proud to call themselves donkeys. The band regularly invites visiting players to run workshops and are constantly adding to their repertoire. In 2005 the band participated in the Welsh Encontro in Cardiff and since then members have also gained experience in encontros in Swansea, Hitchin, Guildford and Manchester and Luton. Auto-Matik is a robot created by Nigel Phillips who lives in Devon. Last year he attended 20 carnivals between August and December, winning 1st prize at all, including Bridgwater Carnival. The costume took 5 months to make and being on stilts the robot stands 8 feet tall with moving parts and is lit using hundreds of LEDs. Nigel is a Gardener by trade, but has been involved in carnival as a hobby for over 30 years with
carnival clubs around Devon and Somerset performing on floats. He also makes fibre-glass models, used for the illuminated night time carnivals. Amongst his model creations are giraffes, zebras, lions, dragons, cows and pigs which put in an appearance most years on a variety of carnival entries.
The Rainforest Bladers & Forest Fauns ’Performers’ are delighted to be invited back for the Battle of Flowers & Moonlight Parades. With their beautiful & eye catching costumes they will be entertaining the crowds along Victoria Avenue with their “cheeky smiles & mischievous ways”.

The Chesterfield Musketeers Showband were formed in 1981 following the disbandment of the Chesterfield Toppers Carnival Band. They have appeared before HRH the Queen Mother, HRH The Prince of Wales, and HRH Princess Royal, together with over 400 delegates at the 30th Commonwealth Conference on the Isle of Man, other appearances overseas have included The Millennium Carnival and Milk Cup Festival in Northern Ireland, twice participating in one of the World’s largest Illuminated Carnivals in the Bridgwater ‘Guy Fawkes’ Carnival (Somerset) and this year are proud to be representing Chesterfield for the seventh time in the prestigious 2012 ‘Battle of Flowers’ here in Jersey. The ‘Chesterfield Musketeers’ main uniform takes its inspiration from the 1994 epic film ‘The Three Musketeers’ and the second costume from the Alexandra Dumas’s novel of the legendary heroes depicted in many feature length movies over the years. A book written by the band manager ‘All for One and One for All’ published in full colour follows the band over their first 25 years through a grant from the National Lottery ‘Awards 4 All’ in 2007. With a full programme of activities planned throughout 2012 across the UK the band are always looking to take up new challenges. Instruments featured in the line-up include Trumpets, Baritone, Tenor and Alto Saxophones, Euphoniums and a vibrant percussion section.

The Marching Band of the 948 Squadron Air Training Corps This is our second year taking part in the Battle. Our band is based in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. Established in the 1970s when the Squadron was based at RAF Brawdy. This years Band is made up of 948 squadron cadets and No.3 Welsh Wing Band (boys and girls aged between 13 and 18yrs). Led by a Drum Major who leads the Band using a ceremonial mace to give non-verbal orders. He ensures the Band remains in step, knows when to stop and turn. The instruments we play are Bell lyres, Cymbals, side and base Drums. We took part in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in Milford Haven and in a static performance at Haverfordwest Riverside Festival. Our Band attends variety of events: Remembrance Sunday at St Davids, Anzac Day in Milford Haven, British Army days at Brawdy, Civic receptions and festivals. Last year we joined forces to form a Welsh Wing band, marching at the ATC 70th Anniversary in Swansea. We have
previously taken part in the London and Liverpool Lord Mayors Parades. Jersey Battle of Flowers is unique in our calendar and it is such an honour to be invited back to take part once again. Thank you Jersey!
13th Coventry Scout Band 2012 will be the fifth time in which the 13th Coventry Scout Band has taken part in the Battle celebrations. Although the band is extremely well travelled, they still regard this as one of the highlights of their marching season and eagerly look forward, each time, to returning to their favourite island. In today’s Battle and the pending Moonlight Parade they will be teaming up with their close friends and colleagues of the Jersey Scout Band combining to present us with a massed band. The Coventry band have an impressive pedigree having performed over 35 times for royalty at many of their country’s iconic venues as well as having a back catalogue of first class regional and national competition results. Their distinctive style of playing popular music has won them many friends and supporters around the world.

The Jersey Scout Band is the only marching Youth Band in Jersey. They are 42 years old & are made up of members of the local Scout Association. Among their achievements are playing at Disneyland Paris in 2005 & 2007, regular trips across the water to play in France, more recently at the ‘Fete des Fleurs’ held in La Haye Pesnel, Normandy. The Senior Drum Corps played at the Queen’s Scout Parade at Windsor Castle in 2011. Local outings include Liberation Day, St Helier Pilgrimage, Remembrance Sunday, Government House & numerous other events. We have been friends with the 13th Coventry Scout Band since 1979 & are proud to join with them yet again for the Battle of Flowers.
Batala Portsmouth is part of Grupo Batala, a global drumming family that now has 25 bands in 15 countries and has over 800 members worldwide . It was founded in Paris 15 years ago by Giba Goncalves, who composes our music and maintains the high standard of performance by visiting bands regularly. Batala play authentic Bahian style Samba-Reggae which, unlike Rio style groups, has no percussion instruments and uses only drums creating a dynamic, hypnotic and energetic sound. The drums, costumes, and equipment for all of the bands are made in Salvador de Bahia, under a fair trade agreement. Our band is over 30 strong and we are based at Portsmouth (although our members come from various places in the south) and we regularly play at local events including Portsmouth dockyard, Southampton sports relief, Portsmouth football club matches and at regional and national events like the Great South Run, Bournemouth University Summer Ball, Folkestone Chiarivari carnival , Devizes carnival and to over 1 million people at Notting Hill carnival. Batala Portsmouth has just celebrated its 10th Anniversary by hosting an encontro, bringing together other Batala bands culminating in an amazing fusion of dancing and Bahian Samba-Reggae.

Jersey School of Performing Arts Afternoon and Evening Parade-Dance Troupe-”Magical Movement on Parade” The Jersey School of Performing Arts School, has been resident at Caldwell Hall, St. Clement, since it began nearly ten years ago. The school teaches people age 2 to 20 years, all forms of dance, drama, singing and guitar. The Principal, Jersey born, Lucy Riseborough, set up the school after a professional career in the UK as an actor, musical theatre performer and teacher. Lucy has entered the Battle of Flowers Parade as a child, dancing with different floats and over the last ten years has entered dance troupes, such as, “Cabaret Team”, “Aliens” and “Black and Red” www.jerseyperformingarts.co.uk

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has been a part of life on Jersey since 1884 when the charity first placed a lifeboat at St Helier. It was the beginning of a long association that continues today. In 1969 the St Catherine’s lifeboat station opened and last year the RNLI took over the lifeguard service on the island.
Our volunteer crews are on call 24/7 and last year on Jersey they launched 67 times and assisted 98 people. This totals 1,437 volunteer hours at sea on rescues with more hours being spent on the water on exercises. It’s an extraordinary commitment that the RNLI is extremely proud of.
We need your support to continue our work, to train and equip our volunteer lifeboat crews and our lifeguards. In return we promise to use every penny you give us to save lives at sea safety, effectively and as cost-efficiently as possible.
