For those who dont know me, my name is Bob Siefert, Im the Director of Jersey Shore HOG, a dealer sponsored motorcycle club. I grew up in Carteret NJ in an era of muscle cars and Harley choppers. I first got into Harleys at the age 17 years old. My first Harley was a 1963 Flat head 45 cubic inch Harley chopper with an 8 over springer front end, hard tail frame, 3 speed suicide shiſt, peanut sportster tank, no front fender, straight pipes (no mufflers or baffles) and of course no front brake, just a drum brake on the rear wheel. Spring 2017 Edition A lile bit more informaon on suicide clutch set-up: The terms "suicide clutch" (or "jockey shiſter") refer to a motorcycle foot- operated clutch and hand-shiſter to change gears found on early designs from around the turn of the 20th Century to the 1940s or 50s. You must remove one hand from the bars to change gears, or cannot put both feet on the ground while using a foot clutch to disengage the transmission. It was referred to as a "suicide clutch" because stopping the motorcycle in-gear required the rider to keep his foot on the pedal. Should you lose your balance and put the leſt foot down, the motor- cycle could lurch forward into cross traffic see example below.

A little bit more information on suicide

clutch set-up:

The terms "suicide clutch" (or "jockey shifter") refer to a motorcycle foot-operated clutch and hand-shifter to change gears found on early designs from around the turn of the 20th Century to the 1940s or 50s. You must remove one hand from the bars to change gears, or cannot put both feet on the ground while using a foot clutch to disengage the transmission. It was referred to as a "suicide clutch" because stopping the motorcycle in-gear required the rider to keep his foot on the pedal. Should you lose your balance and put the left foot down, the motor-cycle could lurch forward into cross traffic see example below.

Okay...here we go

TIPS ON HOW TO BE A GREAT JSHOG PHOTOGRAPHER

1) TELL A STORY…(Who, What, When, Where, How)...Take photos of people on the ride (group photo??) Take photos of what was the ride representing. Take pho-tos that show what time of year was it or what specific date. Take photos of the places visited (signs, etc.) Take photos of the various bikes on the ride.

2) SELECTIVE EDITING... Before submitting your photos, edit out the bad ones...if all the photos submitted are the good ones then no one sees the bad ones and you will appear to be a great photographer. No one has to know about the lousy shots!!

3) GET YOUR PHOTOS POSTED ON THE WEBSITE....Get them out there so every-one can enjoy them.....If they just sit in your camera or on your phone, are they any good to anyone???

From the Directors Chair (continued from page 1)

Remember back in the day Harley didn’t have the massive ‘big book’ they have today, you had to go with aftermarket

parts. I remember B&D Harley on Route 1 in Rahway was the place to get your straight pipes, also called drag pipes.

They always had a huge display of every type of pipe hanging from the ceiling. My favorites were goose neck drag

pipes, the type that had a little curve at the end of the pipe.

Two other shops on Route 1 in Rahway where I always got parts were Deals and Wheels and Cycle Incorporated.

Deals And Wheels was run by Leo. The first time I met Leo was in Rahway in his garage, where he was guy to go to if

you needed a spoke wheel trued. He was so successful in that small operation that he opened a shop on Route 1

north by the White Castle. Whenever you drove down Route 1 you would always see that large mural. That was the

place to get all of your aftermarket parts, lights, seats, chrome …. he always had a great chrome exchange or he

would send your parts to Newark for chrome plating.

Then there was Cycle Incorporated on Route 1 South by the junk yards, run by Stroker Joe. They had a full machine

shop, and that was the place to get a magneto or engine work, during a time when S&S and Andrews were Kings in

performance parts, they still are. He is still in business on Route 537 in Cream Ridge NJ, right down the road from the

Jackson WAWA where we stage our rides.

These were the 3 shops in my area where I would get my parts to keep my 21 horsepower bike running.

It was a lot of fun back then—but I truly enjoy Harley Davidson of today, and I wouldn’t want to ride one of my old

bikes from yesteryear, that’s just me. To each his own.

A Days Ride In South Jersey by Paul Ciribassi

This is a nice 111 mile ride starting off on Rt. 539 in Plumstead Township. Mostly less traveled roads through southern Jersey around Fort Dix military base. Then head south through the small towns of Southampton, Tabernacle and down along the Mullica River. Enjoy the views along winding creeks and majestic cranberry bogs.

You will pass some of New Jersey boating history, mari-nas and boat manufacturers of bygone days alongside modern yards that are building some of the most mod-ern boats on the market today. Along the way you will

find many places to stop and eat, such as the Oyster Creek Inn located in Leeds Point and just up the street is the charming Smithville Inn with multiple restaurants to chose from. Travel north about ten minutes and there is Alan’s Clam Bar on Route 9 in Tuckerton. If anyone would like the GPS routes for their bike please email me and I will send it to you.

My email is: [email protected]

To many of us, our motorcycles are treasured members of the Family, part of our personal DNA. We carry with us the joy and

memories of each riding season. So a visit to HD’s birthplace is always a special occasion.

Part of my frequent trips to Wisconsin is an annual stop by the Harley Davidson Museum in Milwaukee. It offers an opportunity

to step back in time and take in the progression of our motorcycles. It also underscores the importance HD plays in the on going

development from inception to present day advances in motor cycling.

Last months’ visit was special. H.O.G. admission is now included with our annual membership fee. Besides a fancy H.O.G. mem-

bers admission receipt, a H.O.G. silver dollar size 2017 Museum collectable pin is also offered to members. HD is serious about

admission; besides a current H.O.G. membership card, a photo ID is also required for proof of identity. If not provided, full price

admission is charged.

The attention to detail is amazing. From arrival the visitor is fully immersed in HD history of motorcycle development. The origi-

nal (serial #1) HD pedal motor bike is “enshrined” in a glass case featured in a specially designed room, basically declaring HD /

Milwaukee the birth of the American motorcycle. Moving thru several floors of presentations every HD motorcycle design ever

built, along with detailed “interactive” motor displays is featured. Also highlighted is a detailed history of board racing, along

with every gas tank color combination offered over the years. Included in the main hall is a historical riding clothing Exhibit. The

list goes on, and for sure will take several hours to explore the museum in detail.

Everyone takes something special away from a visit. For me it’s always about the paint jobs and headlamps. Since the mid

1920’s thru 1950’s the “freight train” size headlamps seem to play an important part in the front end character of each model.

My favorite is the 1936 green and cream addition. It carries a look forward into the modern day Road King Classic.

Also the H.D. Museum store offers a wide assortment of items from collectibles to vintage clothing designs and unique tee shirts

fitting all price ranges.

For sure, should you find yourself within striking distance of Milwaukee this coming season, consider taking some time to discov-

er the heritage of our rides!

SAVE THOSE ALUMINUM CAN TABS

Those pesky tabs are worth something !!!

We at JSHOG are collecting those tabs for the

These are the people that sponsor our bike raffle each year.

There is a bin at Shoreline Harley- Davidson to drop them off.

(FYI...I have already emptied the bin once)

Please collect them wherever you can and drop them off. Put a can in your office or any other place of work for donations.

We will deliver all tabs to the House when we go next year to get the bike raffle ticket drawn.
