The Jester Warbler MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Parade and Activities Saturday, July 4 - 9:30 am Paint your wagons, decorate your bikes, your pets, and yourself, and join in this festive parade! Gather at Jester Club at 9:30 am (you don’t need to be a member of the club to participate). Parade route will be up Jester, around Basil, and back. Games and activities to follow! The President’s Corner The feral hog problems in the neighborhood have eased off with the rains the last couple of months. But we still have a group working with the city, trying to make sure they address this issue. The good news is the city is planning to hire a staff person to focus full time on this problem. You should call 3-1-1 and report every time there is hog damage to your property. This is very important. It seems that break-ins and thefts have increased in the neighborhood with the bad economy. It helps Jester get more police attention if all incidents are reported. Call 9-1-1 to report life-threatening incidents – crimes that are in progress and all serious or violent crimes. You can now call 3-1-1 to report incidents and situations that are non- emergencies, not life-threatening or not currently in progress. Use 3-1-1 to request information from the Police Department. We will finish up our work on the median at the Jester Blvd./ RM2222 entrance with some rock work. Then we will review our plans for improvements to the west side signage at that entrance and get that project moving. Do not expect it to be completed until this winter because we have missed the window for planting now that summer weather is upon us. Until next time – Philip Kolman Nature Watch by Jim and Lynne Weber CAVERNS AND CAVES Millions of years ago, the great seas that stood over Texas deposited the makings of thick layers of limestone. As the land rose and the seas fell, eons of rainfall leached out hollows, deep pits, and underground streambeds, and over time, these deeply hidden worlds built a silent beauty. Today, Texas is riddled with over three thousand known caves and sinkholes, most of them in the Edwards Plateau region of central Texas. The most important factor in cave formation is the presence of carbon dioxide in water, the main source of which is found in the soil. Rains form a weak carbonic acid that drives the progressive process of dissolution, a process that is more common in limestone than in any other type of rock. Fractures in the limestone allow this weak acidic water to fill voids in the rock, and as the water flow eventually decreases and the water table recedes, caves may become dry or partially dry. Some of the carbon dioxide that was in the water is released into the cave atmosphere, causing the water to become less acidic, and the calcium carbonate dissolved in it begins to form tiny crystals or precipitate. Individual crystals build (Continued on Page 3)
