When preparing any document, please obey the following typographic principles:

The organization name – Jesuit Conference – is never to be abbrevi-ated as JC. When typesetting the organization name in body text, the “J” in “Jesuit” and the “C” in“Conference” are capital letters withthe remaining letters lower case.

Do not underline text. Instead, use italics or boldface type for emphasis.Keep in mind that italicized and boldface copy is significantly more effective when used sparingly.

Set all type flush left, ragged right.

Do not center any text.

Do not right justify any text.

Avoid the use of indentations. Use bullets sparingly. When bullets areneeded, select those that are roundand filled in.

Try to “hang” your bullets as shown.Hanging bullets create an even, flush-left text line that enhances legibility.

Always leave one full line space between paragraphs.

Identity Elements Typography 1.10

Set all type in upper and lower case. Avoidthe use of all upper case letters. A typeface losesreadability when used as all capital letters.

For most applications, type is reproduced in black, Jesuit WarmGray, or white.

Province BulletinNovember 4, 2009

From The Provincial

This past September I expressed our gratitude to those Jesuits and lay colleagues who accepted an invitation to helppromote vocations to the Society, for without Jesuits we will be unable to carry out the mission which the Lord hasentrusted to the Society for the Church. However, I also want to take this as an opportunity to remind all of us, bothas individuals and as communities, that we are all vocation promoters. A new study on recent religious vocations by CARA at Georgetown University showed that “good intentions, sophisticated marketing campaigns and the investment of resources into vocation promotion alone will not attract new members. It is the example of membersand the community life, prayer, and/or ministries of the institute that most attract new members…” This research reinforces some of the practices we already utilize in our vocation efforts. While there are established vocation promotion committees in Milwaukee, Minneapolis/Saint Paul, Omaha and South Dakota, their efforts take place inthe context of establishing a culture of vocations in the province. I have asked the vocation promotion committees to make a priority of prayer for vocations. I make the same request of you, as well. Let us all try to keep this priorityin our hearts and minds during this coming year.

Reconfiguration

On Sunday, August 30, Fr. Timothy P. Kesicki, S.J., already Provincial of Detroit, was installed as the new Provincial of Chicago, replacing Fr. Edward W. Schmidt. The ceremony took place in the chapel of St. Ignatius High School inChicago. Besides the Wisconsin scholastics from Loyola University being present, the Wisconsin Province office was represented by Dutch Dutkiewicz, Pat Burns and Luis Rodriguez. Three Jesuits, one from each Province, offeredsome reflections during the ceremony and the Wisconsin Province was well represented by Joe Simmons, S.J.On September 2 Fr. Charles Kelley, S.J. of the Jesuit Conference offered a day-long presentation to the WisconsinProvince Office staff on the reconfiguration project: background, present status and projected developments.

Province News – Updates

Tom Neitzke, S.J. will be ordained a deacon on October 16 at St. Ignatius’ Church on the campus of the University of San Francisco, CA.

P.J. Shelton, S.J., Marquette High Latin and theology teacher, is a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction. Shelton was given the award in May by the National Society of High School Scholars for being a role model and for his outstanding dedication and commitment to excellence in the classroom. PJ was nominated for this prestigious honor by one of his students.

Provincial’s Corner

Brothers,Many thanks to the communities and partners in ministry who have hosted provincial visita-tions over the past month. My first visit was to Jesuit House in Denver, along with RegisUniversity and Arrupe Jesuit High School. In St. Louis I visited Leo Brown, Loyola Academy,Sacred Heart, and White House. A few days ago Kevin Dyer and Joe Laramie welcomed me to the new School of Theology and Ministry at Boston College. Kevin will be ordained tothe diaconate in Boston on Saturday, October 10, a reason for all of us to give great thanksto God.

While visiting Denver I dipped into Harry Stansell’s book, Regis: On the Crest of the West. The story begins with five Neapolitan Jesuits who arrived in Santa Fe in 1867. They beganas preachers and pastors but soon became publishers, too, buying a printing press and editing the weekly Revista Católica. Wanting to do even more, they decided to open aschool in Las Vegas, New Mexico. When Father General warned the superior not to proceed rashly, they postponed the opening … for about six months! Operating on the cultural frontier between established New Mexicans and immigrants from the East, they opted toteach in both Spanish and English. The school operated at something of a religious frontier,as well, and parents were assured that, “although the College be conducted on strictlyCatholic principles, no undue influence will be used to make a pupil depart from his religiousbelief.” Latin was offered as an elective at no extra charge, but, as the catalogue noted,“owing to the special requirements of this Territory, the course of studies is mainly commercial.”After relocating a time or two within the New Mexico – Colorado Mission, Las Vegas Collegefinally settled down in Denver and became Regis.

It seems to me that the Neapolitan Jesuits passed on to us not only their school but alsotheir spirit, a spirit now expressed in the work of Regis University, Regis Jesuit High School, and Arrupe Jesuit High School. The spirit that led the Neapolitans to buy a printing press led us to pioneer online education. The spirit that led them to adapt the curriculum to “the requirements of the territory” led us to adapt the curriculum to the needs of adult learners. The spirit that led them to open their school to all sorts of students led us to offer Jesuit education to girls at Regis High School and to economically disadvantaged students at Arrupe. The spirit that gave them the flexibility to accept payment in the form of “oves etboves et pecora campi” has led us to some creative financing, as well. Today we continue to serve in Colorado with the same creativity and courage as our predecessors, and withhearts as big as theirs.
